I don't know if there is a test online, but I think it'd be a good resource to compare the look of the DS vs. non-DS lenses, to see if there really is a difference in consistency in color, or if it's really just marketing. Have you done that with the 35mm lens, since you have both versions?
I'm looking to invest in more lenses I have about a $1,400 currently from a commercial and I'm getting another $500 from a convention I did. Now I mention this because I could either just buy the other Rokinon or get the DS line and wait for the next pay check. (Which is what I will do) and I wasn't sure the difference but I thank you for posting this and I'm very excited
+AndrewSun15 There are more lens choices in the 'DS Line'. Optically they might be close, but I want to say the first Cine version was a bit rushed, and the DS LINE is where they started making them the right way. It seems they pretty much stopped expanding on the first versions.
+Joseph Jobe That is a Dual Follow Focus from SHAPE: www.shapewlb.com/en/product/products/accessories/follow-focus/follow-focus-pro-full-kit_354.aspx?id_page_parent=134 Also the background was something I wanted to test out. Just a vinyl image that you stick on the wall.
Thanks for the solid info as always Mr. Cheesy Cam. Question - which shoulder rig attachment do you have on that rig? I was unable to find it on the came-tv website. Is it another brand?
+elfaroproductions Seriously. One Canon L lens can pay for a whole set of these. Lots of benefits to using the Cine DS over autofocus lenses when shooting video. I now own more Rokinon (and XEEN) cine lenses than any other brand. If you're a pixel peeper these aren't the best, but for most people and client work, it's damn good.
+MrCheesyCam Bought the DS 10mm instead of the standard one. Thanks for such a great video on this very specific topic! I have a black magic cinema camera, so having a lens as sharp as possible is key since I have a 2.2x crop factor or something (so, a slightly soft lens looks extra soft). If you have any recommendations for primes that are extra sharp in the center, please let me know! Like 20mm, 24mm, maybe 35mm range.
Neat and sweet video quality.and awesome reviews. Can you please suggest which is the best professional prime lens for Nikon D7200?i mean in terms of best quality and overall features and making.
Nikon makes the best Prime lenses for Nikon cameras. It all depends what you want to spend. I chose Rokinon as a base kit of lenses, but I own other specialty lenses also.
+Ashor K The Rig is a bunch of different parts put together. Carbon rods from PVGear.com Handles are part of the cage (normally) but I've mounted them on the rails. The Sony cage is from CAME-TV.com The follow focus is a Professional Dual Follow Focus from SHAPE: www.shapewlb.com/en/product/products/accessories/follow-focus/follow-focus-pro-full-kit_354.aspx?id_page_parent=134
i wanna buy the rokinon 100mm macro for my a6500. there is a DS CINE version which is 490$ and there is the non CINE version which is 550$. I'm wondering which one to buy and why the non CINE is 60$ expensive than the CINE that makes no sense !
Thanks for the info! You said the DS lenses in general have better quality. Do you have side by side footage for comparison between the DS and non DS at the same focal length?
No sorry, but it is mainly lens coatings I heard that make them different. Lens coatings can control things like lens flare which could reduce contrast or sharpness.
Hi Emil, Ive noticed you're still using canon mounts for the sony body, is there a reason you didnt get the native mounts. Im assumg so you're not tied down into one system for freedom and flexibility? Also are the sony mount rokinon lenses longer than the canon ones because they're incorporating the mounts with the lens?
The longer flange distance of canon EF mount lenses means that if he gets a different camera body, it's highly likely he can adapt his lenses to it. The Sony E mount can't be adapted to any other system other than those Kinefinity cameras. The main reason to get Sony native lenses for a Sony body is to improve autofocus performance. Considering that these are all manual lenses, getting them in the Sony mount would only be a negative down the line because there would be no real benefit and he would not be able to reuse the lens on other systems.
I'm torn between Rokinon DS & Zeiss Loxia for video. Need to buy all new primes for my Sony a7sii. Do these allow for Sonys focusing features and peaking?
MrCheesyCam where can i buy ur kind of follow focus gear?i am in love with your follow focus gear.planning to buy the same product.where can i get it?please name the product and model no.
are the filter thread sizes standard in all DS line of lenses? i have my 85mm with 72mm thread and wonder if all the other lenses are in 72mm thread diameter? thanks for the reponse.
Depends which Rokinon DS mount you buy and for what camera you are using it for. If you buy Canon EF mount Rokinon and want to use on MFT camera, then you need the Canon EF to MFT metabones adapter, but keep in mind the Rokinon DS is manual lenses. So there is no electronics. You could just buy a cheaper focal reducer since you don't need auto focus.
T-stops are about the same as f-stops. It is measured based on the transmitted light, rather than the ratio of the focal length to the opening size of the iris. The DoF is realities the same. T-Stops are just more accurate and consistant across the same set of lenses. But to answer your question, T-1.5 is the same as F-1.5 (at least as far as DoF goes. There are differences. Just not major.)
+Jay Madej Tried a few different tests, very hard to see any difference at all. Haven't found the right examples to show any major differences. They say the XEEN are using the same stuff as the Cine DS, and I believe it. The only major differences are build (XEEN all standard lengths, same lens diameters, etc) and also the XEEN as 11 blade iris, while the Cine DS only has 8. Otherwise almost exactly the same image.
+MrCheesyCam Thanks for posting this video. If you're saying that Xeen and Cine DS are close then I'm definitely going to stick with the DS line. Honestly, what impresses me the most is when a company can bring a fantastic product to market at an affordable price.
