From the letter given to Schindler by the people he protected; "one event that took place during our internment in Bruennlitz in January of this year which deserves special mention was coincidentally a transport of Jewish inmates, that had been evacuated from the Auschwitz concentration camp, Goleschow outpost, and ended up near us. This transport consisted exclusively of more than 100 sick people from a hospital which had been cleared during the liquidation of the camp. These people reached us frozen and almost unable to carry on living after having wandered for weeks. No other camp was willing to accept this transport and it was Director Schindler alone who personally took care of these people, while giving them shelter on his factory premises; even though there was not the slightest chance of them ever being employed. He gave considerable sums out of his own private funds, to enable their recovery as quick as possible. He organized medical aid and established a special hospital room for those people who were bedridden. It was only because of his personal care that it was possible to save 80 of these people from their inevitable death and to restore them to life."
I read a book a couple of years ago called My Grandfather Would have Shot Me by Jennifer Teege. She’s half German, half black, and she is the granddaughter of Amon Goeth. It talks of how she discovered this and how it affected her. I recommend it.
Wow, that’s just incredible, to have such people walk amongst us. I mean imagine who the next Schindler might be, perhaps someone you or I know. Same applies to the bad eggs as well but I’d like to focus on the good ones more.

The childrens loaded on the trucks in Plasow labor camp were gassed to death right behind the Plasow. There is also unconfirmed information that during that process one SS soldier comited suicide because he couldn't watch it.
43:13 Your reaction to this piece of dialogue is a good thing. We should get shocked at the all too common attitudes we’ve had in our history where a group of people have seen another group as less than human. Our kids aren’t born racist, it’s a concept usually pushed on them or reinforced by others. But if left to fester it tends to assuage it’s own guilt by telling the perpetrators of atrocities that they’re not really doing wrong because the victims aren’t human. It’s born of cowardice.
By default, children, older people, those who were ill or disabled, and people without desirable skills were considered "useless eaters" and were the first selected to be killed. That is why the children were removed from the camp on trucks and taken from the train. The events were real, although many of the conversations were added to carry the story. If anything, the film played down the violence very much. Your comments about the girl in the red coat being who Schindler was focused on is an excellent observation, and her presence at the exhumation is where I think Schindler begins to decide to actually try doing something. So beautifully shot, but as you said "brutal".
I would add that workers in the ghetto got a food ration of 850 calories. Imagine how effectively, you could perform on that. "Useless eaters" were allotted between 400-600 depending on circumstances. We had many survivor friends when I was growing up. My grandfather was a physician in the Displaced Person's camps following the liberation. He helped many come to the states. Many survivors would look him up and come visit to show him their families.
10:10 I’m a bit late to this watch along, but wanted to point something out. I may be biased as a history professor when I say this, but a big sign of oppression in societies is when history and the arts get covered up. I moved away from Hong Kong right after China imposed new expression restrictions in 2020. One of the first things to happen after the laws were passed was the disappearance of history books from the shelves and databases of public libraries and universities.

No one would ever think to ask Ukraine to ceasefire on Russia . ..we all want peace and we all don't like war and we all believed the same things as others. But that has nothing to do with it when you start to see something happening you never forget and you ask others to stand with that. We will never forget .
I’d highly recommend Life Is Beautiful for a similar movie but from a less familiar setting, the plight of Jews from Italy. It tells the story of a man and his efforts to protect his family. Wonderful, sad, funny, amazing.

