"DIFFERENT" LOCKER (Brake Line Lock) - Technology used for drag racing applied to off-road

I didn't think an AWD was capable of driving up "difficult" 4WD terrain. I've been chatting with a Legendary Honda Tuner, known as E-MAN, for quite some time. He's had this idea to implement technology that he uses in drag racing and apply it to an off-road application. BTW, He's held records for quickest 8th and 9th gen Honda Civics, and one of the FK Civic Type R he built is capable of doing the quarter mile in 10 seconds and is working on bringing that time to 9 seconds. He's very respected in the import drag racing scene. He said they use something called a "line locker", and this helps momentarily lock wheels to assist with doing burn outs to warm up there tires before a run. A "line locker" also is used as LAUNCH CONTROL. So, E-MAN applied "line lock" technology to be used in an off-road application.
This isn't the first time this has been done. Custom buggy crawlers always had the ability to brake individual wheels. This tech has been around for decades, it's just that no one (to my knowledge) has tried to use solenoids to lock brake pressure. What I witnessed was unbelievable. I would have never imagined I would be able to drive up steep, rutted and loose terrain with a front wheel in the air! This would be game changing for open differential systems, especially ones that only pulsate a wheel with no traction.
In this video, the brake line lock is applied to a very worthy AWD vehicle, an iVTM4 equipped 2020 Ridgeline. It has a 20.4:1 crawl ratio (same gearing as a Toyota Tacoma in 4LO 2nd gear), a good torque converter that is not prone to stalling, and 280HP/262TQ with a 11.5:1 compression ratio. The only glaring weakness of this AWD platform is the open front differential. See how this "Brake Line Locker Mod" greatly increases capability!
There's a few things that I didn't go over in this video. I really wanted to end the video with some closing words, but I was trying to hit a RU-vid 1 week deadline. I simply ran out of time. I wanted to say that I personally don't know how effective this mod would work on other platforms. A lot of my Subaru friends want to know how this mod would perform on their vehicles, and I just don't know. I also have friends with CRVs that want this system, and again, I also don't know how effective it would be, but the good thing is that the ABS modules in the midsized Hondas are similar (maybe even the same) as the CRV/HRV.
I'm really big on making sure I don't "OVER SENSATIONALIZE" the capabilities of an AWD platform. I wanted to end the video with showing you how easily a Toyota 4runner TRD PRO would climb the steep rutted hill in 4LO. With all the flex from a solid rear axle and body on frame construction, the wheels don't even go up in the air. The formidable deep ruts you saw in this video are still within the articulation limits of a 4runner, so it would never break traction. So why not buy a 4runner? Because I find the onroad driving dynamics unsatisfactory. That's my personal preference.

Yeah, body on frame / solid rear axle vehicles will flex through these deep ruts like a champ. The driver of the Ridgeline attempted these ruts without his line lock system and wasn’t able to make it up, Atleast not intentionally driving into the ruts. I have a friend with a Honda Pilot that got up by straddling as much as he could and using momentum. The BALLS system is a game changer! I now have the system in my Honda Passport and have driven up a few obstacles that I thought I had zero chance with.

When I saw this post I honestly thought someone hacked the rear diff and forced it into locking as much as it can. This is pretty sweet though and really highlights how important a front traction aid really is. People think because the rear handles more torque that it's what matters but in reality it has more weight to force the rear suspension down and typically gets good traction while the front is unloaded and cannot generate much torque due to the spinning wheel limiting the open-diff's ability to transfer it.

Eman made me realized that if Honda just used a more robust traction control system, the Passport would be much more capable. If the new Honda trailsport has a better brake vectoring system with the Honda 10 automatic AT, and that’s all is offered…. I wouldn’t even be that mad 😂. I won’t even be surprised if that’s all that done. It makes a big difference. From what I saw, this might help me take on some level 5 trails. I seriously don’t want to up the difficulty. Super interesting! Technology like this would be super useful for people that love their AWD vehicles. I love it =) You are right the Passport and Ridgeline have much better on-road dynamics (and gas mileage) compared to the 4runner as do most AWD vehicles That said the Limited 4runner has less tip and dive and body roll than the other trims of 4runner with the Xreas suspension. My wife made me get the limited trim as she got motion sickness. As with everything thing the trade off is it's harder to lift and approach angles and departure angles are a tiny bit less.

I am so happy to see this video after watching your IG videos a million times. Very effective solution to a simple problem. I was thinking about how nice it would have been with a front LSD in conjunction with the rear diff on this platform, and then your video popped! I suspect Honda is very seriously looking at traction control/brake based solutions to improve the next gen platform’s capabilities. I don’t think these have any of it because ultimately, Honda tends to lock in the design of the basic platform and then typically doesn’t add or change much. When the current gen Pilot would have been locked back in 2014 or so, they probably had no idea the “soft roading” craze was coming. Much like the out of date infotainment, they just didn’t change it much. I hope they add some front traction aids of some sort on the Trail Sport editions going forward.
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 2 года назад
The only issue with the iVTM4 platform is the front open diff. I always wondered if Honda might be able to implement a front twin clutch diff. I think that would be an extremely capable system. But, if all honda does is beefs up the brake vectoring system to put it on par with Toyotas A-trac then I wouldn’t even be mad 😂
@PatrickRich
@PatrickRich 2 года назад
im conflicted. As others have said, its an old trick for off-roaders because it works...but I'm a little sketched out about it being sold for highway vehicles. The reason OE's don't do this is because its a bag of liabilities. Too few safeguards, too high of consequences. There are ways an OE could do this more safely - increase brake line pressure on corners that have topped out, but only below 10 mph and only in 1st gear as an example. I've also seen Subaru owners do this with the parking brake, by splitting it out into 2 different parking brake handles, but since the parking brake is a mechanical secondary brake system you don't have to mess with the factory stuff and its a lot safer. When it comes to mods, I draw the line at my brake hydraulics.
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 2 года назад
I appreciate you chiming in Patrick! So, I had alot of concerns about this system. You’ll see in the early design there was no “kill switch”. That terrified me. The new iteration has the main switch now. Also, if the unit fails, it fails OPEN. If there’s any problems with leaking, I’d just bypass the solenoid. This mod will only be for the “EXPERIENCED”. If used incorrectly, it can be very dangerous. So, I’ll be offroading about 300 miles through South East Utah in 2 days (for about a week). It’ll be a good test!

