That whole thing about the rear thrusters and the overhang was quite interesting. It would have been cool to see railroad rolling stock as transformable bases of some sort. As if they become make shift semi building blocks.
11:28 The siege blaster feels like more of a reference to the silly length of the original and not the shape. (Because all the accessories combine together.) It is cooler in my opinion to have a slew of different weapons/guns combine into a giant death canon than to just have a detailed hunk of plastic. Gives it more playability.
Astrotrain is actually my first vintage G1 Decepticon, all he was missing was most of his stickers, (except for the Decepticon symbols). In the 3-or-so years since I found at the Rouge Toys in Oregon, he has taken some more damage than he already had, such a stress marks on the leading wheels after I dropped him on the concrete driveway, a pin holding one of the purple leg flaps periodically slides out, a crack in his left shoulder, and one of the tabs that held his thruster-cab in alt modes breaking off. But twelve-year-old me loved him then and fifteen-year-old me loves him now. :)
6:22 Siege Astrotrain isn't perfect, but it's our best non-MP Astrotrain we have ever gotten. The weapons plug into the back half of shuttle mode and make it look a lot better.
2:06 Something weird that the animation model for Astrotrain does is it depicts him as having central, double-sided cylinders; that is, the cylinders are set in the middle of the driving wheels, and pistons extend from either side of them, powering 4 driving wheels each. (1:34; if you go back and watch any of the shots depicting Astrotrain moving in train mode, you'll see that the piston rods move up and down at the ends, but stay at the same level in the middle, where the vertical purple piece is, indicating it's the cylinder.) Of course, this is pretty much impossible in the real world, and no such steam locomotive exists. It's pretty much because the character model artists confused that big hinge on the original toy between the front and back driving wheels as the cylinder. Interestingly, the Siege/Earthrise Astrotrain toy kinda homages this by having cylinders in the front *and* in the middle (as indicated by how there's multiple sets of piston rods, with the back set sorta just ending in the middle of the train mode). This seemingly implies that the Siege/Earthrise toy is a weird, non-existent, 2-4-4-2 locomotive. Now, none of this really matters in the whole D51/D62 discussion. It's just something I noticed, and have always found interesting as yet another weird animation error that originates from the G1 cartoon.
2-4-4-2s did exist, but they were never all that practical. If I had to guess, I'd say the Siege/Earthrise designers just took random design ques from a variety of locomotives from a number of eras.
@@barelymediocrestudios9404 True, yeah, 2-4-4-2s did exist; I meant more that whatever specific 2-4-4-2 locomotive that Astrotrain is doesn't exist. Also, agree with the second point, there are so many greebly details on that toy that are just "Oh yeah, that's train stuff, right? Pipes and what not?"
I was able to get my hands on a 100% complete vintage Thundercracker for a very decent price and I find the original G1 seeker mold to be nearly flawless.
Siege Astrotrain's *combined* gun is more or less the equivalent of the BFG of previous iterations of Astrotrain. It's his schtick, similar to Blitzwing's phallic lookin' sword. (Though Animated Blitzwing seems to not include it)
I wish the G1 cartoon depicted Astrotrain as a similar size class to Skyfire. It would have been fitting as Skyfire was basically capable of troop transport as well.
OK that season 1-season 2 seeker bit highlighted something so bizarre: G1 Starscream and ER Starscream have vehicle modes which are about the same size but at the same time, G1 Starscream's robot mode is about the size of a Classics seeker
I recently found a complete g2 Starscream for like 50 bucks, one of the pegs from a back wings is broken though. Was really surprised at how big this plane is
Astrotrain never skipped out on arm day at the gym and boy oh boy does it ever show!!! Look at those huge, glistening, biceps! Those long, strong, forearm muscles all the way down to the fingers. Man, he's a friggin' tank! And I bet it's barely an effort for him to touch his toes
Just a note... the train mode actually DOESN'T need to be purple. There's actually a repaint of the figure in more real world colors that doesn't use the purple at all. Rather there are parts on the shuttle mode that appear in train mode but since NASA shuttles tend to be while and black anyway the black parts of the shuttle just blend into the train. It's a rather genius color change between modes and I love that version of the figure. I wish I had picked it up when I had the chance but the weird robot mode kind of turned me off at the time. The more I look at the figure though it's actually one of my favorite triple changers of that era, especially when its done in the more real world colors.
