The Mariano/Pedro comparison really messed me up when I first realized. Cuz that’s why she wanted him to marry Isabela and didn’t consider him marrying Dolores
Her side of family contains purple too. She wear purple because the flower, roses theme her powers have. Hers doesn't match Alma that much either Luisa have purple too, even in child picture. Their family contains bluish, purplish and greenish colours
When the movie came out it was a well known theory among fans that the hug in Bruno's vision wasn't Isa and Mirabel, bur rather young abuela and Mirabel. This would help explaining why the house didn't fully recover after the sisters' hug, but started its recovery (aka, reconstruction) after abuela's hug in the lake, representing her making amends with her past and embracing the way her family worked in the present
@@critterwhisperer5821 I'm not attacking anybody. And you don't get to tone-police me. I can talk however the hell I want. It's very obviously Isabela in the vision and I am so tired of seeing the same wrong take over and over. Just like I'm tired of seeing people say that the reason Mirabel doesn't have a gift is because she wiped her hands on her dress, a similarly dumb theory.
I love that the "pretty one" had dark skin and an aguileña nose, it's really nice to see features that normally get dismissed as ugly represented in a different light in media
Latinos have always been glorified as "sexy" "seductive" women/men, I wouldn't say media has depicted them as a whole as ugly just the ones who don't fit the clique mold they created themselves. I loved watching it and seeing my grandparents get excited about all the Colombian details, they really put alot of love into this film.
There’s also the whole deal with Tia Pepa because she has features frequently villainized, like in Mother Gothel of Tangled (although they rectified that issue somewhat in the series). God, and these “witch” costumes are still up in stores…
Unfortunately she has the biggest eyes, cartoonishly freakish proportions, in order to make up for it, instead of them letting her just own her skin and nose. Not to mention she has straight hair. To me Dolores was the prettiest, and she had even darker skin and super curly hair. And I would have liked her just as much if she had the aguileña nose.
@@himikotoga3Same here, it really is beautiful! Unfortunately, it seems that the WASP hegemony doesn't think so and tries to force women with these features to "fix" it, like getting a rhinoplasty for instance.
Also, Isabela is the first born out of all the grandchildren. Julieta (the first born out of the triplets) also seems to be the golden child out of Alma's kids.
A lot of parents do that 😕 Also, I don't understand something : Julieta is the eldest triplet and she looks like Abuela too but I don't understand why Abuele didn't try to force her before like she did woth Isabela
Yeah, it may seem weird, but keep in mind that Alma also lost her home and husband to a bunch of men on horses and was left by herself to take care of the whole town and her triplets. That can really mess you up and cause you to make decisions that seem weird to other people, but to you, you just want to keep your family safe
Something i also noticed is that she called Isabela and Mariano's hypothetical kids blessings, dehumanizing them and seeing them for their hypothetical gifts rather than people.
It’s meant to be “weird” and disfunctional, because the entire movie is about the cultural phenomenon of unhealthy and strict family roles in Hispanic culture.
@@mitsubachihachi9643That’s how MOST parents operate. They work hard to give their children a better life that they never had. If you think it’s weird then you’ve got issues
I knew it from the beginning. They look exactly alike, right down to hair type. And I saw the resemblance between Pedro and Mariano instantly. She really tried to make her ideal alternate reality life through her family and a dude that looks exactly like her husband.
Isabela is the most relatable character for me and my favorite. She embodies the struggles I went through as a child, although I let my parents down gloriously, where she stayed strong up until the end.
I Love Isa, especially her viciousness, IT IS so easy to See where Mirabel and Bruno are getting abused, but what she goes through IS even more divious cause No one Sees what IS wrong about IT, more so resents the golden child for her supposedly better Standing . . She has all the right in the world to BE bitter . . .Alma activly pittet her against everyone that could have been a Support to her
Not Just in years, ever, IT IS so rich in how every single characters IS deep, and could have Had their own whole movie, how IT really did IT Research to capture the Heart of ITS Location, how IT actually made an effort in portraying a realistic variaty of physical appearances . . . And ITS pretty much the only movie with a real Message and solution that actually helps people in real life!!! Alma was Not evil, she needed therapy, still does Not Changes the fact that she IS the reason that everyone Else needs therapy now too and she has to Take responsability! All of them need to learn to communicated and establish bounderies and learn how to Look Out for themselfs and the Others. Love IS Not enough! Relationship are Work but Not everything IS lost If everyone can agree upon trying! AS cute AS Coco IS, IT kinda failed the topic of generational Trauma in a way encanto very much did not
Wtf, this makes the psychology behind Alma even darker. I did noticed some resemblance between them, but this is another level... Without the intervention of Mirabel this could've gotten worse, with Alma forcing Isa to be the next leader of the family, and Isa eventually falling into a swirl of negative energy destroying everything Alma once treasured
Alma wanted Isabella to have the life she always wanted. She thought she was helping her when she betrothed her to Mariano but really she was trapping her in a life she never wanted.
