Check out all my videos at / evolutionstoneware . Click 'subscribe' if you want to know when I post new videos. This video is a demo of a diddley bow (1 string cigar box guitar or CBG) I made on 12/30/15.
While I've made 2 lap diddley bows and 4 CBGs with 3 strings with my husband on the power tools and me on design, this is the first one I've made on my own and first one with a round neck. The pickup is a piezo disc pickup pre-wired to a jack from cbgitty.com.
Most of the music I played I learned from Justin Johnson tutorials. He has a great DVD on playing the diddley bow available on his site at rootsmusicschool.com. The long song I played was based on a tune by Elmore James.
I've been a hobby guitarist for 16 years, but I'm totally new to slide guitar. This is so fun! I love the simplicity, and there is something amazing about playing music on an instrument you made yourself. For really simple instructions on making CBGs I like the book Handmade Music Factory by Mike Orr. There are tons of other great books and online resources too. Check out Cigar Box Nation online to get started.
I had to turn off the Christmas tree lights while using the Mustang amp because they were causing some electromagnetic interference and creating an annoying hum on the amp.

Very clever of you! So funny that the dog jumped off the couch and left before you started. Like, "Oh, no! She's playing that thing again!"

Of all the video's on the Diddley Bow that I've watched, and I've watched a fair few, this is by far my favourite, thanks for sharing.

Great! These things are bad for my guitar playing - I can't stop playing the 1 string, so I don't play my 'regular' guitar as much! They are so much fun, and because they are so light, I pick mine up every time a commercial comes on. Damn thing makes me late for work, too.... You get some good sounds out of it, and now that 3 years have passed, I'm sure you are rocking it well!

Nice big box for a diddley, sounds great as usual for your builds, I've done all mine the same way, but use biscuit tins that people give me, there great for playing acoustic at night when others are watching the TV, do the same with the three and four strings, so much fun for little money.

Cool. Why don't you try to make it from Ceramic? I am sure it will make a great performance,

If you make the neck flimsy enough you can bend up and down. Surprisingly loud acoustic. For fun put a flashing led on the inside to make your sound holes light up.

I've thought of making a diddly bow or berimbau for years (I'm in my 60s). I've settled on 'bow' rather than 'bau.' Your's better fits my definition of elegant and 'form follows function,' better than any I've seen. Would you be willing to share some details?
@EvolutionStoneware
@EvolutionStoneware 6 лет назад
Paul Drowns thank you! I'd be happy to share. On this one I used a pine dowel 1" in diameter, but an oak one would be more elegant. I used a hand saw to cut out 2 chunks parallel to each other about 1.5" long to make a flat zone on 2 sides to mount the string tuner at the top. I used a drill to drill the hole for the tuner to go through. I set this up for a 25.5" scale, and you can find a calculator for where to mark the fret positions on several internet sites like stewmac.com. I used a 1" Forstner drill bit to drill holes on the top & bottom of the box as close to the lid as possible to pass the dowel through. Tarp ferrules were used for the sound holes & simply glued on. A disc piezo was taped inside the lid under the bridge for amplification. Check out Glenn Watt & Shane Speal on RU-vid for some great videos on how to build one.

Thank you very much! I have problems from the git go. I'm a 'recovering' traditional basket maker, use and restore hand tools, and design in wood, stone, and steel, so I have a tendency to over think (sometimes for years:-) before acting. The sheer simplicity and sound of your instrument is what caught my interest. I'll abandon the tiger maple 1 x 2 I look at daily, and the perfect box I'm searching for, and get a dowel (probably oak), build what you made...and learn to play. Thany you for testifying for simplicity!

Paul Drowns, building & playing these types of instruments is so enjoyable! I've gone on to build much more complex fretted 4 string guitars, but I worked my way up to it. I think it's always good to start out simple yet fun and get a good 'win' under your belt, then go from there. Other great resources include CogarBoxNation.com which is an online group where people share all kinds of details on building cigar box guitars and Justin Johnson's DVD on how to play the diddleybow.

I just ordered the parts to build a diddley bow but have No idea how to play. Have you ever considered making an instruction video?
@EvolutionStoneware
@EvolutionStoneware 4 года назад
Ohhhh, that's so exciting! You're gonna love it and have so much fun ahead! As far as making an instructional video I figured I couldn't do any better than ones that are already out there, but it could be fun to make one. Do a search for Justin Johnson. He has a great DVD with diddley bow lessons. I bought it, & I really like it. That's where I learned the song in this video. You might enjoy having a cool guitar slide. I make a line of ceramic guitar slides that C. B. Gitty carries. Great job! What string did you use and what did you tune it to?

Thanks Ally. It's an A string from a pack of light acoustic guitar strings, and it's tuned to A.

@@EvolutionStoneware Thanks for your response :). I will try an A on my Diddley Bow. Currently I've got a G and it doesn't sound quite like yours. Did you ever make the second cigar box?
@EvolutionStoneware
@EvolutionStoneware 4 года назад
@@ally8490, I hope you like the sound of the A. The G is a lot higher, so there's a different vibe. Yes, I've made quite a number of cigar box guitars and a couple ceramic guitars too since I'm a potter. I have a few videos up. They're compiled in this playlist. ru-vid.com/group/PLtuH9PA94vwDK4syhp6oSXYbbKm2ywa2O
