Welcome to our first-time reaction to Die Hard With A Vengeance (1995). This cinematic rollercoaster with Bruce Willis reprising his iconic role as John McClane, alongside the charismatic Samuel L. Jackson was phenomenal! The movie has a lot to love! Explosive action, dynamic duo dynamics, and intense storytelling that is characteristic of the Die Hard series.
"Die Hard With A Vengeance" sees McClane and his unlikely partner, Zeus Carver (Samuel L. Jackson), tackling a series of deadly puzzles set by the enigmatic Simon Gruber (Jeremy Irons). This film is filled with high-octane sequences and some witty banter between Willis and Jackson that make this one of our favorites in the series thus far!
We hope you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussions as we explore this iconic action film.
So let's navigate the streets of New York, face off against Simon Gruber, and immerse ourselves in the adrenaline-fueled excitement of this John McTiernan-directed blockbuster!

Fun fact about this movie; the director was actually investigated by the FBI. The plan Simon uses would have actually succeeded in real life, and the fbi wanted to know how the director knew. He used publicly available records that ANYONE could have researched. Because of this movie, they upped security.

Came here to say all of this. Fucking epic. It would have been such a shame to have this heist planned out in a lesser movie, I'm so glad it was used so well for such a phenomenal movie with the right talent in all the right places (acting, dialog, cinematography, sound, etc.)

@newspooiechannel
@newspooiechannel 6 месяцев назад
It wasn't actually the director, but the writer, Jonathan Hensleigh. He was investigated with regard to the layout of the Federal Reserve building, the vault's placement and how it was being guarded, since it matched the actual layout and process of the building. The information he used was from a news article that was originally published in a magazine. On that note... John McTiernan, the director (and director of the original film) later went to jail for illegal wiretapping, perjury and lying to the FBI.

@@CYB3R2K The second movie feels more out of place in the series. While it's a good movie, Die Hard 2 is just the weakest of the bunch. Hans and Simon are 2 of the truly iconic movie badguys in movie history. It being a more elaborate heist ties in with the first. And 4 and 5 following the same trend as 3 makes me question if you know the series.

Best one in the series, the chemistry between Sam and Bruce is a once in a generation collaboration. Fun fact. The writer of this film, Jonathan Hensleigh, also wrote Jumanji and Armageddon. Two other great 90's films. He also directed the criminally underrated super hero film The Punisher with Thomas Jane in 2004 which was way before its time. Real talk, one of my favorite understated elements about this film is that all of John's team were competent and had GOATED moments. Whether it's the two that run into the building to help the kids stuck thinking A BOMB WAS GONNA GO OFF or the bomb homie not bailing when he hears that there's still kids stuck inside or even the sheer fact that the captain was not the stereotypical red taping dick... it's such a cool little detail that shows that John may have picked adopted this courageous behavior or inspires this amongst his colleagues.

It is crazy to think this is mostly practical and on location for $90million. If this was made now it would look terrible, cost $300 million, have poor CGI 'everything' and, more importantly, would have terrible writing and unlikeable characters. The most unrealistic part are the bobcats that carry the gold. That amount of gold per bucket would weigh at least 6,000lb, more than the capacity than any skid steer loader can handle. Not to mention the trucks which usually carry only about 30,000lb. That would equate to a cube of gold only 3ft wide.

A small bit of trivia on this movie: the script for this actually started as a Lethal Weapon movie script and was retooled to fit a Die Hard film. That's why Sam Jackson was cast as an older black partner for John McLane in this one.

For my money this is the second best in the series. I rank them 1-3-4-2. The fifth one does not exist. I do not acknowledge it. Fun fact that I didn't see mentioned...that signboard he was wearing in Harlem was blank while filming, the text was added in post. It was a good move imo, as even if taken in context of the film it's unnecessary to parade that in public.

I just realized the "smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo"was also said by Bruce in Pulp Fiction. It's a quote from the song Flowers On The Wall by the Statler Brothers, from 1967.

5:08 They were there, on location in Harlem, on the day to shoot, and somebody on the production team suggested they should use a blank sign and digitally insert the text because wearing the actual sign could lead to Bruce Willis getting murdered. Computer animation was still very expensive at this time, so that could lead to a budgeting issue. The director called the producer who called the studio head, and within twenty minutes they had been authorized to digitally insert text onto a blank sandwich board.

