That 1885-CC looked cameo to me. But the 1916-D is obviously a fake, in my opinion.

I agree, a few of those Morgans looked like they should have came back PL.

How to tell a real coin. 1. See if it grabs a magnet 2. See if it’s the proper weight. 3. Compare it to a common of the same series. 4. Put under a microscope to check mintmark. Do a ring test.

Measure the dimensions of the coin with calipers. I have seen Chinese fakes of the correct weight and look, but a millimeter too big or small. Yep, ping test with phone app to assist one’s ears. Finally, hope. Even the experts get fooled once.

Fun to see the results! That peace dollar was in a ICG 67 holder. I was hoping for a 66+. The obverse does look 67 but reverse 65+ The 86 Morgan was hoping for a 65 but that Trueview should look pretty awesome so oh well. The Buffalo nickel was in a NGC 66 Cac holder It’ll probably sit in the safe for a few years then go to NGC Thanks again guys!

The dreaded body bag. Thankfully it's been a while since I had a coin come back that way. Too bad that 1880 Morgan didn't come back prooflike. I think it deserves it

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I doubt that I have any numismatic prizes in my stash. Maybe a pre1900 double eagle.

Who in their right mind would think that 16-D looked right? There's no way...

Compared to the authentic D mintmark the "applied" D looks downright comical. I hope the owner can get a refund.

The Peace dollar was one of the best I have seen in a while. The 16-D dime was obvious fake. I pulled one from circulation in the late 1950's, low grade, also my Uncle had in his dime bank a 42/41, that was 1959. The grading must have been a day after the Angels won. I had two friends that worked at PCGs, that was the standing joke Angel win, grades go up. I didn't see any outrageous errors there. But at the shows I would see them all the time.

I got one of those, a 1913 gold indian , was counterfeit but real gold in an old collection holder. Pretty sure the original owner had no idea. And the auctioneer refunded me along with the PCGS fee. Pretty up right auction.

To your point of dealers selling raw coins and inflating the grade quality. Theres a dealer who’s a regular at my local shows, and he only sells raw. If you look closely at his table it doesn’t take long to figure out why. Basically all of his coins are polished or cleaned. A lot of them very badly, and he sells them as unc.

There are only 4 mint mark locations for 16D. 2 are RPMs. The D punch was the same as the 14D cent.

Thanks for sharing these submissions and your commentary. I wonder if the 1932-D quarter would stand a chance at a straight grade if you took advantage of PCGS's conservation service? I have seen some things make it through when submitted in that way, maybe worth at least an inquiry (though just speculative, as it was hard to clearly see on camera the extent of the surface issues it had). The 1916-D Merc was an abomination, and surely a case of, 'throwing good money after bad' as really, there was no way in hell that was ever going to slide through, most of us have seen far better fakes than that which were caught/denied! Keep after it guys, and thanks for the variety of topics.

Not good advice. If you immerse yourself in the knowledge of type, date, mint, and be willing to pass up anything that seems "off," you will be fine. Focus on your target is key. Also, there are fake slabs and slabbed coins out there, too. Nothing is guaranteed.

I would say stay away from raw coins for quite a while until you have advanced to at least the semi pro level in the hobby. Until then the only raws I would recommend buying are constitutional or low grade book fillers
