I can tell you one thing you walk around North or South Dakota from 8am to 4pm with dogs, gear, buddies etc, carrying around 7+ lbs of gun and shotshells, and 1-2 birds in your back vest bag, it’s going to wear a bit, so consider a lighter gun, lighter boots etc. you should consider a 28” barrel etc for a faster swing on hard flying wild birds. Don’t forget to break for lunch….
@AF-O6
@AF-O6 Год назад
…and then late season the birds run and won’t flush, and the dog gets sprayed by a skunk just in time to pack up and drive home. Pheasant hunting on the ND MT border is the coldest, hardest, funnest hunting ever!

Owned many shotguns. If you are thinking of buying a shotgun for both sporting clays and upland hunting consider going with a 20 bore sporting gun. You'll be fine for 90 percent of the clay presentations and you'll be light enough to carry in the field.

I like the field models honestly. Theres exceptions obviously but I shoot sporting Clay's mainly and bought the citori 725 feild with 28" barrels and love. Often shoot skeet also as a warm up also and it does great. Honestly though it's mostly form and doing everything right and consistent every single shot or atleast 95% of the time.

I love how you make it sound like 4 ounces is a big difference when you have to carry the gun in the field. A 1/4lbs. is negligible. Let's be more realistic. Like you stated, the differences aren't that much where you couldn't use either one for field or sport, and get the same results. I'm more inclined to believe it's a gun manufacturers way of trying to convince you that you need 2 separate guns, in order for them to make more money off you. I've taken my Remington 11-87 to the trap range and was hitting better than many of the people with their high dollar over and unders. Maybe it's worth it if you compete, but I think most people like to go clay shooting occasionally, in which case you can have as much fun, and very good success, with your field gun. That's just me.
@tgsoutdoors
@tgsoutdoors 6 лет назад
In a basic grade like this there isnt much difference, mostly because the manufacturers dont want to commit to either camp. In the higher end of things the differences are much more pronounced

Thomas....I agree when every one had 28" barrels they convinced people to buy 30" when they saturated the market with these they the tried to sell us 32". I use a remi 1100 to teach with. Easy to shoot low recoil and above all SAFE in use. I have shot just about every discipline with this 28" modified choke hits just about every thing if you cant hit it with this then you shouldn't be shooting at it

most sporters are suitable for game shooting too - there are a few guns that do bridge the gap well - the miroku mk60 the beretta 693 sport the browning 725 pro sport any mid weight perazzi or clone thereof

Cory.. A berretta 686 silver pigeon multi choke with 28" barrels will do just about anything you want. you will have a gun for all seasons I have shot D/T/L, Skeet, Sporting , Compact, Pheasants , Wood pigeon, all with the same gun you just change the chokes to suit the job in hand. And you cant wear it out . I have a 686 Onyx which is the grand papa of the pigeon its 35years old it never misses a beat I shoot 87%+ on clays with it im 74 and if I sold it [which I wont] I would get my money back. what's not to like

I bought a yildiz 12 gauge/bore in yalls terms it 5.8 pounds which is like 2.6 kilos is this more consistent with a game gun or a sporter? I’m new to the O/U guns I just always have pumps mossberg 500 12 for home defense and a short barrel Remington 870 in 20 gauge for a truck gun. So now I have a actual hunting shotgun and was just curious and what it would be classified as.

Thanks! They are roughly $800 USD less expensive than a 686 Silver Pigeon Sporting. The gun is quite ugly, however, the affordable price makes it attractive as I have a hard time affording a Silver Pigeon or another Browning. In the U.S. those seem to be the primary options before getting into substantially more expensive guns. Thanks for responding and for considering doing a review!