So, I made it through. This movie is a rough one. My grandpa survived a camp, and he only spoke if it a few times. We lost him a few years ago, and I regret not having a conversation about it with him. My family escaped Ukraine/Russia right before the fall of the USSR, and the ones left behind are going through the war situation now. It breaks my heart how horrific the world can truly be. They really had to tone down Amon Goeth as Spielberg thought nobody would believe how truly evil and monstrous he was. Ralph Fiennes who played Goeth took time in between takes to comfort the Schindler Jews on set as his performance and mannerisms were so much like him it caused panic attacks in some of them, if u ever watch footage of him its literally like a mirror image of him his performance is truly amazing.
OMG that’s horrifying… they had actual survivors watch his performance? I mean idk why I’m surprised, to survive the holocaust, you’d have to be extremely resilient and strong, so it makes sense that they would agree to see this performance but that is horrifying for me, idt I’d be able to handle it.
@@AffanReacts yeah I know but yes they did as many wanted to be there to correct certain things,give more information etc but I don't think anyone including Spielberg expected his performance to effect them the way it did. But it really goes to show how spot on his performance was and like I said he was so upset that it was effecting them the way it did, I mean of course you would have flashbacks, PTSD etc but he looks v similar and like I said his mannerisms etc were just a mirror image including that dead sort of a shark like look in his eyes.They gave him more information with certain details like the handkerchief against he held up to his nose as he apparently couldn't stand the smell of Jewish people except for Helena Hirsh who he liked so much he would get close to her with her like oskar said he didn't even make her wear the star of David. The movie was actually made as Spielbergs final piece of work to graduate from school of the arts after a 34 year hiatus as making blockbuster movies. His professor gave him an A minus for it which is so crazy as its a absolute masterpiece. I truly believe it should be shown in school history class like it s in Germany 🇩🇪 I really think everyone should see it at least once so this never happens again but it seems nobody has learned anything from this as things like this have gone on and are still going on arthr world.

On the 25th anniversary of the movie interview with Stephen Spielberg, he said that the little girl in the red coat represented the Jews being ignored by the world. Everybody saw her but nobody did anything to help her.

Yea I did, it was truly heartbreaking, like the whole movie as it is is heartbreaking but when little kids go through that. Idk what it is but it literally makes my heart ache. It just have a impact of a different magnitude.
Hey Affan! It’s been a while since I’ve checked out any your reactions. I love when you react to movies, mate. This is one of many movies that sticks with you.
One thing to remember was that Spielberg shot this at actual locations. Re creating holocaust scenes in these sensitive locations had to be done very carefully and often secretly for obvious reasons. He gave a great interview on this during a Steven documentary on HBO. It took a massive toll on him as well it should. To learn about the Holocaust in a honest raw way is to be traumatized is one of my favorite quotes from a holocaust historian. Never forget your history and don't let people use the monster line on you. Yes these were monsterus acts but saying these people were a case of monsters is dangerous because it leads you down the road that this couldn't happen again. Was just a rare breed of monsters in the 20th century that we snuffed out. The capacity for great love and hate is in all of us. Stand up to monsters especially the one that can grow in you
This movie is his master of master pieces BTW to watch the way it was filmed and have him explain why and how he did it. A master at the top of his game. Releasing Jurassic Park in the same year took him from Hollywood elite to a once in a generation master of film
Just thinking about visiting those places is haunting enough let alone actually being there. When I recently visited my childhood school, I was literally shaking and sweating on my way there. I’ll explain more later. And I agree btw, of course these monsters exist right now and unfortunately will continue to do so. Maybe it’s a language thing but I didn’t mean that they were back then only and that’s the end of it. Please don’t take this as me trying to gain sympathy, or using this to take anything away from these events. This is just something that I have experienced and it might help you understand my thought process when watching this movie. My school had to be evacuated several times due to threats, over several years to the point where, we the students, never took it seriously anymore and would celebrate each time the military would barge into our classrooms and get us out of there cuz we would get the day off. Of course we were children what did we know at the time and then a day came when the school was actually attacked, so for someone who has experienced the death of childhood friends as a child myself, keep in mind the children that were killed that day ranged from ages 5 to 16 (me being in that range at that time as well) and my teachers and faculty members as well, to think that this is a one of event of the past would be very foolish. So what I am trying to say is, at no point was that my point or intention, as I mentioned, English isn’t my native language so perhaps we got lost somewhere in translation.
Oh yeah I didn't get that vibe from you. That's just the message I always try to give when talking about this. Nothing against what ya said. And yes it would haunting to be at these places. I'm polish but also american. It's always been a painful thing for me that the biggest landmarks of this was all thru Poland and at some point I plan to travel there and see these locations for myself. Some people forget that the start of the Holocaust was really the Einsatzgruppen. That took place when Germany invaded Russia as they advanced they would round up the Jewish population in Russia and burry them in mass Graves on the way to their next atrocities. These camps all over Poland were really the result of that because they were looking for a more efficient way of killing than having to use bullets which was considered a waste if you can believe that. Of the 6 million Jewish lives killed 1.5 million were in that first manor. The resources and thought they put into this is really as frightening as anything else. Never stop looking into this👍 you Honor the victims of this by exploring the truth of it and making sure it won't happen again. History doesn't repeat but it can rhyme
The girl in the red dress is based on a memory from Audrey Hepburn. When Spielberg was filming Always Hepburn told him a story of how she watched as a little Jewish girl in a red coat being loaded onto a train by the Nazis and how that memory was forever etched into her memory. This had a impact on Spielberg and he put that little girl into his film
The man removed a "mezuzah" from the door post and kissed it. the mezuzah represents the "blood of the lamb" sacrificed to God and painted on the door frames of the Israelites' enslaved in Egypt to protect them from the Plague which killed the first born in every house.

