It stopped at some point, the last confirmed case of Kuru (the disease from eating human flesh) was in 2009. Its a prion disease, so it stops with your death... But that would've meant that person ate another human as recently as 1949 to 1999. The fact there were hundreds of confirmed cases and deaths every year in the 60s, definitely means it was a more widespread thing than the PNG PM cares to admit.

I get that PNG is sensitive about it - but every country has to deal with their own dark secrets and painful truths. The fact that it didn’t largely disappear until it was outlawed in the 1950’s, and continued to persist into the 1960’s - even til this day in some remote tribe(s) - is just the truth.

PNG highland tribes practiced ritual cannibalism up until 1970s or 80s. Eating the brains of defeated enemies led to a condition called Kuru, that was similar to Kreutzfelt-Jacob (mad cow) disease. They believed the science and gave up eating brains. Sporadic tribal conflict persists.

Actually ritual cannibalism was still practised in the New Guinea highlands during World War 2. Due to the rugged terrain many tribes had little or no contact with the outside world & were even unaware of the war unless it crashed into their vicinity. However in the lowlands the New Guinians were beloved of the Aussie troops for their help in saving so many lives hence the nickname "Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels".

Yeah you don't get Kuru without being a cannibal. Guess who had a epidemic of Kuru until the late 60s. The Fuzzy-Wuzzy name predates the war (the Brits gave the nickname to people in Sudan in the 19th century because of their hair). The Papuans who helped got the 'Fuzzy-Wuzzy Angel' moniker because they made repeated trips back and forth ferrying supplies and wounded. For some reason they didn't like the fact that the Japanese were indiscriminately slaughtering their people, but it should be noted that initially Australia pressed them into service.

Aware of Kuru & will again point out the geographic isolation - not defending the practice. Went on an anthropological expedition in the mid 70's. Also aware of the colonialist exploitation of indigenous people in PNG, forced labour etc. Know about Sudan. Hard to have a nuanced discussion in this forum.

@@titichartay7216 I'm a child of Empires :P Also met Michael Crouch IRL several times, whose father was the British attache to the Sudan in the 40s-50s. So I know plenty about the Sudan. He'd go on to be the British attache to a lot of the middle east during decolonisation (survived a RPG being fired into his living room). AFAIK in the 40s/50s/60s/70s the practise would've been pretty much limited to the Fore people. But for the PNG PM to say it didn't happen at all, reveals that he knows virtually nothing about PNG. Why would he? Practically all the political elite in PNG spent their teens/early 20s in Australia and have the Australian diplomas and degrees to prove it.

Tucker is indeed a very intelligent and charismatic person, and he uses it to tell lies and conspiracy theories to build a base similar to Alex Jones and Trump cult membership. He was just on Joe Rogan's podcast making up insane lies and denouncing really basic science, all things he knows very much are facts, but plays to the character of the market he is targeting. He is a lot like MTG, but actually intelligent. Nothing like Boebert, who is literally a trailer trash dumbfk. I think I can affirm. My dad was stationed in New Guinea and told us it still practiced cannibalism. In fact, the GIs were told to lay on back, with arm around necks with their handguns under their pillows in case the cannibals came in slot their throats and then cannibalize them. In his photo albums, one was dedicated to shrunken heads the cannibals had eaten. So it is not too far fetched that an island with cannibals would eat Americans.

As usual, as long as money excuses crime, the laws will always be written exclusively for the poor. A wealthy guy belligerently ignores court orders multiple times, and simply gets a “Hey! I said don’t do that! Give me what’s equivalent to 20 bucks again!” A poor guy is a few minutes late to his court hearing and somehow ends up in jail be default.

Cannibalism wasn’t outlawed in PNG until the 1950’s. It’s technically possible. Sorry that this is a sore spot for PNG, but cannibalism didn’t largely end until sometime in the 1960’s. If his uncle’s body was never recovered, it’s a very real possibility. Some tribes did eat bodies that dropped. Sadly, there is still a remote tribe in PNG that does still practice ritual cannibalism.
