I love it that keeping Elvis alive and you weren’t even born when he was alive. That’s the effect Elvis had on people. A new generation is loving Elvis because of people like you. Thank you! He was amazing!
Elvis was a perfectionist and wanted to be sure he got everything right. Everyone need's a little help now and then. The man who put Aloha together was in a panic when he discovered the show was 10 minute's short. Elvis wasn't worried he filled in the 10 minute's and the show was a great success, Elvis was and alway's will be the best!!!!! The first live show ever and aired in 36 country's with million's watching, I don't think anyone else has ever done that?
Good job! I would have never noticed that! And I never would have thought that Elvis would be so nervous about forgetting words to any songs, but then again, with as many songs as he put out, I can see how it would be easy to forget a line somewhere here and there. Just goes to show what a perfectionist Elvis was!
I love all the small details and how you dig deep to broaden our love for Elvis. I appreciate that you're young and so knowledgeable about the greatest entertainer that ever lived. Elvis would be so proud of you. Thank you for your endless hours of research and sharing it with the world.
Ive seen him actually seen Elvis hold a song in his hand while singing to an audience nobody in the audience didnt care one way or the ither if he held the song or not all they cared about was actually being able to see an "icon" and that what he is/was !
It doesn't matter if he read the words or not. We are all human and nerves make us do crazy things. Even if he stood on stage...read every word..or just talk to the audience ....people loved him. He could do no wrong! People just wanted to see him.
Loved it when he improvised lyrics live or studio. There's never been such a human being under a microscope 🔬 as this man. A perfectionist at his profession he is surely missed now and forever.
Thanks for sharing this. I never knew he was opening his eyes to read the lyrics, I always thought he was doing that to steady himself. I love finding this sort of stuff out, Charlie was a good friend and his essential assistant on stage. Thanks again 👍
Yeah I think it’s a cool trick. He also help the lyric sheet for “I just can’t help believing” during ttwii, but didn’t want to hold it here. Not that he was holding the sheet at this time, although he did hold it in 76/77.
Elvis was a perfectionist and wanted to please his fans. I saw a rehearsal for Aloha where Elvis is arranging the song “It’s Over” with the backup singers. The last verses when he sings “walk the silent streets before me” he tells them to repeat the phrase “it’s over” after him, then he tells only the men to emphasize with him “realize our night” is over. I never noticed it before but when I watched the live version again I could see he looks back to make sure they repeat “it’s over” and also looks back to the guys to see them emphasize “realize our night”. It made me realize how much he cared about the performance. You can also see him look back on “what now my love” on the last dramatic verse “only my last goodbye” he looks back at someone, probably JD, as if to see if they approved of the note he hit. Ive seen that on other songs as well. Just makes him more lovable. Aloha was and is the biggest live world wide show ever and he killed it!
Elvis had thousands of songs running thru his head every day. He said in 1956 on an interview he knew every religious song there was. That was just the beginning of his life in the song business. I heard a lot of people in his mafia and others, such a Jerry Schilling say Elvis had a photographic memory. They said he could listen to a song 3 times and sing it from memory. He did this all day long. His song writers were amazed at this ability to memorize a song. But, I think, his stage fright over rode his confidence. But once he came on stage he was amazing. R.I.P ELVIS 👑💕
Wouldn't care if he put on glasses and used a hand held magnifying glass to read the words..who cares...this is Elvis! Of course he cared about being the best for his audience...and he always gave his best! Rest in paradise, dear Elvis.
7 days a week, 2 shows at night, rehearsal with the band, rehearsal with the choirs, how many concerts, how many cities, driving long distances to different venues. 20 gold record albums, hundreds and hundreds of songs. Visiting fiends, Visiting family. Spending time with his daughter. Sleep, what's that.? Rest what's that?......COME ON NOW!!!! And all this for his FANS....Elvis gave and gave and gave until he couldn't give no more. Thank You Elvis WE LOVE YOU!!
No problem, also very smart. He doesn't have to remember hundreds of songs. This does not spoil the perfection of Elvis. He is the king in everything. The best, the most loved and the unforgettable ❤
You have to remember that Elvis sang hundreds of songs, and I challenge anyone to be able to remember so many songs word perfect....like he kept trying to tell everyone he is just a man...only human.
At his concert in Rapid City he held the words to “My Way” and read them while he sang. That was in June, 1977. He said something to the effect that he needed help remembering the words. No one cared -they just wanted to hear him sing!! ❤️
He was an incredibly beautiful lean machine in Aloha. That peformance of "Just Can't Help Believing" is one of my all time favourites. Find the lyric sheet a the beginning, and the slight stumble over words mid-way, rather endearing. He could have sung a phone book and it would sound glorious.
