Report Your Scrap Prices: iScrapApp.com - Many scrappers have been asking about this video to help them identify die cast compared to cast aluminum. We wished it was easier for you to identify the difference but it's difficult. We suggest trying the scratch test out and if not, you can always ask your scrap yard if they can use an analyzer on the materials.

I think he meant making a new alloy. I'm pretty sure making a new element requires a nuclear reactor or a partial accelerator.

You can test if there's magnesium in the alloy with a few drops of acid (vinegar).

Use root kill..quarter teaspoon to a spray bottle of water..scratch a spot then spray it..if it turns black it’s die cast..if it does nothing and stays shiny it’s cast aluminum

Another way to identify is by how they break. Die cast breaks easier and has a rough texture when its broken plus may as sprakle when held up to light. Also weight is a tell tale sign.

So, "Die Cast" is what some *door knob and lock sets are partially made of along with some lavatory and kitchen sink faucets* are made of??? That *grey metal* part. NOT the shiny chrome or copper / brass looking part...
@mikek6255

As tinman stated when broken die cast has brighter sparkles or specks, cast aluminum is dull when broken and uniform in color.
@MrMcGoo-rm3yu
@MrMcGoo-rm3yu 2 года назад
That doesn't sound right. I've always separated by "aluminum is lighter & whiter" where as pot metal or die cast is "heavier & darker in color".

We learned so much about steel in school but aluminum can fall off the radar sometimes. Very cool video that covers the important basics!
@Benjamin-tx6vv
@Benjamin-tx6vv 8 лет назад
this guy doesnt fully know what hes talking about: die cast is a process not an alloy as he makes it sound. Aluminum is die cast all the time; there are a number of different aluminum alloys used for die casting. Die casting is a casting process that involves adding pressure to reduce voids with in the casting.

I work in a casting plant, we use 390 and 383 alloy. 390 is what Stihl and Husqvarna pistons are made from and Husqvarna cylinder heads are also 390. What im getting at is that we test the metal in our furnaces daily and 390 alloy has a slew of different metals in it

Not quite accurate. Both of those are castings. One is an aluminum gravity casting (maybe investment cast) the alloy is most likely Al356 which is an alloy of that consists of Aluminum with Silicon and Magnesium, etc. The smaller casting is a die casting, and most likely a zinc die casting (probably Zamak 3) that has about 4% aluminum and a bit of magnesium. Both are different types of alloys, neither one being a pure aluminum as he is suggesting. Not shown here are also aluminum die castings, which would also be an alloy made of up silicon and aluminum - similar to A356 both with a different composition. I believe what they are trying to differentiate is aluminum castings ("Aluminum Cast") with zinc castings ("die cast"). You do not want to mix the alloys together for sure. In fact it would be smarter to have a few more categories such as aluminum cast, aluminum die cast, zinc die cast...

You seem to know a lot. Can you tell me or help learn more about the different types of alloys and their composition. Also what they are most commonly used for. For example. What product parts/pieces are made out of extruded aluminum. Or better still how do I know if I have Extruded, Cast, Domestic Aluminum. Is there a trick to find out what I have. Scrap yards around my area don't teach you much, they cheat and rip us off when they can. Is there a book or web page I can go to ? You strike me as honest and knowledgeable. thanks

This confused me more than help me.. so one is sometimes easy to scratch and sometimes hard, you can cut it with a sawzall, if you throw it on the ground it might break.. yea ok.. mmhmm.. do you all really do any of these kind of tests when reselling it to your refining companies or do ya put it in trucks and send it off to be dumped in piles again somewhere else?

Hmm, we've never heard of using copper sulfate to tell the two apart. After some research, it looks like copper sulfate is used as a fungicide/herbicide in both agricultural and non-agricultural settings.

So why put different metals in a die cast? To make it cheaper? Stronger?
@ryanwinter1125
@ryanwinter1125 6 лет назад
What he is referring to is an alloy. Pure metals are rarely cast, it is always an alloy. They cast better and are stronger, etc...
@garywheeler7039
@garywheeler7039 4 года назад
There is a science to die casting. It is often very thin and is used in very complicated shapes that don't need much machining after they are done. Its almost used like plastic. It has a reputation for being thin and cheap though. Its often painted or covered with chrome or disguised in some way.

@Benjamin-tx6vv
@Benjamin-tx6vv 8 лет назад
+TheNewport2009 there are many types of pot metal, pewter is a specific alloy
@garywheeler7039
@garywheeler7039 4 года назад
@@TheNewport2009 Pewter is an old fashioned silvery grey colored tin alloy used by the colonists in the 1700's and such. The old pewter might have some lead in it, new reproductions of pewter ware is non-lead material. What we call pot metal today, are alloys of zinc and other metals also of a silvery color. Die casting is a method that mostly uses pot metal, and uses pressure in a mold to make things quickly similar to the way plastic parts are made. It was developed in the 1930s and 40's I think. Became popular in the 1950's for household goods, car parts, appliance parts, toy guns, etc. The fact that new pennies are made out of zinc with a copper finish might give a clue that it is not expensive.

I don’t know a single yard that cares about the forming process beyond it being cast V extruded. Even then it’s only as a quick rule of thumb regarding the purity alloy aluminium percentage how much they’ll pay. What they do after I drop it off is their business
