Hi folks, welcome to another instalment of "Collectors Thoughts on a Sofa". In this episode I'm going to be discussing whether the GI Joe Classified Leaks spoil the Yo Joe June fan stream experience?
On Tuesday 4th June the highly anticipated Hasbro Pulse fan stream for Yo Joe June took place. BUT, just a mere day ahead of the event most all of the reveals we got had been leaked through distributors, retailers, and marketing partner content creators. I think it had an impact on the fan stream experience, and has effected the overall Wow factor for Yo Joe June this year. I'll offer up some thoughts and reflections on the leaks, and I invite you to share your own in the comments down below.

Yeah I was hoping to see a figure or two that we had no idea were coming out like what happened with the Desert Snake eye figure which was a total surprise to everyone. That was an amazing experience to have since it made me feel like a little boy opening my wrapped gift on Christmas morning.

Exactly. A few little tactical leaks to get the juices flowing is one thing, but its another to essentially see everything altogether. Desert Snake Eyes is a great example of how "event" marketing can benefit from a cheeky little bit of wow factor.

I'm primarily a transformers collector, I'm used to it. we get factory theft weeks if not months in advance, it is very rare for us to be surprised. we have just started to see the mcdonalds transformer that won't hit till september.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I've seen this very thing prove to be a bit of an issue in the Trading Card Game world too in my time as well. It's clearly not a uniquely Yo Joe June problem. Being used to it is one thing, but I still think its a shame.

I don’t worry about leaks. Normally the leaks are terrible photos that everyone freaks out about. I just wait for the stream. It’s not a Hasbro issue.

Fair. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You're absolutely right - I could very well just not look and be patient, although it was pretty hard to avoid even if you're vaguely virtually active in the Joe socials. LOL

It definitely left me feeling deflated about it. I did hope for a bit more so we were surprised. And on top of that there wasn’t many figures I’ll even be picking up. But all is good. There’ll be many more.

You're absolutely right - this is just some reflections of snap shot in time and there will be plenty more GI Joe Classified excitement as the convention season rolls on. :)

I think the leak spoiled it. Last year was so exciting week by week watching the streams getting a little bit more what's coming up they blew their wad on the first stream so it went from Yo Joe June to Yo Joe week. I thought I heard something about a secret reveal for this Tuesday and we haven't seen anything on once was a man Cobra Commander or Nemesis enforcer

The spoilers spoilt it. You couldn't avoid it either, it was on countless thumbnail pics of people I'm subbed to. At least we've seen that the dragonfly and figures look great!

100% It's the "event" aspect of it all. Seeing a piccie of a pre-order in advance is one thing, but getting spoilers for an event is another. There was such a buzz last year that I don't feel this year. I get that its resource intensive, and that their hand is forced by the distributor/retailer leaks, but it has taken some of the magic out of it.

The leaks didn't bother me at all for the simple reason, we knew all these figures were coming for ages. All the Retro's we knew were coming, and the Stinger was an obvious repaint of the Vamp. The IG BAT was also a pretty sure bet seeing Hasbro roll out a new BAT to go with every type of trooper. If anything, I was expecting way more name and render only reveals of new figures!

Yeah - I suppose - but even knowing I wanted the "wow" factor of seeing them for the first time on the stream. Interesting point on the names & renders though - we DID see a lot less of them than I would have imagined too. That certainly would have helped inflate the experience a bit for sure.

@@MoDXtraGC My guess is they are saving the render and name only reveals for SDCC, seeing they are headlining it. That way they can announced the Rattler, the SDCC exclusive, the Dragonfly support pack set and then some regular retail figures.

Leaks were right before the Fanstream. It was a heads up but the main show was the stream. I was a little excited to see the IG troopers were the design I loved, and I liked v2 Storm Shadow. Immediately afterward came all the RU-vid reactions and comments with people complaining about everything... that ruins the experience. We also have reveals for figures coming for the next 6-9 months now. We've been spoiled in the last year or so with the drops.

I definitely saw packaging shots and the white background renders on the Monday - I think the promo photography is what dropped on the Tuesday closer to the main event. The complaining... I'm hoping my own reaction video doesn't fall in that category 😬🙈 I think you make a fair point about expectations - last year did set a stall out that was going to be difficult to follow this year for sure - and maybe there needs to be a bit of an expectations levelling out needed.

There might be a saving Grace Chris - if you look at the promo shots of the Iron Grenadier - you will see the photo where he is hitting another character in the face with his helmet - the figure he is hitting hasn’t yet been announced- it’s meant to be a Gold helmet Night Force Steel Brigade figure

For me, the leaked list of items from a distributor spoiled things a little bit. So far this Yo Joe June has been underwhelming. If nothing new or unexpected comes out the next few weeks, then I will definitely feel like the leaks helped contribute to spoil the experience compared to last year. Sometimes I have the opportunity to see a new movie a few days early or even a week or 2 early. I don’t discuss the movie so as to not ruin the experience for others that plan to see the movie out of basic courtesy. I feel like the distributors should use the same discretion since they already know what is being offered for preorder.