I think Elvis could have sung all his songs reading from a song book and nobody would have cared. As for My Way...l think Elvis done the best ever version of it, he sang it with such passion. Thank you for another great post.
Elvis did close to eight hundred songs and that’s more then most other artists also Elvis was very nervous when he was on stage so I am sure that added to the pressure of maybe forgetting the words to songs. What was great about Elvis he let people share in his shortcomings just watch his last concert on tv that’s okay because Elvis is the king of music the one and only GOAT!
More like, Elvis took 800 Xanax, tramadol, diazepam and obetrol before he got on stage, and he ain’t nervous, he’s high as shit. In fact, he’s inebriated. But one thing I will say is that despite how blasted he was, his tone was never off pitch. Never.
@@lorimeyers3839 get your shit straight!!...Elvis was not on drugs during Aloha...and your saying he's enebriated?? - he didn't drink...so go somewhere else and spread your venom!
I've never noticed this out of the thousands and thousands of Elvis videos. To me it just reminds me that Elvis was just human like the rest of us. Great video.
Awesome Elvis !! He always wanted to get it right ! "Walk mile in his shoes " Lots of songs to remember ! " I would do it too !! Love always Elvis !! ⭐🎶❤🙏😎
Charlie was a decent man he was all for Elvis no deceit .. and think about it Elvis was very aware this was not just a normal concert this was all over the world he wanted to be taken seriously and as a mature entertainer he didn’t want to goof about . Some reviews at the time said Elvis was stilted in this performance I think the point was he was under immense pressure to perform no double takes this was the big stage on biggest ever performance the world platform .
That Elvis wanted to be taken seriously is one reason proffered as to why he didn't move around much on stage for "Aloha." He wanted his vocals to do the "talking" not his hips.
Makes you think you too , lack of sleep and nerves ! Wanting perfection as always ! But anything ELVIS I LOVE TO KNOW ! Highly appreciate your Elvis knowledge and being an Elvis Fan AWESOME VIDEO LIKE ALL OF THEM 🆒❤️👑🔥👍🏼👏🏼
Singers nowadays have monitors on Stage where they can read the lyrics off of so no shame there for Elvis and he probably would have welcomed that "with arms unfurled"
@Koletti Pireaus Are You not familiar with the English language???? This is a common expression used by millions, past present and Future. And there is No Shame in driving or walking to work. Many have read this comment and only You Have A problem with It.
Brian, Exactly, no shame for reading cue cards for lyrics ~ it's quite funny with video rehearsal of "I just can't help believing" then before going on stage, he was stressing, the words man can u put them under the stool 🤩
How you managed to get this , I’ll never know!! This was 😉 amazing...love all the little details you come up with!!it makes me get to know 🕺 even better.what a good friend 🕺 had in Charlie hodge. He never betrayed him, even at the end👍
Elvis was very nervous. Everyone gets nervous. Elvis was THE MAN. The MOST beautiful MAN GOD Created EVER!!!! It really doesn't matter that he reads the words.. As long as he's singing. Even when ELVIS messes up. It's GREAT cuz he's human. YOU'RE ONE of the only younger guys that recognizes that ELVIS was the most loved entertainer in his day. Good for you.. I saw him 4 times in Vegas the 1 time in AZ.. My Grandkids know who ELVIS is. They are 10 and 5...
Now days the words are on screens down by the sound monitors...he new all the songs but probably just wanted the reassurance of them being to hand.. totally real...
Elvis admitted he didn't know the song in one of his performance's. I don't think he was actually trying to be sneaky, he got it right and did an excellent show.
Elvis, Packed So Much Into, around, 24 years, from High School until Death, I'm Really Happy We Have Historians So, We Can Know More of The Greatest Entertainer That Ever Lived...
