So many critics! It is laughable. Dietrich "mediocre" and Richter the "wrecker"?? Wondering how many among you have actually performed? Get over yourselves already. Again... Es ist zum lachen. The. End.
Fischer-dieskau is THE master of the lied. His legato, his phrasing, his colouring of words, his musical imagination....it's never been done better or equally good. Pure musical genius and a perfect mastery of his instrument!
Fisher Dieskau - the greatest baritone of the 20th century - and Sviatislav Richter - arguably the greatest pianist of the 20th century. That the greatest pianist accompanies the greatest baritone in this famous lied demonstrates how essential the piano part is to German lieder. Many distinguished pianists with independent careers have accompanied lieder in recordings.
whenever i feel sad or a bit melancholic, i watch this video and it makes me smile. Those two musicians were meant to play together, this sound, this sound... replay button>
This performance is heavenly. But I gotta say, it's not "DF-D sings im Frühling", it's "Richter plays ..." I wish the camera spent more time on the singer, so we could see the emotions expressed in his face.
I assume it was a rehearsal for the recitals at the Grand Théâtre in Tours, part of Richter's Grange de Meslay festival. I was fortunate to attend two of those wonderful and unforgettable concerts. What a pleasure to see the rehearsals today.
A great document, though I wish the filmmaker had shown more of FD in this clip so we could see him tell the story of the song from beginning to end. Richter makes a wonderful contribution, but who cares about watching him read his music--at least show his hands if you're going to do that.
@dorje1975 I think the statement is not an especially correct one. DFD's voice certainly lacks power, and in opera this is often painfully obvious, but he has a fine and hardly mistakable timbre. His technique is impeccable and I am not sure it can be separated from the voice. After all, power is not the most important thing for a singer, especially a Lieder specialist.
Forever the master of German Lieder. Thank you for your art Dietrich. For those who may not know D.F-D also wrote a book of translations (almost literal) of hundreds of German Lied - a must for singers and teachers.
This lied, Im Fruhling, casts an ineffable spell over me since I heard it for the first time at Juilliard in the 90's, also a recording by DF-D. It has accompanied heartbreak, heartache, regret, sorrow, yearning. It is the musical expression of my soul.
When I was a professional musician and in need of inspiration I would, and still do, listen to DFD. He is one of the greatest musicians I've ever heard! I can't thank him enough for bringing us all a piece of heaven!
@Chiliarches I don't completely agree about a mediocre voice. I think he was mostly smart about knowing the limitations of his voice. Thank goodness he championed lieder, because bigger voices have tried and failed miserably. His timbre is and vocal flexibility are what make him so great at what he did. I've actually known people that hated classical singing but loved his voice because it had a pure, honest quality to it.
D882〉by Ernst Schulze(1789-1817) Still sitz ich an des Hügels Hang, Wo ich an ihrer Seite ging So traulich und so nah, Es wandeln nur sich Will und Wahn,
The God of Voice. Great comments. The true "art" behind the "art song" is BOTH singer and accompanist working TOGETHER. So glad I stumbled upon this. Jetzt bin ich weinen. Miss him SO much.
There is no finer interpreter of the Schubert Lieder than D.F.Dieskau. They are the high standard against which all other recordings must be measured. And then to have the great Russian master at the piano: the ulti mum ! Charles
Vorbei, vorbei. Aber seine Stimme bleibt uns. Danke Dorje 1975
His voice is so incredibly present, his phrasing so definitive. I recently heard a recording of Elly Ameling singing this, and she seems to embody this song on the soprano side. ❤
Despite their great fame and the rather grandiose surroundings, Fischer-Dieskau and Richter succeed here in creating an intimate atmosphere, appropriately redolent of what the Germans call Hausmusik.
There is another YT post of Im Fruhling by the incomparable pair here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PAi7G1LBm5M.html The other is from the same era, but live. It's fun to compare the two, rather different, recordings. Either way, to my ears they are the greatest Schubert lied duo ever.
I'm not %100 right all the time, grant you that...however , I don't like sacchirin performances....... as if quietness were to give this song a certain mystery, just play it Richter ..... but, to each his own
Mediocre is a pretty misleading term. If you mean could his voice shatter glass at 10 paces like some very loud opera singers, maybe. But as to the quality of the sound: intonation, shading, rhythmic control he had few equals.
For me there are two singers who have miraculous voices that have never been equalled. The first is DFD and the second is Frank Sinatra. I revere both of them just the same.
I agree. I never listened to lieder and the blasting power of opera was not to my liking. But then I heard "Ging Heut Morgen Ubers Feld." Thanks to RU-vid and the artistry of DFD I now have an appreciation for this form of music.
You're absolutely right. DFD is a one of a kind artist with a special recognizable timbre. Some want to call that a flaw as in the case of Maria Callas but instead it should be seen as positive. His judicious use of falsetto is notable here in a change of harmony - phraseology and coloration of an intelligent musician.
This is indeed wonderful. Richter captivates not by simple phrasing but by the sheer amount of emotional purity he pours into his sentences. There is a CD by Deutsche Grammophon on the Galleria series which has 16 Lieder recorded by the pair around the time this was recorded. It includes an even better version of this song, as well as some of the most touching Lieder singing (and playing) I have heard.
What a joy, thank you so much for sharing. Such delicacy, control and colour from 2 great masters performing because they love the music - so much talent, so little ego. I love it. Richter always looks as though he could hurl a grand piano through the window with ease but his delicacy and DF-D's deceptively simple rendition touch the heart. A piano, two middle-aged men with real presence - simply wonderful.
