Valerie Masterson sings the famous ‘Czardas’ from the Strauss operetta 'Die Fledermaus'. BBC Orchestra is conducted by William Davies. This performance comes from an episode of the BBC 1 television series ‘Stuart Burrows Sings’, broadcast on 1st July 1978.
In her early days with English National Opera, Valerie excelled as the pert maid Adele, subsequently graduating to the mistress of the house, Rosalinda. In this concert performance we can hear that she makes light of all the difficulties in this piece, ending it with a thrilling high D.
What a shame that no commercial recordings were ever made of Valerie in these roles.

Valerie Masterson is in exceptional voice here. I heard her in the opera house at this time as Countess Adele in Le Comte Ory, Cleopatra in Julius Caesar and so many roles. This is just wonderful.