So what Elvis was a perfectionist I forget things myself and Elvis had a lot of songs to remember when he was on stage he always gave his all for his fans and that is why we love him always and forever
Jeez. How many songs did he record? 700 or better? Hard to remember every one perfectly. He was human. Made him more lovable & genuine. He made up for it with his connection to his fans & 110% + effort in every performance. Let's see how manyother performers could do with 2 shows a day almost everyday for 6 weeks at a time & then on your time off rehearse, record albums and search for new material. Don't know of any other performer that worked as hard as he did to his own detriment. God bless him for all he did. There will never be another like him. ❤
Elvis also did a rehearsal performance of the song " Early morning rain" for that concert as a bonus and you can see him reading some of the lyrics on his hand
Brandon, did you see the concert when Elvis Started singing, Are You Lonesome Tonight. And he started off singing the second verse. He caught himself. And says to his band, wait a minute, that's not right. And then starts it over. Remember the one concert where Elvis felt he messed up big time. And he said oh he double hockey sticks, there goes 29 years straight down the ?. Then there was the concert, where Elvis just kept laughing. I don't think a fan in the World complained about any of those times. The Hawaii special meant a lot to Elvis, even though Hawaii is part of America. He felt he was representing America that night. That's why he had the suit done in red white and blue. And why he had the Eagle put on that suit. It was said that Elvis didn't want to insult anyone's feelings from all the other Countries. As we all know Elvis loved God, his Country and his Family. I don't know about others, but I liked when Elvis would kind of mess up. He always had a way to laugh it off, as if it was part of the show. And within minutes start off again, and belt it out. They made Elvis stay kind of tame compare to what others do today. Lisa recently shared something with Elvis and her fans. She said her favorite song was Separate Ways. She said her Dad told her, the second verse was written about her. Then she said, I just don't like the person who wrote it. He and his buddies know the real reason they were fired. So they wrote that book. They tried to destroy my Father's dignity. They hurt him really bad. She said she will never forgive them. Her Birthday just past Feb. 1. You can still see her pain from the lost of her Son.
Elvis was very excited and very nervous about the concert be broadcasted live to 50 Countries. He wanted that more then special. Think about all the pressure that was on him. The News and the promoters of that event. Kept repeating no other Entertainer at that time, could of done what Elvis did. And when he announced how much money they had brought in. Elvis gave the credit to his fans. Elvis himself had stated, his goal was to give the most powerful concert. And have everyone enjoy the show and enjoy themselves. I kind of figured there were a lot of little tricks they did. Linda Thompson's Brother who ended up being put on Elvis Security Team. Had stated during an interview that there were several things they did, that the Audience / Fans didn't pick up on. He went on to say, remember at the end of all his concerts. Elvis would lose track on which way to go out. So once Elvis started bowing down to the Audience. Joe would flash a flash light on the floor of the stage, once Elvis would see the light from the flashlight. He would give a signal, usually still holding his hands out forward. Once he saw the light, he would keep moving towards where he saw the light. And usually just as Elvis was heading down the steps, Joe E. would be at the top waiting for Elvis to get closer, then he would go up and help Elvis to walk down the steps, so he wouldn't get hurt. Elvis had said many times that he was for getting the words to his songs. One thing I picked up on, when Elvis is performing and on certain songs, he would use his arms to let the drummer know, when he wanted the drummer to hit the thimbles. And when the Sweet Inspiration would join in. Once they joined in, Elvis would look over their way, with a smile and shake his head. Letting them know, they were right with him. During practice you can see and hear how Elvis had the ear to tell when something wasn't right or not in the right key. I'm sure you caught on to it. It sounded great to Us, but Elvis could always tell if someone was playing in the wrong key or singing in the right key. Elvis was very in tune to his band. I don't feel your disrespecting Elvis, when you share little things like that. Also in my opinion, I don't think it means Elvis was not professional. I see it the opposite. Because Elvis was so professional and had the ear to pick up on things. Just because from time to time he had to look for a sheet that Charlie would hold up, with the words to certain songs. Elvis was a perfectionist. After every concert as Elvis is walking through the Garages or trying to get to his Penthouse. He always asked his Guys, how was it? Was the sound quality good?. I appreciate all the research you do, pointing out little things Elvis did. Thank you again for all you do. Stay Safe. God Bless.
In fact, while singing “I just can’t help believing” (the concert in 70) he got the lyrics wrong. You can hear that in the second part of the song (after the break in the middle). Charlie in the background sings it the way it should be. Elvis laughs even a bit, and quickly change the words. “When she smiles and whisper magic”
well that was cause he had forgot the lyrics, he also had the sheet at burning love in 72 cause he could never learn the damn lyrics, which is also why he hated burning love haha
Elvis knew all these songs by heart, he was just worried about how to give a wonderful concert, he was afraid that he would forget the words, so he allowed himself to peep. It's a normal thing, I don't see anything wrong with that.
Elvis did not know these songs by heart as you say. He was constantly messing up and forgetting his lyrics during rehearsals despite having performed them so many times over the years. This is not me trying to throw shade at our man Elvis but he did not know them by heart and he said that many times, if he knew the songs by heart he would not need to be reading from a sheet now would he?