@@JonDZ_Adventuring This looks like it will work better on Subaru TR580s; mainly on the Forester Wilderness' and Crosstrek Sport/Limited with the 2.5L engine. They both have adequate torque, with the most aggressive "1st gear ratio" above the rest at 4.07:1. Even more than the OB Wilderness. As you've already noticed, I have a TORQ locker installed so this will definitely be advantageous for me. I currently use X-Mode and it works well, however, it's not perfect. It has to sense wheel spin in order for it to transfer torque to the wheel that isnt free spinning. With B.A.L.L.S, I'd would be able to actuate the solenoids on demand without allowing the traction control to figure it out. I can already see the TR690s from the Outback Onyx/Wilderness and Ascent failing because they have a tendency to stall way more than TR580s. You've seen it first hand.

@@JonDZ_Adventuring Correct, and the OBW's 1st gear is only 3.490:1. The '21 Crosstrek Sport, which I have, shares the same 2.5L engine and TR580 transmission as the Forester Wilderness, except it has a 3.7:1 final drive, as opposed to 4.11:1. The FW also has an upgraded X-Mode that can stay engaged past 25mph (which I don't care for) and a CVT cooler that bumps towing capacity up some. That's it. I've never seen an Outback Wilderness do anything remotely crazy as I have on my Crosstrek. All I've seen the OBW do is stall, stall, and stall. Quite disappointing for a CUV that Subaru markets as a flagship outdoor model.

I really like the SHAWD system on my wife’s MDX, I think that Honda has the best AWD system out there right now (coming from a ZR2 owner). My question is, do you see the transmission temps raise alot?, I have seen other channels that after time the transmission will run hot and they need to shut the truck down until it cools. This happens mostly on longer obstacles and or longer duration of climbing. Regardless very impressed with what he came up with! Great vid👍
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 2 года назад
That’s on the Honda 6AT equipped iVTM4 vehicles. They only have a 14.3:1 crawl ratio. The ZF9 or HONDA/Acura 10AT equipped vehicles have a 20.4:1 and 22.4:1 crawl ratio, which is class leading.

My trans temps where fine during all the obstacles we tried and I’ve never seen the awd system to hot messages come on which many channels confuse with the trans over heating lol. This BALLS system should prevent the hot messages for the diff since it’s making it spin less

@derrickdrew17

I bet that Transmission was getting hot
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 6 месяцев назад
It didn't. With the ZF9 transmission and a 4.334 final drive, it isn't stressful. It's like a Toyota driving up in 4Lo 2nd gear. Coincidentally, we just got back from another trip out to the offroad park. The obstacles are even more rutted out, and he did them all. It was hilarious, he drove up a new obstacle wall that's about anywhere between 50 to 60 degrees (maybe more). It was too steep for the Jeeps to crawl, they would just slide back down. The Ridgeline climbed up at a constant half throttle and got up.
@mzbikesandcars
@mzbikesandcars 2 года назад
Pretty cool! As the Ridgeline becomes more capable, does the transmission start to get hot? Any plans for an additional cooler? Seems like a good investment with some slower speed high torque application.
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 2 года назад
Mounting taller tires will make the transmission fluids get hotter. With my 2.5” taller tires, The 20.4:1 crawl ratio drops to 18.7:1, which is still class leading for an AWD, but 32.1” tires is also class leading 😃. All Ridgelines have an OEM transmission cooler, but they don’t have a puller fan in front, so adding one will make a huge difference. The ZF9 equipped Hondas are not prone to an overheated transmission though. It will take a lot of abuse to get It hot.

He said that CVT Subarus already are able to brake lock 2 wheels but the torque converter stalls out, so he’s worried that if this system was used, it might not be effective. Hey Jon, really enjoy your vids,leaning toward the Ridgeline. Am hoping for Honda to offer a Trail Sport version for ‘23, like it’s interior. Bummer that a factory built more off roader version won’t happen till 2024. Thought I read that Honda has a new platform coming out. Was wondering if you have looked at Flatout Suspension? Also was curious if you knew if there is a clear version of the Avery film. Regarding the front brake line locking system, maybe a light in the center to indicate that the system has been engaged, still keeping the left and right lights. Just a thought.

I had a friend that purchased the flat out suspension kit, but it didn’t fit, so I do not have any confidence in the product. My friend put them on blast on social media (which wasn’t the nicest then thing to do), and the response by flatout suspension was disappointing (they played victim). I don’t know one single person that runs the flatout kit on the current midsized Honda platform.

Nice stuff here! So each of the actuators is only tuned to apply enough brake pressure to not "lock" the individual front wheel completely but enough to assist the traction control further?
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 2 года назад
The brake pressure is manually set during left foot braking. Just press the button at the desired brake pressure. For example, you can lightly press the brake pedal and then lock the driver wheel at, let’s say 10%, and then you can press the brake harder and lock the passenger brake at 75%. Then all you have to do is drive over the obstacle. Once you’re over the obstacle disengage. This mod should only be used by people that have an understanding about it. For the iVTM4 HONDA application, it solves it’s one glaring weakness, the open front differential.
