Do you need to pick out pistons for your project? Did you decided to go with a forged piston? Then you'll need to decide on 2618 or 4032! I'll tell you the differences between both and which is better for a street or a race engine.

Silicon....not silicone...rrally good explanation

Good explanation. Most of what I use is 4032. Because of street car and and occasionally bracket race. And mild power adders. I prefer to use it because you can usually run .001/.0015 tighter piston to wall tighter than 2618. Most of these engines are built for more longevity. However higher compression and higher horsepower applications almost require the 2618 material. Great subject and content. Take care, Ed.

Thanks for the info coverage! I recently acquired a set of summit 2618 pistons for a drift motor build & have started to do research on the different metals for valves/pistons/rods/etc! Hoping I made a good choice but seems like they’ll serve the intended purpose for now after seeing this!

This was very informal. Thank you for putting this out. I'm currently putting together an LS3 that needed a Bore, .30 to clean it. Only to find out, I shouldn't have. It made the block weaker. I picked up Hypereutectic pistons only to find out, they won't be good for 15 lbs of boost (LSA) So, I've been on Forge Piston education hunt. From your video, I think the 4032 would be better. This will be in a car I drive to work on Fridays and State to state to get away (Summertime only) Spinning some tires here and there. I think if I would go with 2618, it will wear quicker and I'll need another block because the block was already weakened the first round. If I wrong if you have any input, pls share. Again, Thanks for time you put into this

haha I completely understand. The older I get the more conservative I’ve been with the tune on anything I’ve built to keep from blowing holes in them.

Great video, it's a poorly understood subject. Alcoa is the supplier of 2618 and 4032 alloy to most piston makers in North America. In fact, a division of Alcoa supplies unfinished and semi-finished forgings to many piston companies. Only a few piston makers forge their own blanks, Mahle and DSS do, Wiseco makes many of their own forgings. There may be others making their own forgings, but not many. The advantage of the 2618 alloy is it's high ductility. This is a benefit in high boost, high cylinder pressure applications. The 4032 isn't as ductile. As you said, the 4032 expands much less and is more scuff resistant allowing tighter clearances for quieter operation. I have run 4032 pistons to 4 digit power numbers. The 2618 alloy can really take monster power. Thanks for the video.

All we used to run was 4032, so it's been around a long time and a proven metallurgy in racing. Of course, everyone and their grandmother wasn't running 8 turbos and making 7200 pounds of boost either!

@@MuscleCarSolutions Yes. Did some drastic tuning on mine today, I live at 5032 feet altitude. Full roller setup, Howards Rattler cam. Adjustable 1.7 rockers from comp basically Boss rockers and 7/16 studs. ARP bolts and studs where it matters. Balanced, milled, decked, ported heads and manifold. 1800 stall on a C6, 3.73 gears 4x2 1978 pickup truck.

I have a 2012 srt 8 392 and I purchased the 4032 pistons and went with a redeye cam lifters and also have long tubes. This will be a street car with very minimal drag runs. I plan on adding forces air and my goals are 650-700 at most rwhp did I make the right decision or would y’all have recommended the 2618? Thanks in advance !
@damnitdang
@damnitdang Год назад
Imo I'd go with the 2618, just a few more bucks. Just jeep oil level good amd give the engine good warm up before you smash. I went with 2618 for just 250-300hp, but probably 20psi and a bit higher back pressure due to .48ar for power down low. 2618 imo is an extra security
@Anarchy-Is-Liberty
@Anarchy-Is-Liberty 4 месяца назад
I'm running 4032's in a 550hp BBC, 11.66 compression, no power adders. Never had a problem yet. The machine work is the big issue. Make sure you've got a machinist that knows what he's doing and gets you the right tolerances, and you'll be good to go.

2618 - high expension rate or high expension amount ? Can you elaborate please?

@@MuscleCarSolutions would it be ok to use 4032 for this application ?
@MuscleCarSolutions
@MuscleCarSolutions Год назад
@@mv6160 that’s a very respectable number for a 2j. Assuming you’ll be boosted? Either will likely work, but I’d probably gravitate to the 2618. Your engine builder will be the best person to guide you on what will be best for the complete details of your engine.
