I remember seeing in another comment section of a Scylla animatic how Scylla doesn't like to attack other monsters because she sees them as kin, so seeing Scylla approach Odysseus so closely without him giving her a frightened reaction probably makes her believe that they truly are the same as each other despite appearances
I find it weird he knew the EXACT amount of people needed for said sacrifice but it seems like Scylla was willing to expect 6 people for passage@@leotamer5
@@Ella-cd1qt It was one for each her monster heads. In the original, I am pretty sure it was entirely a matter of she just had her mouth full. But I feel like one sacrifice per one head also just works.
Your Scylla is more...human. She's not just a mindless monster that finds joy in killing these men. Her design an movement actually makes it feel like it's something she has to do. And her talking to Ody directly is just bone chilling.
I mean, in the original myth she was still a beautiful nymph from the waist up, and had her legs transformed into six dogs' heads; of course, in the original she was right next to Charybdis, and Odysseus was able to cut off two of her heads as they passed
check out gigi's animation, maybe also not accurate to the original myth, but probably fits the vibe best, and there is nice transition between Scylla's ''calm'' and ''action'' state and back
I really deeply LOVE the way Scylla actually follows Oddyseus and looks him in the eyes while they harmonize, and then sees him off out of the cave. It adds a different level of their connection being personal , of them really thinking the same. And also sets it up later for the next song, when Eurylochus is begging for Oddyseus to try and gaslight him now given how he has just seen him harmonizing with Scylla.
The guy crying as he saved Eurylochus was an absolutely perfect touch and I care for that nameless crew member immensely as a result. He knew what he was doing and as hard as it was, he made the decision to save him.
2:28 This part brought me to tears. The fact that one of their men was willing to protect Eurolychus only to get eaten is devastating. It makes his outrage at Ody for sacrificing 6 men a lot more personal. Fantastic animatic.
One thing I've not really seen discussed about this song is Scylla's whole screed at the end, while horrific and can obviously be taken as a threat, it's very easy to read it as everything she had to tell herself given her transformation from nymph to monster at the hands of Circe. That whole backstory being explained wouldn't work well in EPIC, but the song only gets better with that context. Its why I really like this animatic. Because not only is scylla horrific and terrifying, but it seems like she legitimately found a kindred spirit in Odysseus. Someone forced to become a monster to survive. Someone who understands the pain of living with the horrific things you have to do or else you die.
Oh I absolutely love the detail of her looking right at Odysseus when telling him they're the same and he just looks back with no fear... showing she was fully aware he made sacrifices to her to be granted passage by feeding her... and her showing she was only letting him go as a result because with this take- she could have grabbed him last second. Ruthlessness earned her respect...
Your Scylla design is phenomenal, and the look on Eurylocus's face as he's standing there holding a torch realising what Odysseus has done only to get shoved out of the way at the last moment is just *chefs kiss*
One of my friends is also into epic and we both think that the person who shoves him our of the way in mist animatics or who he gave a torch to was his lover
Something I really love about this animatic is that each death seems to mostly be tried to each scream in the song. For those who don’t know, six screams can be heard in the song at different times after Scylla appears, one for each man that was sacrificed to Scylla.
having odysseus and scylla that close,, both staring straight into their souls of each other... it gives it such a raw and intimidating touch. nice work!
"For Scylla is not mortal; moreover she is savage, extreme, rude, cruel and invincible. There is no help for it; your best chance will be to get by her as fast as ever you can, for if you dawdle about her rock while you are putting on your armor, she may catch you with a second cast of her six heads, and snap up another half dozen of your men; so drive your ship past her at full speed, and roar out lustily to Krataiis who is Scylla's dam (father), bad luck to her; she will then stop her from making a second raid upon you." I love the idea of one immortal calling another immortal 'rude and invincible.'
It's very likely that Scylla was a sea current - that's why no amount of fighting would help anyone with it, the only chance was to get past it as fast as possible.
The synchronizing of the screams with the crew getting eaten, Eurylochus being saved by a fellow crewman and realizing Scylla was going for the torches was amazing But the cherry on top was the Face to face of Scylla acknowledge the Captain, Odysseus, for giving sacrifices to survive 🎉🎉🎉
I love Scylla in this animatic. That knowing look that she gives Odysseus as if to say, "I know what you did here and I could devour you too, but you sacrificed those men to feed me. You are a monster of the same sort as me, but a different form, so out of respect, im going to let you go safely from here because we both do what it takes to survive." This song and animatic is simply BRILLIANT!