I suspect the distributors/retailers do have an information embargo to encourage the discretion you talk about, but it was ignored. It's problematic because the world of content creators thrives & survives off scoops - its drives views - and makes it exponentially bigger. This is clearly something I understand as a YTuber myself. Actively choosing not to build content on the leaks was definitely a decision that challenged my FOMO for those sweet, sweet views LOL

Good evening first of all. Something else really got me excited about Classified's last release presentations. In the Pulse live stream, the Iron B.A.T. was announced as being available for pre-order on June 4th on Pulse, along with Alpine, Grenadier and Storm Shadow. The last three were there, but the B.A.T. wasn't. I visited the Pulse site several times a day for a week and nothing. When I then sent an email to support on the evening of June 11th (with a screenshot of the announcement for June 4th), I got a reply on the night of June 12th that they had no idea where it was. When I then went to the site at 9 a.m. on June 12th, the B.A.T. was suddenly there - and already sold out. That's a disgrace. I complained to support about this, and also about the fact that the Joe Line in Europe is only available exclusively through Puls and not through other retailers here. For the Classified Line, Pulse has now become a kind of scalper's heaven. Thanks Hasbro.

The good news is.. IG BAT is NOT a pulse exclusive. He is a mainline release and will be in stores all over....assuming those are accessible to you.

Sucks friend. I heard about the IG BAT shennanigans - I'm assuming you are in the UK or mainland Europe because that's where I heard it happened. A lot of folks were frustrated with its absence AND the speedy sell-out situation. I skipped the IG BAT so it didn't effect me, but I get how annoying it is. I generally use independent retailers over here for my stuff, and that tends to be a little better. You have my empathy.

@@MoDXtraGC Thanks a lot for this insight, I hadn't noticed that at all. In general, I don't understand Hasbro's distribution strategy at all. What is a pegwarmer in the USA can be a rare collector's item here in Europe and vice versa. As if Hasbro has never heard of market analysis.

I'm absolutely in agreement. The leaks do ruin the experience of the event. The worst part is that the leaks are EVERYWHERE and unavoidable. If it was just a couple places being like come see the leaks if you want to, that would be a different story, but when 3/4 of the community floods ever social media outlet with the leaks and the become unavoidable, then they're just ruining the event for the sake of taking the fun out of it. I would have been more hyped having gone in not knowing what figures we were going to see at all and then getting a look at those actual figures rather than knowing everything and just wanting to see the phsyical figures. The sad part is these days there's really no viable way to avoid leaks because WAY too many people feel the need to share them.

I think you're right - it is possibly just the way of things now and accepting it is better course and find other ways to better enjoy the streams.

Lengthy ramble coming up... It's a tricky balance. I have no problem with name leaks, I think it actually adds to the excitement of collecting, you're not sure if they are correct & even if they are there's still the anticipation of seeing the final items. Plus it also helps plan what I want to buy - I don't need to pay over the odds for a figure I missed if I know there's a new version coming. But the day or two before pictures lately do go too far and rob the fanstreams of a lot of their impact, which is a shame because the streams themselves are entertaining enough (with the possible exception of SW) to watch even if all the information is online shortly after. It also didn't help that this latest wave wasn't quite the knock-out the previous Jinx wave was, with mixed opinions on all 4 figures. On a related note YoJoe! June feels underwhelming this year compared to previous as an event, the focus this time seems to be on SDCC. The Dragonfly unboxing was good but I'm hoping they have something in reserve for the last week, maybe the 2x 60th figures.

Sounds like we're like minded on this. Dissecting retailer listing and speculating what something might look like is fun - like you say "there's still the anticipation of seeing the final items". BUT we agree on the wind getting taken out of the sails with visual wow factor of the stream itself being less fun. I've observed the focus on SDCC - well... the general wider convention season as a whole - too. I get that, but I like the fan streams because everybody gets in on it (being virtual). I also observed the absence of the 60th Ann. figs with interest, and have heard others speculating that, despite saying "this is it" for Yo Joe June on the fan stream, we'll get a wee little surprise at the end of the month. Fingers crossed, but they may also be getting held back for SDCC, or 1027, or Pulsecon, or NYCC... LOL

The leaking DOES bother me as well. This time, the figures in the boxes looked terrible. The new packaging doesn't help sell anything. I feel like the POOR leaks really put bad tastes in ppls mouths. So then when they come the fan stream, they are already complaining. I think Hasbro should do the leaking, but instead, make them teasers. ZOOM in on a logo, a gun. a glove. a sword, a hat... etc.. Just take 1 little image and post it. Then LET THE GUESSING begin. I think it would bring more ppl to the Fan Stream. SSv2, we did NOT know about until the leaks. He was the big spoiler. Oh and the bitter fans for not getting hooded coco. I do think too much is getting leaked. We are already 1/2 way thru 2024 and we know like 7 figures in 2025. That's too much. People will pass on this stuff and wait for future items. That's good for the shopper, but bad for Hasbro. The dragonfly unboxing has some great teasers & possible oops. Lenny had the instructions and said JET.. oops... Rattler. BMAC, accessory team like the 788.. (Golden Steel Corp Commander in IG images), BMAC - Parachutes.. speculated to come with the 60th Pilot Halo Jumper figure. Lenny said Grand Slam when looking at Glenda's gun... Is he working on Grand Slam (oops?) Grand Slam came with the HAL and vamp at one point.. Maybe Grand Slam & HAL area part of the Dragonfly defense team? (REACHING there). I'd rather see teasers.. then let the content creators and discord go banana's.. drive UP the hype...

Thanks Flaffel. I like what you're suggesting there - kind of like what Mezco and Mondo do with the little teaser shots they post. That would certainly be better than the full packaging shot 2 days in advance. I "watched" the Dragonfly unboxing - and by that I mean I had it on in the background while I wrote a report for work! LOL I clearly failed to tune into what was being said!