Fun fact: this was an original spec script by writer Jonathan Hensleigh called "Simon Says", that Fox purchased off him for an at-the-time incredibly high price, got to some basic re-writing and Bob's your uncle - Die Hard 3! Hensleigh wrote a few more scripts, but the recognition from this little piece of business is what landed him his directorial debut with the 2004 Thomas Jane version of The Punisher.

Random observation: when John says he's been, "smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo" it's a quote from a song by The Statler Brothers: "Counting Flowers on the Wall". "Counting flowers on the wall doesn't bother me at all. Playing Solitaire til dawn with a deck of 51. Smoking cigarettes and watchin' Captain Kangaroo, now don't tell meeee - I've nothin' to doooo" Love that song!

For those that miss it/not get it: Fill the [3L] & tip it into the [5L] = 3L/5L & 0L/3L. Refill the [3L] & then use it to fill the [5L] = 5L/5L & 1L/3L. Empty the [5L], put the 1L from the [3L] into it = 1L/5L & 0L/3L. Refill the [3L] & add it to the 1L in the [5L] = 4L.

The original film treatment was called Simon Says, and the Zeus character was supposed to be female. When the script was rewritten, Laurence Fishburne was tagged to play Zeus. Ironically, Fishburne turned down the chance (on the advice of his agent) to play Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction, which went to Jackson. Supposedly, while Fishburne was negotiating to receive a bigger paycheck to play Zeus, one of the producers attended the Pulp Fiction premiere and decided Jackson would be a much better fit to play the character.

There's an alternate ending that they fully shot but decided not to use as it would have changed the whole tone of the movie and McClane more specifically. It's a cool ending and it would have replaced the entire part in Canada. You can find it here on YT. Great channel!

Nice touch at 11:11 Mclane says smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo, which is a line from Flowers on the Wall which was paying in Bruce Willis' car in Pulp Fiction a couple of films before this was made.

*_Die Hard 3 is the absolute BEST Die Hard of them all: Having Hans’ brother as the vilain (Brilliantly played by academy award winner Jeremy Iron to boot) instead of some random terrorist and the addition of the OG MoFo, Sam Jackson, to the cast is unequalled in the franchise! (And it is refreshing that McLane’s boss, while well aware of John’s flaws, is not one of those Police sergeants who just yells at McLane throughout the whole movie and becomes an obstacle to the hero cop solving the problem._* *_While personally, I like part 4 also, it was just too difficult for them to best part 3. My ranking of the first 4 Die Hard goes:_* *1st: Die Hard 3* *2nd: Die Hard 1* *3rd: Die Hard 4* *4th: Die Hard 2* *_Beyond that though, I never watched Die Hard 5 as the very premise of the movie seemed just too dumb to be worth the time (so I might be ignorantly wrong, but I’d rather be that than proven right!)_*

RIP Anthony Peck, who plays Det. Ricky Walsh (Badge 6991) in DH3. He played an LAPD cop in DH1 too (think dabbing gauze on Al’s forehead and other scenes). He was in several John McTiernan films, including The Hunt For Red October and Last Action Hero. He died of cancer the year after this film was released. 🙏🏻

Fun fact... This was originally written as a spec script that Jonathan Hensleigh tried to sell called "Simon Says." After a few studios took an interest in it, Fox bought the script and had him re-write the main character as John McClane, add in the sub plot of Simon being Hans Gruber's brother and the part about him and Holly being separated to explain her absence. In the original version of the film, the two main villain gets away and then McClane ends up tracking them down in Hungary several months later and forces him to play a game of Russian Roulette with a rocket launcher using his own riddles against him. The execs at Fox felt both that McClane was being too cruel and didn't like that the day abruptly ended and picked up almost a year later for one last scene and little action, so it was re-written and the actors came back to shoot the helicopter sequence. Jonathan Hensleigh would also later go on to co-write and direct the very underrated 2004 Punisher film.

I think that an interesting part of it was that John proved himself again and again, in addition to making John interesting to Simon, it raised the quality of Hans' defeat. John was not actually the so-called generic irish cop. But rather a demonstrably resourceful, witty, and lucky character. It both makes John more interesting and Hans even more badass, as it required someone amazing as John McClain to bring Hans down.
