You've heard the terms but aren't sure what is meant by pleating to the sett or pleating to the stripe. In this video, USA Kilts explains the difference in the terms and shows you examples of each.
Transcript:
There are two basic ways to pleat a kilt. You can pleat to the sett, when the pleats mimic the tartan itself, or you can pleat a kilt to the stripe which is where you decide to pick a dominant stripe and run it down the center of every single pleat.
Pleating to the stripe or to the line, or military pleating as it’s also known, you have a very different appearance on the back of the kilt than you do the front.
When pleating to the sett, the pattern remains constant all the way around. When in doubt, pleat to the sett. Every kilt looks good pleated to the sett, not every kilt looks good pleated to the stripe.