Remembering words was an ongoing theme throughout Elvis's career. I think that at times he had such difficulty remembering words that he went ahead and shortened some songs. A good example is his studio release of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. I thought it was kind of a shame that he left off the final verse because it was so beautiful. Several years later in 1976 he included it in the Burning In Birmingham concert when he was singing it to Ginger Alden before the entire crowd. "The first time, ever I lay by you, I felt your heart beat close to mine,"
During the Aloha Rehearsal Elvis got a lot of songs wrong, to begin with, in Burning Love he starts singing the ending of the second verse, and the rest of the song just gets really confusing, by Welcome To My World he sings lyrics that don't even exist in the song, so in the end he really needed the lyrics for songs he performed just a while back (My Way he started in August 4 1972), songs like Welcome To My World that he was performing for the first time, and even for songs that he was performing for a long time, all of this is completely understandable. Like it was said during the video, in the TTWII he had the sheet to the lyrics of some songs, and like I Just Cant Help Believing he even had to read the lyrics to Polk Salad Annie in the August 12 midnight show even though he was performing the song since January 1970
I believe Billy saying something about his hitting his head and they had to delay production on the movie for almost 2months and Parker came to see him telling him he had to go back because of his contract and Elvis went back. I've watched some of his rehearsals and he would get the lines out of order, but would realize it and stop the band and pick up where he was supposed to be or he'd have Charlie bring the song sheet over to him. He would change words to a song sometimes, but that was Elvis, or masking his disability? It doesn't matter to me because all the stuff health wise he was going through, I'm even More appreciative of him!
WHO CARES IF HE NEEDED CUE CARDS, DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD REMEMBER ALL THE WORDS TO THE SONGS. ESP WITH THOUSAND N THOUSAND OF PEOPLE N IN THE ALOHA CONCERT, I THINK NOT SAMUEL EP1975.I WAS FRIENDS WITH CHARLIE HODGE FOR 8YEARS AFTER E DIED N SAID HE ALWAYS WAS NERVOUS BEFORE GOING ON STAGE. CHARLIE WAS HIS BEST FRIEND AND CONFIDANT. HE SANG HARMONY WITH E N OFTEN WOULD MOVE CLOCER TO E TO ASSIST SINGING ESP AT END OF SUSPICIOUS MINDS.. YES ALOT OF SONGS . AND YES I SAW MANY CUE CARDS AT ALOHA CONCERT HE WOULD FORGET SOME WORDS BUT WHO IS LISTENING TO THE WORDS.. I WAS IN 3RD ROW AT ALOHA N DIDNT CARE IF HE JUST STOOD THERE. CHARLIE SAID EVEN SOME OF HIS BAND N BACKUP SINGERS WOULD BE NERVOUS INCLUDING HIMSELF
I've always caught that glance. I guess between trying to remember so many songs and the nervousness he went through in his live shows, hey better safe than sorry. Good video. Good topics. No one else does videos about the small interesting stuff.
Fun fact about "I just cant help believing". if you watch the video from TTWII, at 3:44 time stamp, Elvis and Charlie sings together. Elvis sing "When She Smiles... and whisper a magic" followed by a cute laughter like "I knew it was going to happen" . You can hear Charlie singing the correct lyrics "when she's whispering ..." being aware of Elvis switching lyrics and instead of dropping off completely he blurs the lyrics so the harmony stays there supporting the main melodic line leaving Elvis free to sing whatever. CHARLIE Hodge was like a shadow that arrives ahead instead of following. The whole band if you pay attention to any live show have EYES and EARS glued to Elvis. Elvis had always an ear on Charlie Hodge too. Examples of great musicianship here folks!
Elvis must of been so nervous he had a lot of songs it must of been hard remembering all of them. I don't blame him I would do exactly the same thing I'm not sure but don't they have monitors now
He just didn't want to mess up such a big occasion especially as time was key.... He probably also didn't think it would look great if he's reading the lyrics... Not that it bothered us... I think in the rehearsal show he does actually forget some of the words to My Way so was just been extra careful in the real thing
Yeah he didn’t want to have a flub in front of the world. But, he seemed more carefree in the 50 on TV. Televised viewership was lower but his whole career was riding on those performances if ya think about it.
Elvis had memory loss following a head injury that he suffered at his LA home in the late 60s. That's why he would forget the lyrics to songs including the simple line songs. But in Aloha he was nervous as hell. You can see it all the way to the end of the show. He was more concerned about screwing up (like normally on stage) in front of the entire planet instead of just going out and be himself. He was stiff as a board throughout that show. Nothing like what we see on 8mm from the November concert in Hawaii just two months earlier. He was under a lot of pressure that night.
