Were I living in South Australia, we get fires regularly. As such, nearly all farms have their own fire fighting equipment we put on our ute's (pick-up's) or trucks.

Stay Safe my friend I hate to see forest fires. I live in West Virginia and I use to be a W.V. forest fire warden. I have fought my share of them over the years .

If you can, grab a utility trailer and put a couple totes on and go to the creek and fill them. You can get a pump and all the attachments from harbor freight.

Dutch, you never know how enduring your time spent with your girls will be. My grandfather passed when I was 2 1/2 years old. I have lasting, real memories of that year. He passed on his love of the out-of-doors, flowers, whittling ( he made us whistles from, I think elderberry branches), knife skills that I in turn taught my boys. Those are treasured memories. I have checked with my siblings and these are mine alone there are other memories also. Thank you for sharing with your girls. We didn't have cell phones, just memories, and mine are sharp and clear.

The girls are doing so good in the cold water compared to dad. The girls are learning so much that they can use later in life 😀 Not every girl has the same experience as yours. With that bucket, if you leave the crawdads in the part with holes, you make sure its tied very well to the outer bucket. You toss the part with holes into the water, leave the outer part on the bank and put several rocks into it to make it heavy so it keeps the part in the water from floating away. My dad had one like this, I grew up using it when we went fishing!

Careful with the possums on the half shell. They actually carry leprosy on their claws!!!

Not opossum was armadillo. They can carry leprosy (Hansen's) & rabies. They do eat bugs, we have them in mid MO, altho most resources dont list MO, ive seen them as far North as St Louis & KC

I'm telling you I know from experience how very frightening a fire like that can be. More than 25 years ago, at our previous home, a neighbor to the west of us decided to burn trash out on the yard on a very cold, blustery (winds at 30 mph+, Westerly winds. We were sitting at our dining room table when we smelled smoke. Our son went out the door to check on the smoke, and within a few seconds was back inside yelling to me to call the fire department. Well, my husband was outside using a water hose to try to fight the fire, but I couldn't see him through the smoke, we tried to fight the fire, but it burned to within just a few feet from our house. Had it not been for the help of some of our neighbors to the east of us, our house would have burned. I called the fire department again, whereupon I was told "don't get hysterical," to which I replied, "Lady, if it were your house, you'd be hysterical too. If your fire department doesn't get here soon, our house will burn." My husband was standing less than 30 feet from me, but I couldn't see him through the smoke. It got really hairy -- our utility shed and some fence poles had some fire damage. The man who set the fire was charged -- his own daughters gave evidence to the fire investigator. You don't set a fire on the ground on a windy day, especially not winds exceeding 30+ mph! Hope no homes were lost. God bless you and yours.

Dutch I remember last year in S.C. they were warning people that armadillos coming up from Florida were carrying leprosy. I don’t think yours come from the same place but check into it. I’d hate for you or the girls to have problems from being around them.

Hope the neighbors insurance and tax evaluations are up-to-date or he’ll never be able to replace the house and possessions ; if the fire gets in. Our neighbors had 14 kids. And they had housefires twice that wiped everything out they just couldn’t catch a break.

I really think it’s awesome that you take the girls out and do a lot of the camping and outdoor cooking with them because I remember growing up my mom and dad would do that with all his kids even though the boys were in Boy Scouts and those girls were in 4-H. We still learned how to live off the land, and even now I remember a lot of it and I’ll go out and look from mushrooms and wild onions and all that good stuff it’s awesome you’re teaching the girls❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I know that many people, or perhaps all, complain about their local, state, and federal governments and view them as an invasion. There is no difference in whether the firefighters protecting these homes are employed or volunteers - most of their money, to have the equipment, clothes, etc., to do their job, comes from government grants and funding, and that is because private donations are not enough to meet their needs. This means paying taxes is important. If anyone is unhappy with how the local government values their property and assesses their taxes, then you should take that issue up with your local government. And hopefully, it will end up with you being thankful for how your tax money is being spent. Voting for those who represent what you need/want, can make a difference.

one good ting about the fire is that it will help spur new growth. But sorry it could have caused damage to structures. be careful how you approach armadillos ... they can be mean. my brother-in-law found that out. several chased him in his yard. they were bedded down under a shed in the back yard.

We camped with our 6 kids was so fun. I remember we had been by campfire with kids night before it sprinkled during night in morning their dad went out to go to bathroom and stepped on a dropped gummy worm half melted by rain and ended up with sandy gummy stuff between his toes. We laughed so hard.

Gotta keep a close eye on that Yorkie. Years ago on side of the road in Idaho sat 2 baby bears. My Yorkie decided she was awake at that time and decided to bark at them. As mom was around somewhere close we stayed in the truck and observed....mom never showed up.

Wild fires are terrifying, they can move so damn fast! Best to do control burns when the weather is suitable. ie cooler weather.