Hi there - Thanks - this is very, very useful - been shooting clays for many years and have always loved my Beretta Sporting guns - 1 x Silver Pigeon and 1 x 682 Gold. Want to buy my son and daughter (11 and 13 years old) a clay gun and am looking at 28” Silver Pigeons in Sporting and Field models. Leaning towards a Field gun in 28” as it is lighter for them. This will only be for clays. They get tired of holding my 30” Sporters. Also the stock is shorter on the Field which is better for them, right? I can put an adjustable cheek-piece in for them to raise it if needed. Have seen a quality used Field gun in multi-choke, which is perfect. Any thoughts on why I should NOT go down the Field gun route as described above. Thinner rib a problem longer-term maybe? Lighter gun not a recoil problem as I use 21 gram ammo in any case. Can’t make a mistake in South Africa here as licences are so darned tough to come by. Thanks for your help and advice...!
@tgsoutdoors
@tgsoutdoors 5 лет назад
I think the only problem may be comb hight on the field gun, so be prepared to stick a comb raiser on the gun. Other than that it’s not a bad idea.

I have noticed 2 styles of checkering on the Silver Pigeon 1; one style as shown in this video, and the other style is the 'V' shape style checkering on the grip and fore stock. Are these different years of manufacturing of the SP1 or a different reason?
@tgsoutdoors

Both age and model related I believe. Older models have the v type chequering. Now the field and sporter variants have different v and rounded chequering respectively

@pbgd3

Steel shot is less about the barrel metal in modern guns than it is about the chokes. You have to check the gun but if it's a modern gun with removable chokes and a 3" chamber it is probably steel safe.

A gun's a gun: Put in a shell, close the action, pull the trigger and it goes bang. If weight in the field is an issue for you, as it is for me, use a light, smaller gauge gun. There is very little game that you'll be pursuing on foot in the field that you can't kill just as well with a 20 bore as with a 12.

@The Gun Shop Thank you for your videos I like the common sense technical assessment. I acquired my 20ga. Browning Citori Lighting in 1988. It has been a solid performer and after thousands of shells the Citori has yet to fail in any dimension. I am looking for a new Browning Citori 12 ga. I am considering the Citori 725 Sport however when I went to my local gun shop they were really pushing the Beretta "top of the bottom" , Sorry I stole that phrase from you, base Pigeon model. They discussed some of the features you have addressed in several videos. My upland bird hunting and Field Trial Competition days are over at least in the near future. Upland bird leases costs prohibitive in Texas due to Oil and Gas drilling among other things. I also gave up golf due to nagging injuries thus I want to transition back to Sporting Clays "pigeon" , Trap and Skeet. What shotgun would you recommend, I am a Loyal Browning customer but gun shops tell me to try the Berreta. I wonder if Beretta is offering better profit margins to dealers or is there a logical explanation to choose Beretta over Browning. I understand the Beretta's are over all less expensive to service but I have never had to have my Citori lighting serviced. You thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I have been hunting all most everything that walk and fly on the earth, for 50 years. Hunting with everything from the most heavy DG rifles to 40 lbs traditional bow. This spring I shoot my first wild turkeys, 20 gauge 28 barrel 69 yards and 63 yards. A nice lighter weight 20 gauge will kill everything a 12 gauge can kill. One can use longer barrel without ending up being to slow on more complicated birds like woodcocks (not speaking driven fly over in the park woodcocks)
@tgsoutdoors
@tgsoutdoors 5 лет назад
No doubt that in terms of ballistics a 20 can take on a 12, but the load variety and availability of 12 ammunition is just that much greater.
@oddmunddale806

The Gun Shop When I was young and kill a lot of birds there was only one brand of shotgun ammo in the shelfs at home (Nittedal Spesial). The amazing thing are they preform as good as the most expensive ammo today. There are plenty of good ammo in 20 gauge, problem today are there are also plenty of low quality ammo ;) More to pick from dont have to be a benefit, can be if one are a clever picker.

The dimensions on the stocks should be different. The ribs should have different widths, one with center bead and the hunting model without. A sporting gun also weighs more, dedicated Trap or Skeet guns weight much more, sometimes approaching 10lbs. Believe it or not Sporting Clay guns look and feel more like a field gun which is why the two guns in the video are very similar. A dedicated Trap or Skeet gun would have a Monte Carlo stock, a meatier Forend and potentially a raised Broadway rib. You would look silly hunting with a dedicated Trap or Skeet gun but you would “Not” look silly hunting with a sporting Clay gun.