Yes he was under a lot of pressure. Did he really suffer memory loss and as a result of that head injury? I never heard that. That would explain for some of these things. Interesting
@@ElvisistheMan_ He fell getting out of the shower at his home in LA and hit his head on the porcelain tub. Priscilla heard him yell out but that by the time she got there he was rubbing his head laughing. So she thought he was ok. He seemed fine until he was having trouble that day remembering his lines in the movie he was making at the time. So they had him checked out. He was also complaining of headaches so they gave him meds. It's believed that this may have triggered the beginning of his addiction.
@@mikem957 He wasn't getting out of the shower. He tripped over a chord that was on the floor. When Priscilla found him, he was passed out cold. He was put on bedrest for several days so he didn't hit his head and then go back to the studio. They halted production on the movie. He had a serious concussion. This happened during the filming of Clambake in 1967 a few months before he married Priscilla. and Elvis had been taking drugs for several years. You might want to do some research before you post.
Theres no way your a hater for embracing what is Elvis' dynamics, I did as a kid when i watched him for aloha and the 77 comcert and appreciate the fact you did the same... thanks for that cause it made me smile seeing im not the only one looking at his small inflections
And yet in the later years, due to his Glycoma, with all the flashing he couldn't see anything by the end of the concerts, and was escorted from the stage to his dressing room. It would take hours for his vision to return. Thus the large sunglasses phase.
I have as well. I used to tape the sheet of lyrics on the stage in front of me. Elvis recorded over 400 songs. There's no way anyone could remember the words to all of those songs.
@ Edward Bonthrone many people he worked with, musicians and actors have said he had a photographic memory; i.e., he'd not only know his lines in his movies, he'd know everyone else's lines as well...but, yes, he was human.
Ive seen this thousands of times and never noticed this lol. Thanks mate. Charlie was a great friend to Elvis. I love how he also doesnt know the words to Just Cant Help Believing. Also the greatest thing is they left the mistake in the released version. I wrote this before I watched the end where you mentioned this lol.
Hi David, Great detective work. I had noticed before but what I really loved about Elvis was he sneakily looked at the words but also wasn't worried about making a big issue about it either. Love every angle of the man. Thanks sherlock xxx 💝
Love this..but I also love it when he says the words wrong as well and makes fun of it..he could have said all the words wrong as far as I'm concerned...just to look at him is enough for me xx
I just caught that! I've been watching videos of that concert for over 40 yrs now, and I never saw Charlie's reaction until just now! It's not a closeup of Charlie, though. In fact, Charlie is still singing harmony for Elvis on the final bar of "Can't Help Falling In Love" when Elvis flings his cape into the audience. They dissolve to a closeup of Elvis as he kneels, acknowledges the audience, looks back at his band, then they cut to a wide shot of the band, and Charlie puts his hand on his head, as if to say, "WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST SEE? DID ELVIS THROW THAT EXPENSIVE CAPE INTO THE AUDIENCE?" A classic moment in Elvis history. Thanks for the heads up, I'll always look for this memorable image from now on, whenever I watch "Aloha From Hawaii"!
Did you also notice right before Elvis throws the cape into the audience, as he reaches to shake hands with the girls in the front row (left side of the stage), he moves to our left and shakes hands with one final girl, and she tries hard to yank Elvis' ring off his finger?
Remember that Elvis' father said she almost had a heart attack when he saw him throw the cape. Because of how much it costs. You guys know that jumpsuit weighed 70 pounds distributed through his body. Those jumpsuits were friggin heavy guys. Think of how he did that show twice consecutively.
I read that Marlon Brando often could not memorize the dialogues of his movies too, so they wrote the dialogues on the card for him. Well, one reason is that there was no playback at the time, everything that happened was completely live and real, the other reason is the lyrics of Elvis songs, often not simple and easy words, but meaningful and sometimes complex words. I think no matter how strong we see him, but as a human being he eventually became stressed and eager, it's good you're talking about these things, the thing I learned about Elvis fans is that, like other artist fans, they are not They are not extremists or fanatics, they are realistic, punctual and witty like Elvis.
Good job! Saw these cue cards a long time ago. NEVER noticed the Singer Special Cue Cards.... Also, never noticed the lean in. Good video! Love your details and the great attention you give to all the details! Great Job!!
I f i had to remember all the songs Elvis did, i would need prompting for sure... who am i kidding lol i can never remember any song by heart... Elvis rocked my soul and still does
