Hans Hotter as Wotan, Wolfgang Windgassen as Siegmund and Siegfried, Josef Greindl as Hunding, Gre Brouwenstijn as Sieglinde, and Astrid Varnay as Brünnhilde. With the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Hans Knappertsbusch (1956).

I’m not sure what you base that on, other than his reputation. In this performance of Act I, he is constantly behind the singers. It’s almost unbelievable.

@@wotan10950 There may be a live recording problem...I listened while looking at score, and orchestra and stage are aligned. Think what you want. Hi.

@@ritapapiri So is it a “live recording problem,” or is it that you think the conductor is right with the singers? Or both? Or none of your options? As you can see, I couldn’t care less, and I’m sure you don’t care what I think either. Ciao 😉

@@wotan10950 dear wotan 10950...try solfeggio or singing it. Kna is right and the third act is musically superb. Ciao.

@@wotan10950 Brouwenstijn gets completely out in the beginning of Männer Sippe. It sounds like she either could not hear the orchestra or wasnt watching his beat. Windgassen comes in too early at 47:10 and what follows is a mess - not only rhythmically but he sounds like he doesnt know what key he was supposed to be in - when singers make mistakes like that one doesnt talk about the conductor being "behind". He has his tempi - and they must follow. That is the way it was. During this period in opera there was the law of the jungle - the alpha male dictated. Knappertsbusch was known for his slower tempi - the singers were obviously having problems adapting. Maybe there was a lack of rehearsal time - who knows

For fun, I listened first to Der Manner Sippe. I don’t think “The Great Kna” was together with the singers all through to the of Act I.
