When 108 Aussie Diggers Took On 2500 Viet Cong | ANZAC Stand at Long Tan, Vietnam

Afternoon of 18 August 1966: The Australian soldiers in 11 platoon begin to infiltrate deeper eastwards into the Long Tân rubber plantation, spreading out in sections as they move ahead of the rest of D Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. Tasked with searching for signs of Viet Cong activity in the vicinity, rock n roll music from a concert taking place at their nearby base occasionally wafts through the trees - painting something of a surreal atmosphere as the diggers silently move through the tropical landscape.
A twig snaps, a bush rustles and suddenly they make first contact with the enemy as a squad of Viet Cong - unaware of their presence - blunders right into them. Platoon Sergeant Bob Buick is first to react and fires - wounding a VC - before they disappear into the surrounding lush vegetation of the plantation.

@@UlyssesFiles Good research would be the Australian SASR most feared of all in Vietnam and VC nicknamed them the Phantoms of the jungles or Ma Rung. they trained MACV GROM and were members of it also. Reading some of their missions and see why named Phantoms. awesome stories. A SASR squad were out on patrol that night of this battle and heard it from a distance and few days after found the camp they think the VC set up afterwards. found over 30 fresh graves and signs of medical treatment who they think were from this battle.

I did officer training in the Australian Army. This is the first battle we studied in our curriculum. Emphasised individual soldier skills and discipline as the key to punching above our weight. These young soldiers did an amazing job. Thanks for telling their story.

The section of Australian soldiers on the far right was pretty much wiped out during the initial contact, I think 10 or 11 killed outright. During cleanup the next day most of those soldiers were found dead, in the prone firing position with weapons pointed toward the enemy, fingers on triggers. It's a testament to the high standards of discipline the men were expected to maintain. Very brave young men. @@UlyssesFiles

New Zealand soldiers were not there. They provided artillery support from the rear only. !the title of this video ANZAC stand at Long Tan is disingenuous

@@bradwaghorn8955 This is correct , however without the incredible accuracy of the NZ Artillery laying down rounds just in front of the Australian lines , our troops most likely would have been massacred. It was a joint effort .

Great coverage thanks for the video! Also I really liked your acknowledgment at the end of “The enemy” & their courageous fight. I think that doesn’t get expressed enough in videos like this, respect for the opponents. I think 99.9% of ANZAC Veterans (if I may be so bold to say) would agree.? Very close friends of mine served at in the NZ army at Nui Dat circa 1968 - 1970 (After Lon Tan of course) I’ve been there to Long Tan & the Nui Dat base as a person from the next generation & it’s very moving. Wars will always happen but I propose that politicians that advocate a war, lead the charge or send their families with the armed forces who are involved then we will see their true commitment, no?

a couple of years after the withdrawal I was talking to a one eyed one armed NVA Colonel in Hanoi who told me they regarded the Australians as the Ghurkas of the U.S. forces. He had no grudges against the West and was quite regretful that the war had been fought. he was also very condemnatory about the quality of Russian supplied transport compared to captured American equipment. It was Quite a compliment according to him as they greatly admired the Ghurkas.

there is now a movie about the fight which according to a vietnam vet I know is pretty accurate. It also painted some of the RAAF officers present as less than honourable. Danger close: the battle of Long Tan

Saw a comment on one of these stories about the battle and guy said he married the daughter to the Aussie commander of this unit and he said from his father in laws stories it was pretty accurate also.

The Australians were not interested in body counts as the Americans were so when the Australian newspapers deadline for the next days publishing was reached they had only counted the 250 dead enemy so once that newspaper report was done the Aussies stopped counting. Captured enemy records later showed just over 800 killed.
