The Pit Hawaiian Kempo has an online program as well and it is very good. It’s also a belt system so you are tested on techniques for the quarter we are working on plus conditioning.

Aloha from Hawaii Mr. Dan, you've been very supportive of the art of Kenpo Karate, very admirable. Might I suggest an old school association in Hawaii named CHA-3 Kenpo Karate under founder Professor Marino Tiwanak and is currently in good hands with his son Michael Tiwanak at the helm. He was the first black belt under Adriano and Joe Emperado, as well as Woodrow McCandless back in Palama in the late 40's through mid 50's. Professor Marino Tiwanak predates most of the gentlemen you've mentioned, but no disrespect to them either. This association has been steadfast and held to the old traditional ways of training. If at all possible it'd be great for a respectful nod or mention of this storied association. Much Mahalo and Respect to you and yours.

Another Kempo School based out of Hawaii is "Universal Kempo Karate School Association". Founded by GM Martin T. Buell who studied under Adriano Emperado.

Please do a focus on Kara-Ho Kempo! There is soooo little out there, and many people don't even know it exists or that Professor Chow kept developing his kempo after Ed Parker. I know you guys have too many arts to get to, but I really think you'd be doing the martial arts community a great service by being the first/only to put the information out there. Ed Parker and Adriano Emperado both had the same teacher and both received their original black belts together.

Hi, just wanted to make you aware of Roland Roemer, one of James Mitose's named and credited instructors. He studied directly under Mitose, and also worked closely with Chuck Sullivan. He also studied directly under Remy Presas, who brought FMA/Arnis/Escrima to the US - he is pictured as the demonstration partner for most of Presas' techniques in the book "Modern Arnis." He also studied Chi Lin Gong Fu, under Dennis Decker. Roemer runs a Martial Arts school in Colorado, which has a couple branches around the country. His system is called Seizan Ryu Kempo Jujutsu, which is a 3-way blend of Mitose's, Presas's, and Decker's respective arts - covering weapons, striking, and grappling. I believe it would be worth your while to reach out to him, and hear his stories and perspectives!

Awesome, Having been in Shaolin Kempo since 1983 (I started in Fencing and Shotokan), In this program, I reached Brown Belt 3 Stripes. I then received my Black belt and 2nd BB with another program and Now 3rd. You can not talk about this school (Villari) without talking about GM Nick Cerio. Cerio trained GM Villari. GM Cerio was called, by GM Parker, "The most dangerous man he knew." Having attended seminars with GM Villari and GM Boise. While in san Diego at the Navel Training Center (A Club at the gyme) i also studied with the students of Master Narrison "Nar" Babao of the Babao Arnis System and Inosanto academy.

These videos are great, this sifu is knowledgeable, humble, and he doesn't trash other styles. I love the strength based approach to this discourse.

I had one lengthy conversation with Ed Parker back in about 1963. He said that his concept of the ideal system as "either complexity bordering on simplicity or simplicity bordering on complexity." Complexity to cover the required variety, simple to avoid confusion and bloat.

I am looking to join a Kempo school near me and thought I’d do a little research first. I have a background in Boxing, wrestling, White Crane, BJJ and Muay Thai I knew little about Kempo. I stumbled across your videos and I cannot thank you enough. I feel like I’ve taken a semester of Kempo at College. Your videos are so informative and you are so respectful of the various styles. THANKS- I'm VERY interested in this. I have a 5th degree black in kenpo too.. 4th in hapkido, 4th in aikido, black sash for wing chun and instructor in jeet kune do. I LOVE this-- things I was NOT taught or simply MISSED. I also got mashed between two trucks in 99 and am 67 and I find a LOT of my "knowledge- memories" just GONE-- so I renew through your videos and more.. THANKS AGAIN.

Doing a fantastic job here. As you said there are soooo many variations of Kenpo to try to cover them all. Okinawa Kenpo alone has the Branch from Oyata Sensei which you covered and Odo Seikichi Sensei's branch of Nakamura's organization which basically started as a competition league for Shorin-ryu practitioners. That histort alone could span several videos. Keep up the great work on the bits of information that you're putting out!

I think it's fantastic that the quote itself is so concise that it can be used in so many contexts, from martial arts to movies. The original text was about an airplane and how its design is really simple when you think about it :)

I study five animal kenpo- my instructor's own system. It's my first intro to kenpo; before this, I took tkd. I also study wing chun through the same instructor.

