At the In-Didj-In-Us gathering of 2012, Dan Flynn plays a didgeridoo that is designed with 12 resonant pitches, arranged in a perfectly tuned Turkish Gypsy scale. Collaborating with Dr. Frank Geipel of Germany, Dan Flynn had this didgeridoo machine lathed to an exact shape as specified by a computer software developed by Dr. Geipel. Simulating the didgeridoo inner shape the software calculates the didgeridoo design based on the desired musical scale. This technique is called CADSD (Computer Aided Didgeridoo Sound Design) and the results speak for themselves.
Dan Flynn's CD, DIDGE & BASS can be purchased via his website

For all the people saying the didgeridoo should only be played as a meditative instrument you need to think of some facts: - Music is a form of expression and anyone is entitled to express themselves how they want - The guitar originated in Spain and now has hundreds of variations across all music genres - The didgeridoo originated in Australia as a story telling medium and it was not allowed to be played by women for spiritual and superstitious reasons. Now it is being contemporised through many art forms also by women. - The didgeridoo can be meditative even though a different genre such as trance or psy (the don't call it trance for no reason) - I play didgeridoo in the contemporary style and find myself getting lost in space even if I'm doing complex rhythms - The didge is not supposed to BE anything other than a tool to make sounds. Anything that you want to create, you are allowed. People who think that the didge should stay in its roots are not allowing it to reach new levels. I'm not trying to attack anyone, just making a point.

Well said.To my mind, if it gives people a means of expressing themselves, then that can only be a good thing ! I have yet to meet another Didge player (and I've met and know loads!) that doesn't also have a healthy respect for it's origins.If people feel offended by it's alternative use to make groovy music, then THEY have chosen to BE offended, as no offense is intended ! :O)The mere fact that the Aboriginal music has inspired and captured the imagination of so many people worldwide is an honouring in itself. I've never heard a Didge played angrily, so all the vibes that have come from the ancestors are GOOD vibes and it's through those vibes that my life has been thoroughly enriched with wonderful friends.

Socrates Petrides personally in don't really like the contemporary style that much but if you take the guitar, it started as an acoustic lute type thing in Arabia an now you can get guitars made from metal with no neck. So if you want to play the didgeridoo like that the no one can stop you.

Originally it was common for the didgeridoo to be played by aboriginal peoples of northern Australia for recreation by both men and women during informal situations outside of ceremonial gatherings (when only the men could play it). So the didgeridoo has been played for non-spiritual reasons by both genders in its earliest homeland for a long time. Other people adopted it in recent times and began to apply their own rules and have tried to convince everyone else to apply them as well. But anyone who investigates the original home of the instrument will quickly come across references to solo, female and non-ceremonial playing of the didgeridoo prior to its adoption by outsiders.

When an instrument from any country has it's origin in old culture it should be respected. I play many instruments, and the ones that have a deep seeded history in culture, I acknowledge. If we don't pay homage to the history of the instrument then we don't understand it and probably have no place in playing it until we accept the importance of it's origins. The didgeridoo is a ceremonial instrument, not was, or just originated from, it still is. Play it for fun if you want, but don't disrespect an ancient culture because your an asshole.

Much like the narrow scaled pipes on an organ are able to simulate the tone of orchestral strings, I found the mid-highs on this performance to be very cello-like. A really great instrument which (I hope) is going to open the world to the sound of the Didge as well as getting more and more builders to start thinking about the possibilities here. Of course, without this really skilled artist, the full potential of this instrument would never have come to light. Really a great performance and one that I think is eye-opening.

No digital effects in the performance. The digital effects are in the design;) With Frank Geipel's CADSD, we are able to tune the trumpet notes to have high "harmonicity", which adds to the cello/violin sound. Make sure to check out Frank's RU-vid video of a "directed evolution" of a CADSD didge by doing a RU-vid search for "CADSD" and clicking on the first video (by CADSDFrank). Also, I said "Turkish Gypsy", but actually it is "Spanish Gypsy", or Flamenco.

Wow, the toots are really tuned well, I tried some similar on my didge but it sounded not as good like that. But Iam interested in melodic playing the didgeridoo. Maybe there is an instrument that is tuned in major scale.

i'm more impressed with his lips. playing didge isn't so hard on your lungs, but, to hit 12 horn notes would be pretty difficult, especially in a melodic order.

Even aborigines who invented it use it for many things other than meditation (Some of their dreamtime rituals are definitely too dark and fast to be meditative for most people, many dreamtime rituals of certain communities focus more on trumpets and singing than meditative drones), do not even have a standard form or name for it. So this meditation bias and cultural appropriation/misunderstanding of what it should be has gotta stop. Wonderful people have worked hard to develop original music and inventions based on it, some respect for that please.
@Nantosuelta
@Nantosuelta 8 лет назад
why do all modern players use it like a sound board!? the didge is supposed to be meditative and transport you to other places and times through the music, this just sounds like a lame nightclub DJ

you are the lame one dude,respecting the istrument is playing it 100% of the capacity musical range, that is not only the drone, personaly i dont like meditative player cus they just make one single note and they are chamanes,gurus,etc just with a lame drone!!! Also there is no aborigen person who play like meditative style, if you go tu arhemland aboriginal people play morerude and rhythmic!!!
