A playthrough of Activision's 1992 license-based action/adventure game for the NES, Die Hard.
For a full write-up on the game, be sure to check out my review here: www.nintendocomplete.com/die-hard
I played the game on the Advanced difficulty level. This video shows the best ending.
The Die Hard game was one of the better NES games to be based on a license - and probably the best one that wasn't made by Capcom or Konami. It closely follows the plot of the original movie (which was four years old already when the game was released) - you play as Bruce Willis's leading man John McClane, an off-duty out-of-town cop, who finds himself at LA's Nakatomi Plaza tower in the midst of a terrorist lockdown. His wife and several other employees are being held hostage, and John has to foil the criminal plot and save the day.
You get the free run of several floors of the tower, and you have to wipe out all of the bad guys as you perform tasks that trigger major events from the movie. You have to find a radio, get to the roof and call for help, steal the detonators, smash the building's mainframe computer, all while arming yourself to the teeth and looking after your "foot health" as you work your way closer and closer to the final showdown with Professor Snape.... err... I mean Hans Gruber.
The number of moments that directly reflect the film's plot is surprising - fairly often cutscenes using digitized photos pop-up letting you know what is going on, and the majority of them represent key moments from the movie. Alan Rickman screams at his henchman for being idiots, Carl Winslow from Family Matters (Reginald VelJohnson) gets to reprise his role as do-gooder with a chance at salvation, Theo regularly announces how many of the vault's locks he has managed to bore through. It's all quite nicely done.
There is a ton of detail in the graphics. Sure, they're pretty horrendously ugly (the perspective and the color choices really leave a lot to be desired), but they're clear and well defined at least. The music is quite good, and the controls are generally responsive, though lining up angles can be a bit of a challenge at times. It's quite a difficult game, but a lot of the fun in playing it comes from figuring out what to do and when. There are several different endings you may see depending on your choices throughout, and there is a lot of flexibility in how you approach most situations.
So Die Hard might not be a Christmas movie as much as it is an action movie, but I don't care. I always watch it at Christmas, and the first two movies take place during Christmas, so I figured that this was an appropriate time to upload this one.
Happy trails, happy holidays, and Yippie-Ki-Yay, insert expletive for someone who would like to copulate in accordance with their Oedipal desires

If you've ever thought that video games should include health meters for your feet, or that more games would benefit from the inclusion of Carl Winslow from Family Matters, you'll find a great deal to appreciate here. Yippie-ki-yay, and happy holidays, mofos! :)

Funny story, I had a Ms.Doubtfire VHS tape that didn't work. I then try to get the name off with sandpaper, but I then realize it was a sticker. I washed the sticker off, but it actually had Die Hard on it. I wasn't sure what that was, but I then saw this video and now I understand what this is!🤣

You know I wonder if him being a cop in Die Hard is what got him the role on Family Matters!

I like how when any game is in top-down perspective and involves action, people always think of that game.

I like how, if you've seen the movie, it's actually possible to do or remember some of the stuff you saw in it and use that knowledge to your advantage in the game. For example, going to the roof with a radio early on gets you Al's help, going into the vents will cost you your machine gun if you have one, the goons have the sense to shoot the vents if they have reason to believe you're in them, you REALLY don't want to set off a brick of C4 in the floor just below the roof, a few rooms have similar layouts to the movie, and you know EXACTLY what those weird-looking tiles on the ground are as soon as you see them get layered over normal flooring. And I ALSO like how you can use that same knowledge to deviate from the movie's plot. Most notably, nothing forces you to drop the detonators and keeping them screws over Hans' plan for the hostages (and allows you to safely ignore the situation with the helicopter on the roof), and it actually gets you a better ending if you do so, nothing MAKES you call for help on the roof, and if you please, just take the express elevator to gun down the guys who were firing rockets at the ol' SWAT RV and use their launcher to your own benefit. I really liked this game. It's quite ahead of its time with how open-ended it was and how it just let you go about achieving your objectives - or if you even wanted to bother - however you please, as long as you took out all 40 enemies present in the game within the time limit (and goodness help you if you didn't take too many out before the final four minutes because they'd ALL be coming to say hi once you're on the 30th floor). It's almost like a small open world meets a battle royale game, and as you learn the ins and outs of the Nakatomi Building and how you can use it to your benefit, you get better and better at it.
@wowalamoiz9489

Almost a masterpiece. The graphics are mediocre, though, the fighting music stops too quickly when the enemies are out of range, and the game could use a bit of polish here and there.
@YukaTakeuchiFan
@YukaTakeuchiFan Год назад
@@wowalamoiz9489 Indeed, the game is a bit rough around the edges, but I don't think anything you mention would've been too difficult to make just that little bit better. I think if these guys, or someone else, ever got a shot at making another game like this with newer tech, it'd be amazing stuff all around.

Hans: Idiots! He's listening, don't use the radio! Also Hans: Need helicopter for the hostages on the roof. Good one Hans.

I admit I like watching Die Hard at Christmas as well. I find it coincidental this playthrough went up because Die Hard recently was selected for preservation for the National Film Registry.

Didn't knew it's possible to take a shortcut from the roof to the 30th floor. I thought you can do that only when helicopter is attacking you while the roof is gonna explode like in the movie if you don't have detonators.

I like it how Nintendo was against religious symbols, yet the crosses on the Christmas trees were fine. :D I bought the japanese version of this, as the USA one is very expensive. I always liked this game, unique things like a field of view, the multiple endings, it was well done. Much more enjoyable than Dirty Harry or Mad Max that's for sure. It keeps on the edge until the end, whenever it's a game over, or a completed game.

Haven't played the game in 30 years. I remember once I finished it without calling the police. I just took out all the terrorists. I got the retro Nintendo with like 1000 plus games and Die Hard is one of them. Going to attempt to play it after 30 years, I'm sure I'll get killed by the first terrorist I see hahaha. Hand eye coordination not as good as it once was.
