Difference Between Xanax & Ativan? 

I’m 63 and suffered with Anxiety most my life…..I do best on Xanax and have no intention of coming off…at this point I’m not worried about addiction! Anxiety is HELL Do what works!

You pretty much nailed it. I remember Xanax as a hard hitting bliss whereas Ativan gets your head over the clouds very gradually. It makes you feel as your better normal self. But If you take 2-3 times the prescribed dose, you'll start doing nonsense things. Like : - cleaning the kitchen appliances at 3 am - disassemble any loudspeakers to try to make them better - drive your car late at night to find your favorite chocolate - install your large telescope in the street to observe deep sky objects The problem at higher doses is desinhibition. You start doing things you would never normally do. You could as well call sick at your job for 2 days, only to found yourself doing these nonsical activities that serves nothing.

All meds you take daily are addicting in a way bc one takes them daily. The stigma benzos are addictive should change to they are very hard to come off of . All pills are technically daily / addicting

I havnt tried Ativan, I've been on and off Xanax for 24 years. I'm 63, and sometimes, like you, it gets too much. I've had up to 7mg a day, now I'm down to 2, sometimes 3mg......there's a lot more to say but it's triggering for me. Unfortunately my mother in law struggled with addiction of benzodiazepines and she passed because she got prescribed three different benzodiazepines and she would take more and more and sleep loose track of time pill addiction killed her

Xanax knocked me out. I would be asleep in 15 min. Ativan I could work and function and not have 20 panic attacks. My Son died and I have been on xanax didnt work Kolonopin made me want to die Ativan finally helped me want to live again.

I find the people that have the biggest problems with benzos are the people who are addicted to them and take to many as they then can’t live life without them and become dependent on them and it’s almost impossible to get them of them and live life normally again….I was prescribed them to use therapeutically which I found have been great for my mental health I have chronic PTSD and I find taking 10-15 mg twice a week with a couple of whiskeys is extremely relaxing and gives me a chance to clear my mind… If they are working for you and you don’t keep upping your dose to the point where they are not working anymore then keep taking them and enjoy your life as life is short and you deserve to be happy.

I've took Ativan for 3 years it was more of a strong sedative I took 1 mg 3 times a day it didn't make me socail llike xanex does but you are rite xanex hits harder but dont last long Klonopin is the best in my opinion only problem is it was made by teva and they had a. Distribution problem so hella different new generic ones that suck that's why I switched to Xanax hopefully teva comes back because they made me the best person and gave me energy and I didn't always need to take all 3

Thanks for sharing. I used to take lorazepam every day when the ssri didn’t work for me for years. I took smart pills too, piracetam, to give me motivation under the influence of sedatives. It is a mild nootropics pills. Now, when the psychiatrist changed to use remeron than ssri, I am good with remeron. And I finally can get rid of sedatives, or only take them in special occasions.

It's nice to see you talking about anxiety and life chalenges as a man because not many do. I am currently on Ativan an Valium plus other sedating meds. Withing 10 years I lost 4 of my closest family members and a friend, with little emotiinal support. I wouldn't be able to function and not be medicated.

Had a panic attack 2 years ago at work and it totally changed my life for the worse. I admitted myself into the ER because I initially thought I was having a heat attack. Laid in bed off days crying for no reason. The doctor proscribed me lorazepams the first time I visited him. About 2 weeks later the panic attacks totally stoped “never took any of the meds because of how addicted I herd benzos could be. Fast forward 2 years later and out of no where I’m having panic attacks. Dry heaving, gagging, feel like a lump is in my throat, can’t breath. Been feeling like this for a week now and so hard to not take anything for it. I have very addictive personality and don’t wana get sucked in. I have 2 children, a gorgeous wife and a house we almost own now. The brain chemicals are a weird thing.

I’ve been on both drugs and I guess I never really thought much about the differences between the two. My doctor said that Xanax has some antidepressant characteristics. I was diagnosed with Clinical Depression in 1990. But I approach this subject from a different angle. I got badly addicted to both drugs. Withdrawal was living Hell. There’s no other way to describe it. My Primary told me that Benzo withdrawal is worse than Heroin withdrawal and Opioid withdrawal. When I came off Ativan I couldn’t eat solid food for nearly a month! You absolutely could not pay me to take either drug again, and I strongly discourage anyone from taking either. Just one man’s dreadful experience! 🤔

I get anxiety so bad that Ativan wouldn’t calm me down sometimes other times it works great.

Difference is Xanax is lipophilic so it has a faster onset of action and lorazepam,Ativan, is hydrophilic so it has a relatively slower onset of action. Ativan also has a longer duration bc of its molecular properties. It stays in the vascular compartment longer than Xanax which is absorbed by your fat cells bc it’s more lipophilic

I've had terrible anxiety my whole life. My doctors won't ever prescribe me benzos though because I had a drug hospitalization when I was in highschool so now they consider me a drug addict

I've been taking a quarter mg Xanax 2x daily . So .5 total for 11 days now. Should I taper down and how long if so? Ready to try hydroxyzine now that I am in a better place. But I will say Xanax has worked wonderfully

I struggled with benzo addiction. I had to go to the hospital to detox. I had a script and I bought scripts. I'd do 5 scripts a month

I've taken Xanax and Ativan on occasion, and I noted the time effects (time to kick in and duration) are about as you stated. However, the drawback of Xanax for me was short-term memory loss. My benzo of choice for sleeplessness is now just 1-mg of Ativan every three or four days at bedtime. At this rate, I don't think there's any chance of addiction other than possibly psychological dependence.