That's not a rare thing except it's more often the parents who want to live their lost dream by procuration thanks to their kids. I remember a book, from a collection I read as a teen, where the MC is a girl who is a junior champion in swimming, but we learn that her mother was a champion too when she was young but couldn't make to the playoffs because of a car accident. Of course, the MC is really good but her mother is very strict about it at a point she's mad at her because she narrowly lost a race. When the father blames his wife about it, she answers that she has to works more because she decided to devote her life to it but he says " No, YOU decided to devote HER life to it ". Ironically, the MC's name is Isabelle.
I also noticed that Pedro looks like Mariano to a degree. Whether Alma realized it or not, she really used Isabela to live out the life she never had with Pedro.
One of my favorite things about the movie is that each of the family has it’s colors. Maribel’s side is more cool toned while Delores’s family is more of warm colors, but alma is a nice dark magenta. Isabella sticks out in the cool toned family and looks as though she is closer to alma with pink being closer to magenta that it is cool toned like blue.
I never noticed that! She really does resemble Alma down to her color scheme. When Isabella finds her true self at the end, she has a mix of more vibrant and less pastel colors, which are completely different from her original design. They’re more wild and bold when compared to the rest of the family. She really sticks out as different.
i can say that a lot of daughters have to suffer with mother’s who live vicariously through them cause their childhood-young adulthood was stolen from them. especially young latina girls. it’s very sad, but very difficult on the children.
I can kinda see this. I think it's also largely to do with the fact that she's the first grandchild (proof that her family is not only surviving but thriving... as far as Alma can tell) and... Isabela is pretty. She's the eldest, and pretty so she's got big expectations on her to find a husband and make more magical Madrigals and "keep the miracle burning." She probably intended to groom Isabela into a future Madrigal matriarch, since she was the eldest grandchild. And then it turned out that really Mirabel was the best suited for the role.
It’s kinda like watching Toddlers and Tiaras when the pageant moms try to live their dreams through their young daughters and expect them to be perfect, when the daughters want nothing to do with it lmao
Simply because alma sees her young self in Isabela and her being the first born grandchild to come of age. Alma wanted to give isa the life she never had with Pedro, even going as far with finding a suitor that looks like him
"mom I don't wanna be a Karen when I grow up" "Honey, Karen's are underrated you'll understand when you grow up to be just like me. Why else would we name you Karen?"
I feel like Alma was actually living vicariously through Isabela. She knew her idea of a perfect life was taken from her, and she wanted to recreate it with Isabela. Mariano looks like a more muscled Abuelo Pedro, and dresses like him too. So in her mind, she's not only living through Isa, but giving her a perfect life. Isabela doesn't view marriage and kids as the perfect life, which goes against Alma's more traditional views.
You’re putting words into Isabela’s mouth, kinda like Abuela did. Isabela’s views on marriage and children aren’t known because she never got the chance to express these views-she merely admits that she doesn’t want to marry Mariano. That’s not surprising. Even people who dream of marriage and children wouldn’t want to marry someone who they didn’t love. It’s likely that, if Isabela got to know someone really well and got the chance to fall for them on her own terms, she’d be all for marrying them.
I’ve commented this in another video about why isabela is the favorite one: I thought it was because isabela was the only kid to get a positive vision from Bruno.
I really how Bruno's prophecy for Isabela sounds so positive and supports the "perfect princess" image Isabela plays for everyone. At that point of the movie, viewers would think/assume that the prophecy had been fulfilled when in fact, it still wasn't. Isabela does have a dream life, Mirabel promised it to her when they sang that song together and she did get it at the end of the movie when she finally gets to be who she wants to be. Also, her magic did grow like grapes in the vine.
It's because she's the oldest grandchild. Grandchildren of large families know. I have 12 cousins on my grandma's side of the family and every single one of us knows that the oldest is the favorite. Only one who might be unaware is the other favorite; the small cute one.
Legit tho this is a reason why my siblings are my grandmas’ favorites. Brother reminds one grandma of her late husband, sister reminds other grandma of herself.
I knew a mother who told me that she has to purposely show equal love to all of her children even if her second daughter looks the way she always wanted to look. Abuela could have recognized this and made the effort to not favor one over the other.