There are so many different kempo. I don't know if it's kempo but it goes by the name Shorinji Toraken Ryu and it founded by Ron Cherry. His sensei is Professor Albert C. Church, Jr.

Great to see you continue, the wide and vast diaspora, of the multiple, Kenpo Karate systems throughout. Hawaiian Kenpo was very interesting to me, as it is the system, that the former UFC, Lightweight Champion, Chuck Liddel hails from. I in fact remember seeing him, having on the sides of his shaved head, regarding his mohawk hairstyle, that he had clearly tattooed the word Kenpo. Of which I always wondered what specific style of Kenpo Karate, he pertains to! I am also glad that you mentioned master Larry Tatum's, Kenoo Karate involvement in this video, as aside from Grandmaster Ed Parker Snr, his son Master Ed Parker Jr, Master Jeff Speakman, Elvis Presley, Master Larry Tatum, was someone I have read about in the 1990s martial arts magazines and general collective, martial arts styles books and so forth. Lima Lama Nippon Kenpo Karate, being striking and grappling combined martial arts, really appealed to me, in this video coverage Sensei Dan, given that they are in their own right, mixed martial arts styles. Would you ever perhaps down the track, be chronicling Brazilian jiu-jitsu, then compare it to Japanese jujutsu and Judo? I think those would be very interesting to compare, in terms of their similarities, differences and in the case of Judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, how they differ from the sporting, to the traditional, self defense based styles. Ive never heard anyone pronounce KA ju KEN bo the way that you pronounce it ka JUkenbo. Just a little strange to my ears but its all good Sensei. I love your videos and have been a fan for a little while now as a KENPO practitioner myself.

Master Oyata trained my hanshi. If there is anything you need to know ask me and I'll give you the best historians. I am a brown belt in Okinawan Kempo. I was fortunate enough to visit master Oyatas gravesite and meet his family.

I have seen this video many times just for your positivity and insight Into the Martial Arts. I wish you had a school in Austin, Texas so that I could train and learn under you. I am a long time advocate of American Kenpo and learned some when I was younger and lived in El Paso. Matter of fact before I left I was starting to teach some classes to learn and be a teacher and part of the black belt team. I really miss it. Over the years I've also learned some Hapkido, mantis Kung Fu muay thai and BJJ.

I train/teach a variation of what is now called Moh Pai Kempo I think. Our lineage traces back to Olaf Simon who was based out of Alberta, Canada. Our club teach the traditional techniques/stances/kata/etc but also elements of BJJ, krav maga and kickboxing.

You should do one on Master David German of tai kenpo he was the first guy to add grappling to kenpo and help ED Parker run some of the early schools.

Hanshi Bruce Juchnik of the Sei Kosho Shorei Kai (Kosho Shorei Ryu Kempo) not only introduced the healing arts of Shiatsu/Chinese medicine to his curriculum, but also brought together many Kempo/Kenpo and other martial artists that would have not otherwise shared a training space. He hosts a annual gathering of martial artists every year and had a close friendship with many of the founders presented in this and past Kempo videos. I think it’s hard to talk about the history of Kempo in America and not mention Bruce Juchnik.

Awesome. Tight and precise. One of my teachers kept saying to me, "too many moves". It took a while to keep chipping away to fully understand his meaning. It is not always stripping away. 1) one aspect of too many moves taught me to focus more and more on perfecting my basics. In a,sense when mastering the basic movements would make anything sharp and crisp. 2) with another great teacher of mind where he and the first mentioned were my two top teachers. He taught me how to strike from the ground up. Close kenetic chain. Just think of it as how to twist on the balls of your feet to fallow through with the body. So, when doing a form in one standing place. I twist my body from the balls of my feet into the block or strike. 3) I learned how a block can be smooth like a chinese art, while also a breaking method of karate. I find the more advance the practiciner becomes in either style King fu or karate, the more it became a complementary blend of the two. In a way, much like kempo being smooth, fast, crisp movements. There are so many aspects I could go into each of these. Though in many ways seeing, experiencing it and putting the time into the aspects that are in many ways better experiences past the simple saying gives so much more meaning. Though in quick, the art of how each part of the body moves for the strikes and blocks are an art. Again from the ground up. The upper body part is the big movements everyone see. The arm going out and back. Though reality, at the feet is where the finer but greatest aspects of the strikes and blocks is zone with the fingers aspects, ground up. The devil is in the details. And those details are what makes up the speed, power and elusiveness.

