In this video, I share an FL Studio music production tip that I learned from my RU-vid subscribers. I previously mentioned a method of creating ambient and atmospheric pads but some of my viewers knew of a better technique using the Fruity Convolver! Here I create some ambient guitar pads as well as using a free synth to create a supporting atmospheric pad.

To clarify, the FTT algorithm in that video is the same FTT algorithm we use to calculate most things in Music production. There are other methods for many things (eg. Wavelet Transform) however FTT is the most straight forward.

I've done industrial music, and experimental noise music since the 80's and this is a technique I've used with reverb quite a bit. It makes almost everything sound like a synthesizer. I used to do this before DAWS were a thing, and I would do it manually. But once DAWS and plugins came around, this became REAL easy to do. One of the things I used to love to do with this technique was that I would get a three or four minute recording of anything, like a radio station playing music, or talk radio, or even just one of those sound effect CD's or records that they used to sell back in the day. I take the recording and just... automate the volume, having it start at 0 and I would just, randomly kick the volume up to the maximum that I wanted the volume to be for a few seconds, and then I would drop the volume back to 9 again. I would do this randomly through the whole track, so it would just sound like someone's on the volume knob of a radio, turning it all the way up and then off randomly. Once that's set, run that audio through a reverb effect like this with no dry, and relatively high reverb. The results create a LOT of interesting random sounds that just sound awesome rolling in and out of the music. It's excellent to throw in the background of one of your mixes if you're into doing experimental stuff.

It's worth noting that the Convolver is actually a very, VERY under-rated reverb. I find it actually sounds better than a lot of paid plugins out there. It sounds very natural, lush and seems to sit well in the mix,. Also, it's hard to actually get it to wash over your sound whereas with other plugins, the reverb tends to be too dominant and needs a bit of tweaking in order for it to be better sat in the mix.

I thought the coolest thing about this technique was overlooked for sound designing purposes - you don't have to stop at a white noise or pink noise sample. You can literally put any sample as your impulse response. People who make a dubstep subgenre called color bass will sometimes use a pad playing a chord to convolve an atonal bass or percussion in order to make it sound tonal. If I'm not mistaken Au5 has a video on this where he uses MCabinet instead of Fruity Convolver Edit: found the video, it's called 6 ways to color bass and the convolver section starts at 8:57
@Dubbudha

I recently started using blured pads as some sort of hidden theme. Sometimes I keep them, sometimes I leave them at the end, but they are fantastic to get into a specific mood to set the tone for the rest of the composition.

Very cool effect. I managed to reproduce it pretty well in Pro Tools by loading a 30 second, dual mono white noise WAV into Convology XT and fiddling with the settings. Control of the envelope and EQ is not nearly as intuitive. But it works. I made the white noise WAV with the Avid Signal Generator plugin. Convology is including with subscription plans. I expect it could be done with most convo verbs provided they let you load your own IRs and give you some envelope control.

Man, I would really love to use FL Studio's effects while playing guitar. Currently, I use FL to make samples from recorded sounds out in the world or from sample I make entirely in FL. The amount of effects available in FL is so impressive that it would save me literally thousands of dollars on pedals. Just a couple of days ago, I spent close to a $1000 on two reverb... 2... just 2.... pedals (Strymon Big Sky and Earthquaker Devices' Avalanche). I don't even want to think of what i spent over the last month, or how much I'll spend next month. Analog pedals sound so much better; in addition, they 'feel' much closer to real time reactions to my playing (especially when playing a 20 note phrase of 64th notes, for example). With real pedals, the reverb feels like it's coming out of the guitar itself, as opposed to reacting to it. Again, especially noticeable during faster or complex chord changes on 6 strings. My PC is no slouch either. Ahh well, i can dream that, perhaps, one day, PC digital effects, amplifiers/preamps and cabinet modelers will sound, and most importantly, play much closer to the real thing that manufacturers stop making hardware, and Fl will have all we need....one day. WARNING: Don't ever buy a Strymon, Chase BLiss or Meris (to name only three) effect pedal. If so, your bank account will be so empty, within a month, that it wouldn't sound thick and full; instead, it would start sounding just like a nice Strymon Plate reverb.... hahaah.... get it? :D