This made me realize, Odysseus ask Eurylacus to light the torches after Eury says he was the one who opened the bag Most animations show him making the torches and then giving them out then he hands the final torch to someone else But I just realized realistically speaking you would hold the last torch (like what you drew here), Odysseus knew that there was a big chance Eury wouldn't make it out
I mean, he might have had someone else do it before that. But that betrayal by his second in command is what doomed them to so much pain and misery. I'd of considered it justified. And the Greek gods were much more blood thirsty than I.
Dude he realy wanted to get rid at all cost of Eurylochus, after all thanks to him his whole crew blames him on the Underworld from their deads, honestly I would do that too in Ody's place
One of the scariest Scyllas yet, fantastic job! She feels super imposing as well. I love your choice of having Scylla get so close to Odysseus, it really drives home the theme of Odysseus having become a monster, as Scylla is said not to attack other monsters.
can we talk about the moment when Eurylochus notices that only those holding the torches are getting eaten and he looks at the torch in his hand and looks to Monster Ody for help or any sign of kindness, despair, or lack of knowledge and finds nothing but his back turned to them. . it makes the betrayal of Eurylochus deeper in 'Mutiny'.
I adore this version of Scylla because it references that she was a beautiful maiden before Circe and her heads are her own heads. I also like the fins imitating hair. And I just adore the last part where Scylla stares at Odysseus and he coldly stares back as if there’s this understanding between them. Genuinely you’re one of my favorite animators.
In all the animatics of the Scylla song, I think the most touching part is seeing the soldiers get snatched. But in your version, the 2:03 moment when we get to see victim's point of view, the helpless hand? *chef's kiss* masterpiece
I love how at the start of the harmony, it’s staged as if she’s sympathizing with the crew, but no. She sympathizes with their captain who was betrayed by their greed and faithlessness. This is just Hell coming to pay back the debt of blood they now owe. It’s not like he wanted to do this. He’s just doing what it takes to survive.
I actually *adore* your Odysseus design. He looks like a man who could withstand physically straining activity that is fighting under Troy & sailing across many lands. He looks like an actual king of Ithaca, I love that :) Your decision to have Eurylochus kneel when he apologizes is also so... touching? Like yeah they're brothers-in-law and comrades but Odysseus is still a king to everyone on that boat. Great animatic!
That final passing look between Scylla and Ody, like acknowledging the sacrifices provided and how she watched how almost carefree or at least uncaring how he sacrificed them. And eurylichus recognizing that going into mutiny was perfect.
Okay yeah. This is easily my favorite version for the ending. When Eurylachus realizes what's going on...and all he can do is stare at Odysseus in shock and betrayal... He couldn't even drop the torch. 😢 Someone had to save him instead! And the boat rowing past Scylla as she comes eye to eye with an unmoving Odysseus, facing each other in acknowledgement as they pass. Wow 😮 I also like how he's basically a shadowed figure during the entire attack. It really emphasizes how he's... responsible for it? At one frame it even looked like, as the heads began to attack, that *HE* was the monster. Anyway, brilliant, simply brilliant 🎉
Also, this is the first one that made me think... What if he hadn't decided on it. In this animatic it makes it look like he was hesitant, but then decided on it only after that revelation was made. And the other ones it kind of made it look like he was... Trying to keep his plan under wraps? But this one it looked more like he initially had doubts... *and then he got rid of them.*
This is the first animatic ive seen of this song where Scylla genuinely unsettled me, your design for her is incredible. And idk how, but you managed to also make her *feel* massive. Like, the frame with her looming over the boat before she goes for Eurylochus? Really sold me on the fact that not even the Gods like to mess with her 😭
This is definitely my favourite interpretation of the whole "Eurylochus holding a torch" issue that these animatics deal with. Makes sense for someone to dive in front of him given how much the crew respect and trust Eurylochus. Very cool and such great art! Well done and thanks 🙂
i have to say out of all the animation i've seen your Odysseus is the most gangster . My man stays still while Scylla eats his man AND THEN HE LOOKS HER IN THE EYES. This Ody is a menace.