3:00 in actuality, MP 52 Starscream was licensed by Boeing, making it an official F-15 vehicle mode. Given that this video was made 2 years ago, you probably figured that out long before I said so.
Had to rewatch this video as hasbro revealed a reissue of the star scream mold for skywarp and I preordered it because of how I love the og toys I have bumblebee and had prime all I really want now is jazz as that’s my favorite mold besides prime
Apperently Mp-52 Starscream is licensed (according to tfw2005 members) and the reason the toys look so different from the show is because the artist only got small blurry images or what the g1 characters were supposed to look like.
I have one of these two. Astrotrain. Very reasonable to acquire a good conditioned one complete. Starscream......nightmare. Have not gotten a hold of him. But got the other two seekers with him a couple weeks ago. Actually like Skywarp a lot better (Color scheme)
The Starscream looks like a KO for me. They don't have the pre-applied stickers on the top of the intake. To look better in jet mode, I sanded the wings connectors a little bit, and now the wings are more integrated in jet mode.
Gonna be completely honest, I never had much of a problem with G1 Astrotrain's toy. I mean those arms, THOSE ARMS, they were fine. I didn't care for them much. They were just kinda... ...THERE for me. I did give it to my cousin's son and he seems to like it a lot.
I wonder what the original Diaclone designers think about what's been done to their creations in recent years... 12:24 - Head goes up, head goes down. Head goes up, head goes down. Head goes up, head goes down.
Hahahaha As for the diaclone designers, i wonder if when designing if they were just expecting it to be the in thing for a while and then move on like everything else, then 40 years later, here we are still talking about them. Must be surreal
Crap! Starscream is missing his blue fists. One thing I hated about G1 transformers. That had removable fists that where super easy to lose especially trailbreaker they where spring loaded and always got lost. Great review though I try to never miss a video.
You can tell a reissue on the markings if it has a blank oval before 1984 its a reissue a original will have 1974-1984 i was taken for a reissue g1 preceptor. Thank the lord i only needed it for parts, love the vids i also am a train enthusiast
The cockpit detail becoming a part of the helmet on Starscream is something that really intrigues me. The position of the nose cone on the back is something I’m glad they improved on. I think the nose being parallel to the torso looks better. I’m not as bothered by the nose cone as I am the wings. I am so glad the animation model had them much higher up. I think they look a bit weird that low.
@@zilvertron i knew behind the scenes the designer said an F15 would never be these colours, thus the realistic green, i just don't remember seeing any sprt of licensing on the box
How do those stop motion intro/outros keep looking cleaner and cleaner? Is he tweaking them beyond perfection or am I just appreciating more frames each time?
who wouldn't subscribe I mean how many transformers reviewers do stopmosion most of the time they know what veical it is and if they see it fit custom 3d print and paint the figures seriously who wouldn't sub- ps Lazy Eyebrow I know that your probably not going to see this comment but thanks for the amazing videos my nephew mars past away October 27th one day before he would have turned 6 mouths old thank you for helping me though this hard time
Are these the original toys of Starscream and Astrotrain from the 80s or are these reissues? Been thinking of getting back into collecting Transformers recently and Astrotrain seems like a good place to start.
They're HO Scale (1:87, not 1:64) and i went out and bought the vehicle modes and painted them in their various schemes (or in this case, a guy named Robert Dahne did the stunticons for me)
I never realized how weird Starscream was, I always viewed it as one of the better G1 figures. And Astrotrain! What?! When did that look so weird? I love the way these look, they have some charm, they were never ment to be perfect. But its so bizarre to see where everything came from.
@@TheLazyEyebrow i respectfully disagree at least on the shuttle mode, sure siege is clunky but theres something about g1 astrotrains shuttle that feels almost unfinished imo
@@JohnDoe-wl5xm i personally am unsure how you see siege and don't think that about the shuttle, especially the more to the rear you look, but hey, whatever's keeping you going