Another thing worth noting is that ativan/lorazepam can come in sublingual doses, but not always. I think its less common for xannax.

Who gives out 5mg tabs of Xanax. That seems a little crazy if your taking multiple times a day. I have been on/off Rivotril for over 20 years and I took 2mg tabs and that is pretty high. When I lived in USA the doc maxed me at 1 mg a day for Xanax. I didn't even know they made 5mg tabs.

My health went weird these last six months. Out of what felt like left field I now have MS. I am now waiting for further MRIs to start my dmt. I'm a little stressed so my GP prescribed lexapro. Did work for me but I learned a new medical term cervical dystonia. Terrifying. But the er doc prescribed Ativan and it has HELPED. I only use it when I loose it, and that's not offen but bad when it happens.

I have been dealing with social anxiety, especially trying to eat a meal around people, especially in a restaurant, but I've even felt anxiety at the dinner table with family. It's as if I literally forget how to swallow my food and it causes panic. Which is best for me in this case??

Yeah I've had Lorazepam for years now(ativan). I used to take a piece of one to help me sleep. I have insomnia and addiction issues, although I am clean now but I still sleep like absolute crap...if I do sleep. Its crazy man.....drugs.

I just switched to Lorazepam from alprazolam recently. My doctor thought it would be better due to slightly longer half-life.

Clonazepam is better than either. Just take periodic breaks at times of less stress so you don’t get addicted. I’d NEVER take anything from the streets. One of my nephews is a cop. He says just about everything is laced with fentanyl.

Doc upped my klonopin to 1mg as needed due to .5mg not doing anything. Says if that doesn’t work to call him and he will write me a script for Ativan

Best be careful with benzos. Some people can come off them with little problems, but others are sent to hell trying to stop.

I myself have been on millions of medications starting at the age of five or six I spent my whole childhood in group homes institutions and hospitals and Foster families my mom had some drug problems and I paid the price but do I play my mental illness on my mother no I don't believe my mental illness came from having this childhood the answer to that question is no even though I've been through hell and back no child should have to go through that but I wasn't the only one get millions of children tossed group homes in institutions I looked at it as a punishment because I had nothing wrong my mom said that I didn't get along with other children and that I acted out but that wasn't the reason I was supposedly put in a group home my mom might not tell me me the truth of the whole story but I had a grandfather and grandmother I had two uncles one was my mom's brother and the other was my grandfather's brother Uncle Jerry who supposed to be my godfather in the case something happens to my mother I don't have much memory because it's so far I go but I'll never forget this day me and my uncle pulling up into a parking lot getting out of the car and we went into the institution in fact I'm a 56 year-old kid I didn't know where we were going but my uncle gave you me explanation he just dropped me off there like I was a dog kicked out of the house and thrown into a camnel anyway I think the trauma did cause a lot of the problems I myself also have been on Ativan and Xanax Klonopin and Valium I'm on Klonopin now Valium and months ago exact switch the Klonopin but when I took Xanax I was just pass out as long as I would do was sleep and I felt like a zombie although it kept things out of your Bay and constantly had to be increased Ativan was the first one that I tried I could have took in the whole bottle and have no effect I figured I'd stopped and it then I was put on Valum for a short time well that wasn't working enough I would switch to Xanax but this time I went to jail and they wouldn't let me back on the medications so I was on Klonopin but my doctor said they're switching that I have to go to a psychiatrist to obtain my medicine he pointed xanaxs to addictive turn me into a zombie after 2/3 months I had to be tplen off Valium I'm now on Klonopin that one was definitely the most effective it's actually the only one that I can feel working

I take my benzos sublingual or underneath your tongue that's how I take my benzos is a kicking a lot faster and have a tasty beverage nearby just in case your mouth gets dry because that's one of the bad parts of taking your benzos underneath your tongue not taste well at all that's one thing I will tell you this tastes nasty but you do get used to after about three weeks maybe even less but it don't taste half as bad you get used to the taste at least I got used to it it really quick under the tongue is the best way to take any benzodiazepine is underneath your tongue I'm not advising anybody to go out and try this I'm not a doctor so take how you're doctor tells you to suggest that under-the-tongue method is the best way for me

Idk if it’s just how my body metabolites the drug or how insensitive my gaba receptors are to benzos cuz I would take 2mg of Xanax and still be able to function and be present where like my mom would take 2mg of Xanax and be completely knocked out for some reason benzos don’t really make me sleepy they just make me relaxed but for some people it seems as though benzos hit them a lot harder than they do for me another thing is people say Xanax lasts for 3-4 hours but for me it really feels like it only lasts for an hour and a half whereas people say Ativan lasts 8 hours for them but for me it only lasts 3 and a half hours max so strange