Syclla always has been described as ugly and a terrifying monster, I was sick of people making her as a pretty lady on the upper part this is the best design I've seen for her
Honestly, as a woman of strange tastes, my brain is still simultaneously registering her as terrifying and beautiful and is confused as to which should take precedence over the other lol In all honesty though, I do agree that the more accurate version is absolutely stunning!
actually scylla in the original myth was a beauty but she was turned into a monster by cirice out of jealousy. she is described as a monster, but only the waist down even if you were to look at ancient greek art depictions of her her human half is not what one would call ugly.
I honestly love the favt that you had Scylla follow the boat and stay to the side of said boat and sing to him " you are the same you and i" part god that feels like something that the real scylla would do.
Yours is the quite possibly the most perfect version on Scylla. I see the nymph she was and the monster she's become in every aspect of her design. Simply sublime.
This is my favorite Scylla design. She looks amazingly horrifying. Some myths say Circe turned her unto a monster so no one would love her. I feel this design captures that. So cool
I honestly love the idea of Eury not having the "drop the torch while saving someone else" but instead being saved. It's executed so fucking well, good job
I think this is the first animatic I've seen so far that actually focuses on Scylla's main face outside of the reveal and maybe the shared line with Odysseus. Very cool.
STOP. In all the others I’ve seen, someone picks up the torch after Eury, but in yours he hasn’t dropped it yet, and when he’s about to it’s already close to late and someone else pushes him out of the way, being eaten themselves. And he looked so happy to save someone too OMGG (I don’t know if I saw right so apologies if I didn’t)
The fact that as the other heads are shown, before Odysseus says "RUN FOR YOUR LIVES" as the ca!era pans out to show scylla with the 6 heads with her picking at her nail, its like she's saying "You know what comes next, Odyseus." While staring him down, LOVE IT
Ok i love this version of scylla!!! The way she gets up from the water is SO GOOD!!! Her mouth!!! And the other heads being similar to her own but not quite is so cool. I love how shes moving and singing to the crew here. When she wraps her arms on the ship is so good!! And her real head takes the final man!!! Such good details!! E figuring out its the torches and dropping it only for one of the crew to save him is a nice touch too. Ouch that hurt. This is one of my fav versions of it so far
This is absolutely the most terrifying version of Scylla I’ve seen yet. Even the woman floating in the water is terrifying, and then this thing with six heads and a body pops up? Most of the time, she’s a beautiful woman, which I can get behind, but this is an entirely new approach and I love it
Strange compliment, but I love the way you animated the motions of the heads swooping. There’s something really eerie about the wiggling, and then it’s like she’s very all up on the boat all the time, not just swooping from a distance. Like she could just pull down the whole boat if she wanted to. I’m sure you know everything else is awesome lol
When i say this is probably my fav animatic from the design of scylla to the way she just respects ody for feeding her which leads into mutiny just 🤌🏼 chefs kiss
When i first heard this song. I always imagined him debating on sacrificing his men. Till Eurolychus told him he open the bag. Then that just reinforced him to sacrifice them.
@@curseddragonninja22idk I mean he knew he would have to sacrifice six people when he was told about this route. He was going to sacrifice them no matter what especially cuz he can’t take no more of not seeing his wife he is willing to do anything.
I love how you make the heads bite right when the screams in the song happens. Not everyone does that so I really appreciate it when it does happen. And oh my god, how that one guy pushes euryclise aside, sacrificing himself is so amazing my mouth fell open
Ok but the colours?? The textures? Also the fact that Scylla looks like something straight out of a Junji Ito story, this is beautifully horrifying omg. Especially at 2:04 where we're in the perspective of one of the men being eaten, such a cool detail!
Bro the detail of Scylla approaching Eurylochus from behind to then get shoved out of the way was very cool. It was terrifying to see scylla from behind, specially in your design.
Okay I love how monstrous she looks also Eurylochus slowly putting things together and almost getting eaten only to get pushed out of the way by a crew member. Great stuff!
He isn't scared of Scylla. She just happens to live next to his cursed daughter and he out of grief doesn't go there. Altho there is a myth where she was his lover and his wife turned her into monster.
I absolutely love your take on the ending. I've never seen someone depict Scylla as looking directly at Odysseus and Odysseus acknowledging what she is saying directly back. I LOVE it! In all the other videos I've seen, Ody has acknowledged the similarity, but there was never an obvious/direct moment of agreement/acknowledgement between the two.
