The Battle of Dien Bien Phu (March 13 - May 7, 1954) was the decisive Vietnamese victory that brought an end to French colonial rule in Vietnam. After the battle, the country was partitioned into North and South Vietnam, creating the political framework for continued conflict in the Vietnam War, and ultimately the reunification of North and South in 1975.
The 70th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Dien Bien Phu was 7 May, and so we decided here on Ulysses Files to mark this significant day with a short summary of the battle.
ULYSSES FILES is a RU-vid channel dedicated to showcasing primarily military history content (plus certain other topics) in short documentary form, featuring interesting and quirky characters and stories from the late 19th Century on through the 1st and 2nd World Wars to the present.
It is not always possible to find 100% accurate footage to illustrate these cinematic short films, but where possible ULYSSES FILES strives to keep it authentic. Background music will always attempt to provide appropriate emotional mood.
Topics and content are thoroughly researched and portrayed in their historical context for both educational and entertainment purposes. We try our best to be accurate in terms of the data in our short films, but are not experts in all areas and are always learning new things, so if we get something wrong - please feel free to contact us. Also if you have an idea you believe may fit the scope of our channel - again - do not hesitate to let us know.

in Vietnam today, they just had a big 70 years remembrance with the presence of the France defense minister Sébastien Lecornu and france secretary of state. this defeat shook the French so bad, when the news came, The Archbishop of Paris ordered a mass, radio performances were replaced with solemn music and all entertainment activities were halted to show respect.

@@UlyssesFiles the parade is in Dien Bien Phu but its pretty boring if you looking for some military equipment show off, it mostly showing how the people are a in solitary with the military with ethnic women fighters and guerilla vietcong women fighters and many other women fighter group, the message is like how we say it here "GIẶC ĐẾN NHÀ ĐÀN BÀ CŨNG ĐÁNH" when the enemy comes the women fight too. the france allowed vietnam state's journalists to take pictures and classified document about the battle from the french perspective and its consequences to make a documentary but its in vietnamese but if you interested heres the link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5ODYUerrQ88.html

the battle also inspired many france colonies in Africa to rise up against their masters, many streets in those countries named after Ho Chi Minh. France also sent Morocco colonial soldiers to Vietnam and many of them fled and joined the Vietminh to fought against the French

Yes v true. We are researching a Greek member of the French Foreign Legion who deserted the Legion to join the Việt Mình in 1946 and fought with them thru the 50s.

I have visited the battlefield and it's a excellent the mountain encampment of the Vietnamese. It's all described in English and Vietnamese. On my return to my hotel a French lad was complaining that nothing was in French, I replied winner's write what they choose

France’s most decorated soldier Marcel ‘Bruno’ Bigeard also fought in this battle. His story is one that you have to cover on this channel as its a wild one.

A mate of mine (an Aussie like me) is an 'amateur' military historian and flew over to Vietnam last week to be in Dien Bien Phu where he is meeting up with his French girlfriend. I have the impression it is a really big deal for the Vietnamese and French, even to this day.

Ah that’s cool - I want to visit the battleground too, soon. I was in Hanoi recently and Đà Nẵng. Yep the Vietnamese take their recent history v seriously, I guess the French do too 👍🏻🍻
