Welcome to our first time watching Die Hard (1988).
Classic Action Film, but how does it stand today?
Wow, watching this from beginning to end without any distractions was totally worth it! Yes to Bruce, yes to Alan, yes to the action, and yes yes yes to the Script! Written by Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza, Directed by John McTiernan and starring Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman.
Has it dated? Not at all, the stunts are real and in-camera so they still impress, and the script is better than many modern action films - still! What a great hello for Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman. It's simple awesome.

We hope you enjoy this Reaction Video. Spoiler alert - we loved it! It is still one of the best action films ever made! Great quality filmmaking, amazing protagonist and antagonist, but also has heart - all down to the excellent script! We will leave the debate on whether it's Christmas film or not for the comments! But did anyone else spot the significance of the gold watch ? Apart from famous line, our favourite was "Listen fast. This is a party line, and the neighbour's got itchy trigger fingers."

It seems plausible that Karl could have spun out of the chain, and it appeared he was only like 10 Maybe 15 feet max off the ground. He had a hand inside the chain to help relieve some of the pressure.

GREAT REACTION! So happy when the lad said "SNAPE" and of course when he approved. He got you on SMG for sure. That was funny. This reaction reminded me of the time when my dad played PINK FLOYD for me for the first time. yes! its a Christmas movie.... because in America, from 1989- 2005 at least, every local tv station would run Die Hard and Leathal Weapon on Christmas Day. It got so popular that almost every station started to run it on Christmas so you could always drop back into it on another channel whatever the situation. There isn't an American over 40 that hasn't been to a family Holiday at someones house where if you walked down into their basement, you would find a few cousins and uncles huddled around the tv watching this while trying to avoid the family. I cant wait for the next two:) Looking forward to an eventual LEATHAL WEAPON, that leads into MAD MAX, that leads into BRAVEHEART!

What do you mean the significance of the gold watch? That it was the reason for the snag, and that it almost got her killed?
@GenerationMediaReaction
@GenerationMediaReaction 2 месяца назад
@@oaktree1628 As well as the objective arc which for John is to stop the terrorists, he has the subjective arc which is his marital problem. This is why he is in LA to begin with. Holly is using her maiden name and came to LA for the work opportunity and placed this as a higher priority than their marriage. Near the beginning, Ellis says to John that Holly should show him her watch, being gold and Rolex as a token of her working for the company. At the end, Hans dangles for his life holding onto her by the wrist. John unshackles the watch and Hans falls. In this one action, he completes his objective in stopping the terrorists and also he solves his original problem of his marriage with symbolism as he unshackles his wife from the company, because she says she is now Holly 'McClane'.

@Joanna.From.Canada Depends on how narrow minded somebody is when it comes to assessing the merits of a film regarding the genre its made for. It's widely accepted that Die Hard is a christmas movie except for a small number of people who seem to cling to the belief that christmas movies have to have a rigid formula.
@paulockenden4278
@paulockenden4278 2 месяца назад
@Joanna.From.Canada and that's exactly what I was just saying. If you are only going to accept the rigid formula then you won't accept its a Christmas movie. There are actually far more references to christmas in Die Hard than there are in Its a wonderful life , and that film references suicide !!

"Welcome to the party, pal!" It isn't Christmas in my house until Hans Gruber is THROWN off the top of Nakatomi Plaza. 😎 Fun Fact: In 2007, Bruce Willis donated John McClane's undershirt to the Smithsonian Museum. Making Lemonade Fact: The scene where McClane (Bruce Willis) falls down a shaft was a mistake by the stuntman, who was supposed to grab the first vent, as it originally was planned. He slipped and continued to fall, but the shot was used anyway; it was edited together with one where McClane grabs the next vent down as he falls. When Worlds Collide Fact: The scene in which Gruber (Alan Rickman) and McClane (Bruce Willis) meet for the first time was inserted into the script after Alan Rickman was found to be proficient at mimicking American accents. The filmmakers had been looking for a way to have the two characters meet prior to the climax and capitalized on Rickman's talent. Casting Notes Fact: Alan Rickman nearly passed up the role of Hans Gruber, which ended up being his first American film role. He had only arrived in Hollywood two days earlier and was appalled by the idea of his first role being the villain in an action film. To a degree, Rickman was right to be concerned considering his performance as Hans Gruber was so hailed that the actor had to struggle being typecast as a player of villains for much of his career. Location Location Fact: The fictional Nakatomi Plaza is the headquarters of 20th Century Studios, so the studio could use one of its own buildings and didn't have to hold back on stunts and action sequences. While Jeb Stuart was writing the screenplay, he did a tour of the building, and immediately incorporated some of the locations and objects he found there into his script as set pieces. The company charged itself rent for the use of the then-unfinished building. Some of the middle floors were occupied by legal and administrative departments, so only empty floors were used for filming. Still, the filming of scenes that involved gunfire had to be postponed until after hours because some of the employees from the active floors started to complain about the noise.

@matttyree1002

55:39 Fun fact: The face that Alan Rickman is making when he falls is genuine. In the studio they had the blue screen equipment all set up, and Alan was hanging off the scaffold they set up for this shot, but he was really scared of heights and very nervous, and the director told him that they would pretend to drop him, and then get the shot of the fall with a stunt man, but they actually dropped him without telling him, so that's Alan thinking that something went wrong in real life and that he was really in danger. Of course they were over foam mats so he was fine, but he was still not expecting to really be dropped XD Great reaction, as always guys!

Just a suggestion. The movie Searching for Bobby Fisher. It's a fantastic film that unfortunately came out the same year as Jurassic Park, The Fugitive, The Firm, Sleepless in Seattle and Mrs Doubtfire. All big blockbuster movies so it was overshadowed and not noticed or given the attention it truly deserves. It's based on a true story and is a great example of redemption and true parental love. It's stars Ben Kingsley, and Laurence Fishbern. Along with other great actors especially the young boy who plays the real life character Josh Waitzkin , ( Max Pomeranc) who truly knocks it out of the park with his fantastic acting abilities . It's interesting as i was genuinely confused by this shooting. Had a look back, and when the body lands, and he reverses the car, there is gunfire immediately and the camera doesn't show who is firing. You're right, it must be the terrorists (later a shot shows it coming from a lower level), but in the moment, and since John was leading the action, it created a question in us.

22:20 It wasn't John shooting at him, I at one point in my life thought so too. But no, the thieves were shooting at him because now he knew something was up and they tried shooting him to prevent him from saying anything about it to anyone. And even though I thought the same thing once, John shooting at him would of been really risky, could of actually hit him, those bullets were close. You can see a thief with a gun was on a lower floor than most and was shooting at him, way lower than John was.

The SMG in question is a H&K MP5 when he has to sacrifice the gun he should’ve taken the magazine with the ammunition with him as well. the MP5 and the Beretta that he kept with him use the same ammunition

Great Classic Action film! When your lad didn’t recognize Alan Rickman’s name my initial thought was “didn’t he watch Harry Potter?” 😂 He’s right can’t mistake that voice. I used to work at Nagatomi Building a.k.a Fox Plaza part of 21st Century Fox Studios. Whenever I see this movie I have flashbacks of my time there. lol Rupert Murdoch used to come in on a helicopter and land on the roof of the building when he came into town. Glad your son enjoyed it.

You guys should watch Die Hard 3 next. It's from the same director and it's just about as good as the original.
