This video shows the Difference between Beam and Joist. Beam is a flexural member like the joist but joist are always more in numbers in a structure and they take the load and transfer to beam and beam then transfer load to column and so on. Beam is a primary member and the joists are secondary members. Joist are always small in cross section while beam is bigger in cross section than joist. For more details please watch full video.

Yes, excellent video. The drawing and simple explanation really helped me understand how the load is transferred and the differences between joists and beams. Thank you!

Afternoon Rusty ! I just saw this video. When you showed us the 8x16 shed with the little front porch for the price of $6,200 it’s not bad if someone is a good DIYer.

Slab ? I was looking for information about ceiling joists. I still havequestions.

How can the beam in the middle of the slab transfer load to the four columns if it is not supported by any structural member?

No expert but pretty sure that beam from the center in your illustration can't hold the weight as it lacks any column support right? I assume the beams go underneath and somewhere towards the parameter atop the columns for support. Again no expert just confused as to how it would function in your completed illustration.

why we put beam in the middle of joist, 2 beams from each side is enough? could you give definitions please?
@StartCamera530
@StartCamera530 6 месяцев назад
That beam in middle is a secondary beam which connects to the main beams on each side..

So basically joists are used in long span buildings because you’d have to place a beam inside the building otherwise and people don’t want/like that. Joists are horizontal members that replace the beams you would’ve put instead.
@erichill7560
@erichill7560 6 месяцев назад
And I have to think that the edges of the slab are also beams, so that their role in transferring load to the columns is accounted for?

Put another way, every joist is a crossbeam, but not every crossbeam is a joist.
