Lucius Malfoy is seen taking a book out of Ginny Weasley's cauldron and dropping two back in. The second book that he drops in is Tom Riddle's diary, which plays a significant role in the plot of the film. The diary is actually a Horcrux, an object that contains a fragment of the dark wizard Lord Voldemort's soul. When Ginny Weasley starts writing in the diary, she becomes possessed by Voldemort, who uses her body to open the Chamber of Secrets and unleash the basilisk upon Hogwarts.
