Thank you all for the love on this video! I notice some people asking about the sword and I went with it for two reasons. 1. It made for a more personal interaction. 🤺2. Since I wanted Siren Penelope to be closer to him at the end of Suffering. So I needed a short range weapon. ❤ but thanks again for the support! Your comments are low key cracking me up 😂.

I believe the reason for the usual depiction is because you can actually hear him let loose an arrow in the song. The same sound is used in Polyphemus and Odysseus. In this animatic, it is cleverly absent because it starts a few seconds into the song.

I love how you aren't afraid to show the siren’s humanity, they WOULD be terrified and heartbroken just like Odysseus was with polyphemus, because the only difference between the crew and the monsters they fight is who wins, and I really feel you captured that. He can't afford to feel bad for them, because he has to put survival first.

This animatic made me think that one of the reasons why Odysseus was so brutal is because the sirens had the audacity to beg for mercy. I feel like like if they didn't try to beg then he wouldn't have drawn out their suffering and just go for a clean kill.
@rairaion2612
@rairaion2612 Месяц назад
That and one of them pretended to be Penelope. I like to image that at 1:39, Odysseus get visibly angry just for that. And in Suffering he is holding back his rage because how DARE this SIREN impersonate his wife!
@error8119
@error8119 Месяц назад
oh no 100%, you can hear the bite in his voice in the song. He’s angry because they remind him of himself during the Poly fiasco. Causing damage and then begging for mercy, he understands where Poly was coming from and it pisses him off. Remember they killed Poly’s best friend and then tried to beg for mercy thinking “there’s no reason to kill us, it’s a sheep and we didn’t know he was here” or in other words “we didn’t know their defense was so strong” and here are the sirens coming to the same realization, “we didn’t know they were so strong” and they start begging for their life, like that erases what they’ve done and tried to do. He’s realizing not only was Athena right in that specific instance but what she said about all his men who died in that cave was right, it was his fault. Which is why he gets so brutal, he has to prove to himself and the crew they are no longer like that, they CANT be like that because they want to get home. They have to prove here that they are now the monsters, the ones who have no remorse or sympathy to those who attack them, just like Poly

"I made a mistake like this that almost cost my life." Given what occurs in "Scylla," he would've been better off having "spared" the Sirens. By which I mean he could've tied the six torches to six of the dead siren corpses, and tossed each one towards one of Scylla's heads, that way, Eurylochus and the crew wouldn’t have mutined later on. Granted, that still would've left the whole "Cows of the Sun God" deal though to deal with.
@notovny
@notovny 12 дней назад
In the universe of the Musical, the Mutiny probably wouldn't have happened without Odysseus ordering Eurylochus to designate the six men to be sacrificed. If the Mutiny doesn't happen, Odysseus is still in command when the get to the Island of the Sun God, and might have been able to persuade them not to take the cattle. In the universe of the Odyssey of Homer, though... Odysseus was in command when they got there, it didn't stop them.

i really like your animatics. i feel like a lot of the other artists drawing them are afraid to draw anything too violent because they're afraid of really showing that Odesseus has fallen so far into cruelty and despair. but you're bringing that out perfectly. I think my favorite part is when the Chorus is singing about him being the "Man made Monster" because i think it has great double connotations. He is both a man who has been made into a monster, and a monster made by man namely the rest of his crew both living and dead. later when we find that 90% of the deaths on this voyage can be laid soundly at the feet of his men for disobeying orders and yet he is the one who constantly gets told hes at fault god its heartbreaking.

My running theory is that Scylla is more dangerous than the legend lets on. If Poseidon's afraid to go to her lair, I'm thinking there's some sort of Lovecraftian mind-f$%^ thing tied to her name and presence, and it entices those that know of her to feed her 6 mouths, rather than go for more crafty methods of getting past her. In Odysseus' case, it made him more ruthless and less intelligent once he heard her name from the siren. All the way until he'd fed her his men to get through.

In the original Odyssey, Scylla purposefully takes the six strongest men. She kinda has a whole vendetta against men given it was the lust of a male god that got her turned into a monster. @@juliusarcher7241 Hey I never said to fell sympathy for them. don't get it twisted I do feel a little bad but that's only my human responce. I do understand the needs of having to harden one's heaert when it comes to monsters, because Monsters lack humanity. That's why we call them monsters. I'm just sayingt if the one who taught Odysius to be ruthless and was stalking him wasn't Poisidon the god ofthe Sea but was just another killable monster then he'd wind up regretting teaching that lesson to Oddyseus who survived nearly being killed by him. and keep in mind Odyseus spared his son's life which was generaly gracius but Posoidon apprantly hates nicee guys. Truth be told it kind of was a good thing because other wise who else would have been abel to go out and kill more monsters on the sea? Odyseus might be a nice guy but he's also wicked smart and when he's able to harden his own ehart he can truely become a blood thirsty monster's worst enemy. However...we also know he sistll doesn't kill all the monsters. infact he kind of sacrifices some people along the way which is less heroic and mroe self serving. But hear killing the Sirans this was what they like to call a Necessary evil. Yes it feels evil to genecide them all but I never said I condem it. You feel shame for killing a man eating shark or bear because it's a wild animal just trying to survive, that doesn't mean you justify the deaths it caused simply because you feel sorry for it. If anything the Sirans could eeasily avoid all this had they stuck to eating fish or anything else that swims. No they deserve to die for killing people, that's a death they brought on their own heads. And yes as you said had they been spared they would have become affective killers. Like trapping an animal who's killed only to let it go would only allow it to adapt to being even harder to kill and catch in the future. But my main point is, if Posoidon caed for the Sirans or the other monsters of the Sea any it would have served him well to understand some symblance of grace and mercy. I'm mostly just giving a commentary. So try not to take my words otu of context even if alot but to little. Still I suppose our choice of words do seem to enfluence how others read us. So I do apreciat the comment.

