Great video! I feel so fortunate to have an existing relationship with an amazing editor. While I do refer my friends to her, I’m also very careful as I don’t want to expose her to completely unprofessional people. You see a lot of complaining among beginning writers about how expensive editors are but good ones are worth every penny and work very hard for their money. Nobody is entitled to a cheap editor. I know not everyone has a lot of money but if you’re serious about putting out a professional book then you need professionals wherever you’re not that professional. My editor keeps a light hand with me and is quick because I don’t require as much but I still need her eyes. I’m an artist but I still paid an illustrator and a cover designer because while I know what I want, I don’t have the knowledge or skills to execute them to a professional level. All these things cost money. Art and editing are very important. Do it shabbily and there goes the reader. So I have to say that one way to not get a good editor is to complain about how much they cost on social media. When I follow these threads, inevitably, you’ll get these “editors” who will come on with these huge error-riddled posts telling everyone that those “other” editors charge too much because the most they would charge for an edit is $50 or whatever-because they just “love” their work. RUN!!!
@nikkiguerlain
@nikkiguerlain 5 лет назад
Raymond Caylor cheers! Those numbers are very reasonable! The cover doesn’t seem expensive at all. I’m also paying for formatting. I’m paying $1100 for 10 short novels and a 10 book box set to be formatted. I consider hiring professionals an investment that allows me to do what I do best-write. Self pub doesn’t mean unprofessional, it means you’re not leaving all the decisions to someone else-you’re making sure shit gets done right.

This is really a great point, Nikki! A great editor is definitely worth the money. And it does help if you learn how to self-edit to the best of your ability so that you don't need extensive edits in the first place.

Hi Sarra - so I'm a professional editor who watches your channel mainly for the planning/organisation tips and notebook challenges, but this video caught my eye and I was curious about what you'd have to say about my profession :-) I mostly edit non-fiction at both a structural (developmental) and copy (line) level, although I've also line-edited one novel. I've worked on around 18 books total now for authors around the globe, including two Hay House authors - and I totally agree with most of what you tell your viewers in this video. The one thing I'd query though is your comment about professionals *always* charging a flat, per word rate. I've found that the quality of the manuscripts I get from an author can vary wildly - a 70k manuscript from one author who's already polished it a lot themselves might take me 20 hours to edit, while the exact same length from someone else who's effectively sent me their second (or worse, first!) draft might take me 50 hours. Because of this, I always offer to do a free 3-page sample edit before I give a hard quote. That way I can name a fair, accurate price up front based on the amount of work the m/s will take, and the author can see whether or not they like my editing style before they put down any money. So absolutely, wordcount is important... but it's not the only thing I base my quote on.
@tanjagardner285
@tanjagardner285 5 лет назад
Another thing I'd add that authors may not know is that there's actually no such thing as 'objectively correct or incorrect grammar or punctuation' in English (because there's no one authority on the English language the way there is, say, with French). What there is, though, is a whole set of potential style conventions - like APA, Chicago, Associated Press, MLA, etc. Something that's right according to one style convention can be wrong according to another - so for example, whether you use an Oxford/serial comma, where you put punctuation around brackets and quote marks, or whether you use an apostrophe after a name that ends in 's' can all depend on which style conventions you're using. So a good copy editor (and/or a good proofreader) will ask you if you have a preference for style conventions - and if not, they'll either tell you which one they recommend using, or they'll create an individual style guide for you from scratch that lists all the conventions they're using as part of their editing service.
@HeartBreathings
@HeartBreathings 5 лет назад
Thank you for your feedback! I'm not sure if you watched the entire video, but I do actually speak to the fact that a quote may change depending on the shape your work is in. What I do say, however, is that professional editors should give you a quote range and definitely let you know if they are going to far exceed it before they continue.
@tanjagardner285
@tanjagardner285 5 лет назад
@@HeartBreathings - I did see that, but I'd interpreted it as that you thought professional editors should give a definite wordcount-based quote up front, even if they had to later change it because of the amount of work involved. It sounds like I'd misunderstood you - my bad! But with what you've said here, I totally agree. I try to give an indicative range up front, because let's face it: if the least I can do an m/s for is twice what the author can realistically spend at this point, there's no point in going ahead with a sample edit for them. There'll be other editors out there who are a much better fit for them price-wise than I am, and that's totally fine too :-) If they're happy with the ballpark range, though, I can go ahead and do the sample edit and create a hard quote from there.
@tanjagardner285
@tanjagardner285 5 лет назад
(Also, if you'd ever like to bring your viewers an editor's perspective on how to get their manuscript into the best possible shape before it goes to an editor so that they can save themselves as much money as possible there - plus how they can make working with an editor as smooth as possible, let me know. I'd love to connect
@Artraive
@Artraive 5 лет назад
@@tanjagardner285 I'm sorry for just jumping in, but I'd very much like to know that if you are interested in sharing :) I believe tha editors are worth the money they ask because what they do in my eyes is incredible, but I also believe that an author should learn as much as he/she can of writing too. I'm sorry if my english is bad, it's not my first language, but I hope I made sense 🤗

Hi Sarra, great series. Can you give an idea how long you take to do your edits? I know many factors but a general idea would be helpful. I just need to know when to stop haha. I am putting together a calendar. I gave myself 1 mos. for each step (I am a newbie, fiction, 58k words) Cheers, Tara.

Is it possible to hire an editor to look at a novel outline (before the novel is written) to check the story structure, character arcs, plot etc.? If yes, how much does it cost and do you recommend it? :)

@MissShembre
@MissShembre 3 года назад
There are similarities, but the developmental editor will be going line by line and giving way more detailed information, like point out that something isn't working and then also give detailed feedback on ways it could be fixed. They're more like the best critique partner imaginable that you could be paired up with in a writing class (if they're doing their job right.)

How important is it to work with the same editor throughout a series? If you switch editors book to book, does it affect the final product enough to be noticed by readers? Thanks. Love your channel.
@HeartBreathings
@HeartBreathings 5 лет назад
That is a wonderful question. I have found it to be very important to keep the same editor so they can keep an eye on consistency. The editor I use also includes a "style sheet" with my edits, which is basically a list of how I write things - phrases, capitalization, and eye color, stuff like that. It's a great resource, and then she checks it against the next books, and so on, if that makes sense. I did have to switch editors around Book 7, and I ended up making the investment to have my new editor go back through the entire first six books with a fresh proofread to familiarize herself with the story. It cost some money upfront, but she did catch more errors and then knew the series from there forward.

I went with an editor on fiverr the person was given two chapters and .I know my manuscript needed help with quotation Mark's and structure when she saw it it sounded like she had an attitude every thing she said on fiverr that she said she would do she didn't want to do so she contacted me and said she has to charge me more money its extra work.

@MissShembre 3 года назад
I don't want to be mean, but judging honestly by the structure of your comment... I think you might have been unfair to judge the attitude of this editor you worked with.