While watching this, I picked up my phone to comment that Ralph Fiennes was in this, and it was the scene where he was shaving. As soon as I grabbed my phone, you said, "Oh, he has a nose!" and looked at the camera. Of course you caught it 😂 you ravenclaws notice every damn thing! Also, I'm glad you left Adam Levys name in...I married into and divorced out of the Levy name, but my exs family say they are related, and all of the first born men have an "A" first name. I don't know if it is true, but if it is, my daughter likely wouldn't be here today without Schindler ❤️ Edit: now that I've finished watching the rest of the reaction, I can finish my comment. Yes, you do notice everything 👀 Also, Apollo 13 and Chernobyl are true stories as well 🙃🙂 you know I had to sneak that in somehow. Also again, for a lighter recommendation, the TV show The Good Place is an excellent fairly short run show (4 seasons) that is hilarious and pretty philosophical. I think you would really get into it!

The atrocities and genocide that took place during WWII should give us ALL reason to pause and reflect on how we treat one another to this very day.... There are those who make things happen,there are those who watch things happen, and there are those who wonder what just happened.... if you had to make a moral decision based on an outcome of another human life.... are you your brothers keeper?
My brother is definitely mine and I would hope he would say the same about me, I try to at least. Unfortunately many, MANY, to this day, look at others with malice and judge them, simply because they are a certain race, ethnicity, or religion. It’s quite unfortunate but it is the world we live in. It’s almost as if we learned nothing from our past.

I find it impossible to call mass murder "entertainment," though it was certainly that for many of the mass murderers. And find it impossible to "enjoy" that history. No, I haven't alternative words for those. But I can't use the words "entertainment" (that word is used in the opening credits) or "enjoy" for a film to watch when one needs a "good" cry, and an examination of one's own moral place in the world, both in the abstract and the actual. Research the "Rape of Nanking". Research the history of that written by the late Iris Chang. Research John Rabe (an equivalent of Oskar Schindler). Research what happened to Iris Chang. See if you can locate and watch the film "Iris Chang: The Rape of Nanking".
Like I mentioned, English isn’t my first language so you’ll hear me say things that you might not agree with but that is just what I know. If there is a better alternative I’m always looking to learn. Second thing to keep in mind is, at least for me, I have no prior knowledge of these movies. I’m not from the “WEST” so I didn’t grow up with these films and in this culture so I basically know nothing about it. I presume that is the case with many other reactors as well hence why they might say enjoy. That is a good point you raise though, one should keep in mind what words they use specially in sensitive cases such as these. I would however raise another point, and again maybe this is a problem with me specifically cuz of the language barrier, but to me since I do so many videos and all in one style, I kind of gotten used to saying the same words, so like saying enjoy before starting a movie, has a become a habit so most of the time I say it cuz it’s just a habit and I don’t even remember I said that. I presume that’s the case with others as well although like I said it might just be that IDK English so well so I just stick to these simple words. I’ll check out those films at a later time as I’m away currently.

Apparently the documentary is available via Amazon Prime. There is a significant number of videos on youtube about the "Rape of Nanking," some presentations by and interviews with Iris Chang. But the full documentary about Chang and her work on the history is recommended. I warn that it is devastating. Her research discovered the diary of John Rabe, a Siemens Corp. executive and Nazi who helped save many lives during the slaughter. He is an equivalent of Oskar Schindler. The diary is in print: _The Good Man of Nanking: The Diaries of John Rabe_ (NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 1998), Translated by John E. Woods. Because he had been a Nazi, and because of the denazification of Germany after the war, he couldn't find work, so he survived on "care" packages sent him by the survivors in Nanking. Iris Chang would be a victim of the massacre. There is a statue of her in Nanking.
