In this video, I show you how to get different headers on different pages in Microsoft Word. Sometimes, you have a Word document that would look better with different headers in it. The easiest way to do that is to separate the Word document into different sections, and unlink each section from the previous one. Once you've done that, you can add different headers to each section of the document!

True you edit the whole doc yourself then all of a sudden it wants to do its own thing. It's annoying as fk.

I have been trying to get my book paginated correctly for over a week by people who claimed to be experts at it. All of them failed. I tried to do it myself today and it took me nearly 10 hours to get the headers right (different chapter headers with no headers on chapter pages) until I saw your video. Thank you very much for this man. You are a life saver. I pray many blessings upon you. Now, I have to try to figure out how to put the page numbers throughout the document without having them on the Chapter pages as well. Wish me luck.

You sir are a hero to students. Also, to those who have the Page Layout -> Breaks section greyed out, simply go out of Header/Footer and click back on the body of the page.

You have to insert page break and unlink for each page. Not just once.

@@sl8138 You have to insert Pgae Section break ( not a page break) for each section where you want a different header / footer. Navigate to this through Layout -> Breaks -> Section Breaks -> Next Page. Simpler method to do is that via search option in word (type insert page section break). HTH

I have a different version of Word and the menu items are not the same but it worked - thank you! The tricky part was in the beginning - which you showed very quickly - getting OUT of the header section to the body of the paper to make the section break. Then it works.

Every one is making silly jokes, but this is actually used to separate different kinds of chapter so you'd have a sort of title at each chapter of the book or whatever it is. It is like instead of having only one header for a word you can have two or more or just one, its is actually very genius to figure this out.

I can't believe I went through college, two degrees, and wrote countless 25-page essays and 100-page reports but I didn't know how to "unlink to previous" header. Thank you!! Although I would argue it makes zero sense to have it overwrite all headers by default, Microsoft.. :P