My favorite version of 1) Scylla design (actual eldritch abomination) 2) Scylla’s connection to Odysseus. Him being forced to acknowledge her as if she’s a mirror into his soul
1:42 Of all the designs I've seen from Escila, this one is definitely in my top 10 2:32 In other animations I see that Eurylochus gives the torch to his friend and realizes the truth too late and sees how his friend dies. But seeing how that friend sacrifices himself makes it more painful. 2:43 The way they look, my god, it was epic!
She's seen this too many times. The akward silence, guilty confessions in the cover of night. Its like shes watching a show and calling out the tropes.
Love how scary Scylla is! Love Eurylochus crying and Odysseus little laugh and Pat as if forgiving Eurylochus before solidifying the decision to sacrifice the crewmen. And Eurylochus crying for real and really hard after the it hers died. Thanks for the animatic!!
This absolutely has won the spot in my Best Animatics playlist. I've been waiting for so long for a Scylla animatic that hit all my boxes, and it has finally arrived! 1. Design. I LOVE how you did Scylla. Clearly inhuman, but still enough human to speak with Odysseus and be creepy. An issue that has plagued a lot of other Scylla animatics is that the heads look more derpy than horrifying, but your heads's sharp teeth and pitch-black eyes won me over and also scared me. Well done! 2. The Torches. Not only did you clearly show how Odysseus sacrificed his men with the torches, but you also showed Eurylochus's realization really well! Plus, your take on how Eurylochus barely survived was something I had never seen before, and really cool/heartbreaking. 3. Oddyseus. My goodness. Your interpretation leaves no room for beliefs that Oddyseus didn't know what would happen. We see him watching, and then we see him SPEAK FACE-TO-FACE with Scylla. chef's kiss
I like that not only Eury realized the torches were attracting Scylla's other heads. And the man who saved Eury 😭 Dude wanted to abandon 43 men on Circe's island but maybe that last crew member dying FOR HIM made him change his heart.
No, you got it wrong. He went with 7 or so men to look around island. Other stayed with Odysseus. He literally said in song: Think about the men we have before there a none. Also, the only reason why Odysseus won against Circe was thanks to Hermes. Sorry for my garbage English
This is THE most unique rendition of Scylla I've seen. also, notice how right before the screen cuts to the separate heads moving, the main head (the woman head) moves, which leaves me to believe the min head controls them. Also also, in the end. The main head is seen swallowing something, which makes me thing the other heads give HER the food and their just the ones who immobilize the food.
I like how the 6 heads look human but are definitely as far from humans as you can get. Britt for sure looked up different ways to make monsters absolutely terrifying😭😭
This was the most horrifying scilla design I've seen! And eurylochus's horrified realizationn About the torches before being pushed out of the way amazing!!!!!
This song produced so many amazing designs for Scylla, a monster that is usually hard to visualize and didn't get a lot of love from artists before. Love yours in particular!
My iriginal favorite was gigi's, but this one blew it out of tge water. The split down the cheeks, each head looking like a human woman before their maws open, perfectly terrifying.
Damn! While I love all the designs for Scylla Ive seen so far, this one is probably the most unique! Got that snakey vibe Also I really liked the touch of having a crewmember push Euroylucus out of the way. Its cool how most representations show that Euroylichus directly having to watch at least one crewman die in most animatics, showing why he is so pissed at Oddesyus.
LOVE IT! It's the first animation I see that really shows Scylla has a terrifiyng monster, rather than some pretty lady with 6 heads out of nowhere. Also the synchronization for the movements of the mouth are GREAT!
I like that you focus on ody at the feeling betrayed lyric because other animations always pan the crew like he betrayed the crew but actually ody is feeling mass betrayal because eury is admitting he is the reason they didn’t make it home when they were so close. He couldn’t trust his king, his captain and his commander even though as his second he’s supposed to be the one who trusts him the most. Ody is forced to accept that his most trusted and his crew have already betrayed him and don’t trust him. Even through this revelation ody hardens his heart and feels less guilt about sacrificing 6 men to get through Scylla. The biggest thing here is even if ody tried and succeeded in killing Scylla he still would have died because Charybdis would kill him in exchange. Poseidon’s not afraid of Scyllas lair he’s afraid of Charybdis. There is no stories of Charybdis tho so no man knows about her all they know is that anyone who goes through Scylla doesn’t return. In the first place the only reason Charybdis would have let ody and his men pass would have been to ensure Scylla eats. So like either way he was mega screwed.