Abuela Alma just wanted to live vicariously through Isabella. She subconsciously sees isabella as herself and is trying to right wrongs and imperfections that occured in her own past by projecting her concerns and paranoia of another tragic incident like Abuelo
this is actually a really cool dynamic to create between characters, its simple and meaningful. giving someone the perfect life only hurts them in the end.
Basically a parent or grandparent want the child to have what they wanted without considering they are an individual who will likely not want exactly what the parent figure wanted.
No bc like that’s why my sibling is the Mamaw’s favorite grandchild- Edit: No one is being rude in the replies? We’re all just talking about what we call our grandparents.
i’m my grandmas “favorite” i thought it was because she raised me for a good portion of my life but my mom pointed out that i look a lot like my grandma when she was younger
It could also be that you tend to behave the way she thinks you should. I was the favorite granddaughter because I preferred to study rather than go out a socialize. She didn't like any of my siblings because they weren't as studious.
I'm nearly my grandma's fav. Not only I'm the eldest granddaughter from a son, I looked the most like her when she was young according to my dad and grandpa. Wide eyes, wide forehead, resting face syndrome. My grandpa even called me with her nickname and became his fav granddaughter due to this. (My grandma even got upset when my mom named me the way I am, because she wanted to name me after her. In my family, it's normal for others to name your children, my brother's name came from my aunt and grandpa, the same aunt also offered other names for her nephews and nieces) But then my youngest cousin was born, the last grandchild from the last son/child and born AT THE EXACT SAME DATE as my grandma. So while I inherit some of her eye-catching traits from my dad, the last granddaughter had the same birthday as her and had the virtue of being the youngest. I knew my place was taken when she was born at the same date as my grandma, sighhhh.
My grandma has 3 children. And the oldest son is her favorite. Also his son is grandma's favorite grandson. She never apreciate my mother, who always takes care of her. Grandma speaks behind her back, and has controled my mum for all her life. That's why I hated both Abuela Alma and Isabela at the begining. I see my mum's pain in Mirabel.
@@blackwolf1424 It would be a good idea for you to have your mother stop taking care of her. My mother took care of my grandmother until I finally put my foot down at the last abuse that is when they tried to evict her from the apartment, but still have to take care of my grandmother. I just took her and moved ASAP. They tried to force her to live in the ghetto, but I said, 'no'.
That is so crazy. Blew me away! That comparison is so true! Alma saw herself in Isa since she was almost identical. But the thing with the flower was the coolest. The single white flower! And then even crazier, the marriage thing!
oh wow, thats a pretty good point! i never thought much of appearance-wise, but yea, Isabella and Mariano do look like Abuela Alma and Abuelo Pedro when they were young adults! it could very well be Alma is projecting onto Isabella to give her granddaughter what she couldnt have and hope to make her life perfect and free of troubles. obviously, unbeknownst to Alma, she was the CAUSE of Isa's troubles in her life, causing her stress and frustration, but even still she hid it to make her grandmother and family happy. ironically enough, w/ all that in mind, Alma nearly forced sacrifices onto Isa just like the colonists forced Alma to make sacrifices: Alma lost her original home and became a single mom to triplets when the colonists invade and killed Pedro, whereas Isa was almost forced to marry a man she didnt love as well as sacrifice being able to truly express herself by keeping up the "perfect daughter/granddaughter/niece" act. if that was what Disney planned, thats sheer brilliance, like omg!
Not really. We have to remember Alma was scared as hell about loosing what could protect her family. Since Isabella was at the point where she could be married, Alma was thinking that those children would continue having gifts to protect the Encanto. The problem is Alma went about trying to protect her family in the wrong way. Isabella and Alma aren't narcissists, they just aren't perfect.
in the original idea of encanto, isabella was supposed to run away with a man she liked. it explains why she's the "chosen one" to get married to Pedro. To me, it's a sign that the grandma controlled more then their powers, and it includes controlling the future of the family.
I remember when I first watched it I was like “huh isa and mariano look very similar to alma and pedro must be there was of shoeing they’re related so they will look like eachother” then on my second rewatch I was like OMG Alma see’s herself in Isa and wants to give her the most perfect life which turns out to be extremely toxic as she abuses her entire family’s powers in order to make her and Isa look the most golden.
She is just like her grandma and Mariano is like Pedro.. Alma wanted Isabella to have the life she didn't but I feel like they both are fools at that moment.
This has me thinking, maybe one of the reasons why Isabela didn’t want to marry Mariano is because she KNEW he looked like her grandfather and probably thought it was weird to marry someone that looks like him 😆
"Ull ma" does not work either. Say "Al" the same way you say the 'Al' in "Weird Al Yankovic" and then say "ma" (as in the short version of mom). Then say it together and fast. "Alma".