He did the right thing, but not in the right way. Yes, he eliminated a threat, but later when facing Scylla he could have sacrificed the sirens in the place of his men, but hatred and the lack of foresight through desperation of wanting to see his wife blinded him to that possible potential future. And leaving the sirens alive and just blinding or maiming them like the cyclops just would have been a dumb move again on his part because of what he's already facing aka Poseidon. He would have increased the growing enemy gods that are after him like the god that created the sirens Achelous if he left them alive but scared them for life. Remember ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves and Zeus and all the gods at the throwing the baby over the wall believe that way at least most of them.

@HReiss0 Месяц назад
Kratos is a god though, I think it would go more like the encounters odysseus has with other gods, they're not on the same playfield, get me? I think a conflict of interests would be more interesting because if it was a straight up battle, I feel bad for Odysseus already.

@HReiss0
@HReiss0 Месяц назад
@@JabamiLain I mean, it's possible. But from Kratos mindset I think he would consider Odysseus a threat, the guy is just way too smart and cunning to let him live, Kratos definetly embodies the "Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves thing" There's also the thing that usually sparing would be considered an act of disrespect in Ancient Greece, dying in battle is pretty honorable in Ancient Greece.
@JabamiLain
@JabamiLain Месяц назад
@@HReiss0I see. Odysseus and Kratos would make great gods of wisdom and war, respectively. I love the saga, don't have anything really bad about it (other than deny "Ragnarok" existance, that is), but I admit its full monopolization of Kratos could get irritating sometimes. Having learned more about the gods' personalities recently, I wished we could have gotten, for example, an arc involving Aphrodite. Again, this isn't meant to be hatred, just a personal complaint.

When I first heard this song, specifically the end, I realize that Odysseus has fallen so far, mostly cuz out of the hundreds of ways that he could have punished the sirens without literally leaving them to drown we're all far more humane while still reducing them to far below the predator they once were. Instead of lopping off their tails, he could have cut their tongues, or had their teeth and talons removed, or any other number of ways that would have reduced them from predator to prey, he was senselessly cruel in a way that was in all essence inefficient
@maisathedragonartist3364
@maisathedragonartist3364 Месяц назад
Huh thats.....a interesting take, but I think he would be making the same mistake he made with the cyclops, and i believe that the sirens, even with some of their body parts removed, would still find other ways to prey on men on ships. But the concept of turning a feared predator into a ''lesser'' predator by taking the one thing that they have vantage over their preys is intriguing. 🤔🤔
@linus8380
@linus8380 Месяц назад
@@maisathedragonartist3364 I kind of get how it could be taken as what he could have done with the sirens would be what he did with the Cyclops, but all in all not really, still had such overwhelming strength that while it was at a disadvantage it could still easily kill anything it wanted, while the sirens, if they were, say, rendered mute, would have been excessively reduced in methods of persuasion, certainly they could attract prey by their visage, what was being hot fish women, but due to their voices having a magical nature, their magical abilities being rendered null would drastically limit their abilities, sure they could physically overpower a sailor once the sailor is in the water, but their method of hunting is mostly reliant on them one way or another convincing or coercing the sailors into the water, what's the easiest method being them getting the entire crew to beach the ship on the rocks, which would make the ship sink. It may seem from a simplified perspective, that doing something like removing their tongues would be the same as removing the cyclops's eye, but comparing their methods of attack, they are drastically different in how they would be affected by the loss of whatever organ was removed from them.
@paoloconti1999
@paoloconti1999 Месяц назад
To me, killing the siren is the correct choice. It is the ruthlessness mentioned by poseidon and a way to get rid of a potential threat like athena would do. The problem here is the method Odysseus chose to kill them, instead of killing them swiftly, putting them out of mercy opted for the most brutal and painful death. Leaving them alive after removing a part of their bodies would result in the same outcome of Polyphemus asking for revenge to his father or them suffering for no reason until they starve to death
@leafydoesedits3266
@leafydoesedits3266 Месяц назад
@@linus8380 I feel like this slightly misses the point that the "Worst possible punishment" was indeed drowning a fish. The second worst, obviously, would be to let them die slowly of starvation because they can't sing anymore but Sirens still eat fish and can trick humans without singing even if it takes more effort they naturally look more humanoid than most beasts. Letting them live was all around a bad idea, especially given them being sea creatures who could very well report his actions to Poseidon the second he left who would most CERTAINLY have killed them all. Do you really think them struggling and losing half their food resources for a bit till they can learn to cope with their new weaknesses and become a threat again is a valid answer? No, you cut the fish's tail, drop it back in the water, and when it sinks to the sea floor and its gills fill with sand while it writhes, it'll realize you're the monster. Not them.
@linus8380
@linus8380 Месяц назад
@@leafydoesedits3266 I think you're underestimating how devastating losing their voices would be, that is by far the primary method of hunting for them, due to the magical nature of their voices. If you get rid of that, it is so much more complicated for them to ever hunt, namely due to how they need to be in line of sight, and without any magical allure, any sailor with half a brain will know what they are and kill them. Also, Poseidon was already still on their tail and they just found out information about how to get out of his gaze for a short bit, there's nothing they could have done to worsen their situation at that moment. And as for them drowning, it was a needlessly cruel method. Whilst still being astoundingly inefficient, considering how lopping off their tails would have left less of an effective message then removing their tongues, or what have you. Removing their tails makes it so that they will just drown, but if you remove their tongues they will slowly be hunted by the very prey they hunted