Dude, if my captain looked the monster that just killed 6 of our friends dead in the eyes AND HARMONIZED WITH THEM. Then I would have staged a mutiny too. (This animatic for Scylla is probably one of my favorites btw. While it doesn't have the snappiness like others I've seen. I really feel the weight of the movements in this one, plus the way Scylla's size dominates any frame she is in is absolutely breathtaking.)
Well I’m gonna have nightmares. Also love that one section where the POV switched to one of the crew members getting dragged off the side. Chills right there 💀
The way Eurylochus gets on his knees to beg for forgiveness and Odysseus just walks away, seeming to either briefly pat Eurylochus’s shoulder or make the motion to do so and pulling his hand back before he could make contact? And Odysseus later coming up to him and placing his hand on his shoulder in a gesture that could look like forgiveness, except he asks Eurylochus to light the torches and Eurylochus has one as well so it was actually Odysseus trying to sacrifice Eurylochus to Scylla? I’m in love. And then Eurylochus is only spared because another sailor shoves him out the way, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else do that before. It really gives another layer to the mutiny and how another member of the crew stabs Odysseus to save Eurylochus because now we have Eurylochus who knows not only that Odysseus planned to sacrifice six men, but one of those dead six lost their life saving Eurylochus. Also, I’m not sure if it’s my eyesight or not, but I thought the one who saved Eurylochus looked an awful lot like Odysseus himself. At first glance, I thought it was Odysseus and he changed his kind when truly confronted with Eurylochus’s death, but it was not.
Well that's thr most terrifying Scylla I've seen... thanks for the new sleep paralysis demon template. My therapy bills not withstanding, this was outstanding. Having Ody touch Eury after his confession makes Ody's betrayal hit harder. I also liked that you have Ody watching what was happening rather than having his back to it. I REALLY liked that deep breath he took, like he was steeling himself. And Eury putting it all together just to be pushed out of the way by the 6th guy... This sets the emotional stakes doe Eury and Ody beautifully for Mutiny. Wonderful, wonderful job
Your version of Scylla is atrocious and horrible and AMAZING!!!! I legit felt a cold chill throughout my body when she lifted her heads 😱 well done, I hope Jorge sees this❤❤❤
I just realized, Eury wasn't pissed that Ody sacrificed 6 of their friends to Scylla. He was pissed cuz he was one of the sacrifice. Very hilarious considering he did not hesitate leaving all their "friends" behind to be roasted pork in Circe's island. I think the animation captured that though I'm not sure if that's intentional.
He actully was. Also, what was Eurylochous supposed to do with how powerful sorcerer Circe is? The only reason why Odysseus won was thanks to Hermes. Sides, he said in song: "Think about the men we have before there are none" He didnt want to abandon the crew, but they were lost cause.
Well it alot worse then that, Ody made Eury unknowingly pick the 5 other dudes to be sacrificed. He made Eury choose. Second Eury ends up passing his touch of to someone else doing the confusion of the attack, before Eury realise what his brother-in-law, childhood friend, and his king just attempted to do him. So Ody just served him with a heavy dose of survival guilt and fresh betrayal. Yeah, at that point it's clear that Ody isen't in the mindset to lead anymore. And still while Ody attempted to kill Eury, he never tried the reserve, even when he had all the power to do so after the mutiniy.
Just realised Scylla snaps that guy in half at 2:18 - 2:20 the second head doesn't have blood on it at first then bites down on the guy hanging out the other mouth. True horror
I haven't seen many Scylla animatics/animations yet, but out of all the ones I have seen, I really feel like this one does one of the best jobs at capturing the full scope of just how truly *horrifying* this moment is
This is by far the best Scylla design/animatic I've seen. Absolutely wonderful. Brava. You n SEE Eurylocus putting the pieces together, and- in this particular animatic- understand that Odysseus was willing to let Eurylochus be one of those six sacrifices (because he admitted to opening the wind bag?) and the visceral betrayal leading to the mutiny. Phenomenal, BPP. 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻
