This was the most beautiful production of "Dido and Aeneas" that I have ever seen. All the leads sang exquisitely and artistically, and the Baroque dances and stylized gestures made it so authentic. I find myself wondering if any of the gifted young singers and dancers went on to have successful careers. One last comment: the Sorceress's menagerie of followers were incredibly funny, adding a comic relief to the romance and tragedy.
No matter how u cover it up Purcell speaks to people today, to our sense of ravishing harmony and melody to our sense of ridiculousness and humor even. I wouldn't know of course, having only read one book about him and really digging that Tony Palmer movie, but in the MUSIC you can hear NOW!
If Dido knocked off the vibrato and paid more attention to intonation she'd be lovely. Indeed they could all knock off the vibrato. Instrumentalists are often encouraged to listen to singers. I think the opposite is the case.
What a great performance, with great sound - the music and singers are right at your ears (with headphones on). Amazing costumes & headpieces too. Thank you.
I saw a Barcelona production of 'Dido and Aeneas' last night on RU-vid which I praised, but with unspoken reservations. This University of Oklahoma production, however, exceeds anything I have ever seen in my life. If there is one adjective to describe this production it is "graceful". Beautifully staged, danced, and sung, as well as acted - and also true to the opera - with the pantomime of Diana and Actaeon fitting the sylvan scene like a glove. There were some comic moments, the witch and her bestial minions, with their ingenious costumes and make-up, and the Mercury on strings that funnily reminded me of JIm Carrey! Everything in the opera, from the tragic to the comic, was just the ideal temperature and the right blend, and none of it detracted from the integrity of the story. The staging of Dido's death was pure perfection and moving. Thank you for giving me such profound delight this evening,
Какое удивительное доверчиво - хрустальное, бережное и деликатное звучание голоса у главной героини! Слушаю и слушаю и не могу наслушаться. Нет никакой театральности. Все так искренне. Спасибо жа такой подарок.
Exquisite! Bravissimo to all involved. Every aspect of the Baroque fascinates. I am a pianist and harpsichordist who rarely plays other than Baroque music, and that would be Mozart.
Brilliant in every aspect - all are to be congratulated - and the producers have a true sense of history and didn't bring out beach towels and deck chairs - again hearty congratulations.
what a lovely production full of wonderful characters and performances! I was thoroughly entertained, and of course, Purcell is unrivaled so the music matched the visuals perfectly!
This is amazing. I did a production of this opera this past summer and this was The Video that I practiced with every day. It ended up pretty good but nothing can top this
It's fascinating I noticed that the headdresses of Dido and her maids, and indeed their dresses are absolutely identical to Russian folk costumes...... you can google Kichka, Kokoshnik and other traditional women's Russian folk headdresses
Merveilleux baroque. La voix de Didon est fabuleuse: quel chant du cygne! Tout ça en même pas 1 H00 avec une chorégraphie et des costumes superbes. Alors, un chef d'oeuvre, je dirais presqu'un tube!
The rest of the comments: "what Excelent production and work was put into this masterpice. This piece fills me with joy and peace whenever i hear it..." You: *FUCK YEAHH!!*
A very funny opera despite the tragic end for Dido, with witches planning to undo the lives of men, a great libretto as well as score. I found it was useful to look up the references to Greek Mythology, Aeneas being the product of a union between Aphrodite, goddess of love, and a mortal Anchises.
A fantastic production, I hope it was a masters programme, a bit of a shame about Aeneas being a rather old rough, whom a young queen is unlikely to fall in love with nor indeed be advised to.
A reasonable student production of an early baroque opera (1689 probable 1st performance) most of the voices were OK but not baroque specialist voices which causes problems with some of the content. Not an easy opera to perform well as much of it is just recacetive style rather than actual arias and therefore quite tedious to most audiences. A good attempt at an original style staging. In my opinion it needed more 'over the top' effects which would have added the wonder that baroque audiences loved.