Awesome. regarding Ippon kempo, we called it Bogu Kumite in Koei Kan Karate, rough full contact. Very helpful to get your feet wet into hard fighting.

I teach ChowHoon Goshin Jitsu. Its named after Prof. Chow s younger brother. John Chowhoon. would be great in a future update video to see if we fit in. As we do kenpo karate and Danzan Ryu Jujitsu.

Ural kenpo karate is a style from Russia. This style has evolved over the years. Passed from teacher to student. This style was called Kenpo Karate, Karate, Kenpo. Now it is called Ural Kenpo Karate

Here's another that's quite different to all those so far; Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo Jutsu

Check out Universal Kempo Karate (Schools Association) founded by Professor Martin Buell of Hawaii. I trained in the UKKSA system under now Professor Garland Johnson in Colorado Springs,CO. UKKSA doesn't have any connection with Ed Parker's system that I'm aware of. It has roots in Hawaii but its spread to the mainland appears to have taken a different route. To my knowledge Professor Johnson trained with Professor Buell directly and in Hawaii bringing it back to Colorado Springs. I do remember tracing the school's lineage years ago and getting to the Old Pine Tree style from Okinawa where I hit a dead end or rather my skill as a researcher maxed out.

Hi Dan! Enjoyed this second video on the various styles of kenpo! Having studied several styles/systems listed, I was hoping to see a mention of David German's TAI! His style of kenpo jujitsu is a blend that you would enjoy! His series of 4 videos is presently available on Ebay and you can find RU-vid clips on him as well as interviews I did with him and podcasts on him as well!

In both "types of Kenpo/Kempo" you briefly mentioned George Pesare (and perhaps even Victor Gascon?). If you have the time to research Gascon and the material he developed, when he trained Pesare, and then how Pesare essentially developed the northeast style of kenpo (and those that came from his early schools), I think you'll enjoy the history. We all appreciate these videos! Keep training.

Enjoying your channel!! Been away for awhile, will be catching up. I studied Kempo in the mid 70s at Houston school of martial arts, where my brother and were teaching Judo. It stuck and I made sure it did.

A video on the direction some of the Masters under Mr. Parker took after his passing might be interesting. Along with the two mentioned there is Nackord, Tosten, Joe Palanzo (to name a few).

Great episode. Only thing I would add is that I don't think you've ever covered Kali and it's relationship with Kempo. You should also do a show about The Perfect Weapon. Thanks for the shows!

Hey, I have a suggestion for a video for you to do. Can you do a whole video and explain it thoroughly on the subject of "the reasons why people train in martial arts" and have a repeating segment or have a chart showing where on the chart the reasons fall under with the header on each column like Self Defense only, Sport, and the one that I thought of being Missionary aka Agent where you train for a reason that does not fall under sport or self-defense because they are doing it under an oath or act of service especially under the tutelage of a figurehead person that gives them their missions?

Seen it mentioned a few times in the comments, but agree you should check into Universal Kempo Karate Schools Association under GM Martin T Buell. GM Buell is one of the old timers that started under Thomas Young back in the 50's (BTW Thoms Young was 1 of the 6 that Master Mitose gave Black Belt to including William Chow-Ed Parker's link), GM Buell went on to study and got his first BB in 1966 under Walter Godin (John Hacklman teacher). GM Buell also studied under Emperado. GM Buell is still teaching and even though USKKA is pretty low key, they have many school through out the US and a few overseas. GM Buell was my first teacher and I consider his training the foundation for me and set me onto 35 years of love and practice of Kempo. OH I learned of GM Buell from contacting GM Chow in Honolulu back in early 80's

Ka Ju Ken Bo and "Dacoscos" Wun hop kuen do (The way of the combination fist)) GM Al Dacoscos was a student of Adriano Emperado and Al and Emperado took ka ju ken bo and added kali and Escrima while making the moves more naturally fluent from any position , thanks for your videos their enjoyable Ka for Karate ju for judo / juitsu - ken for kenpo (Main Basis ) - bo for pai lum Kung fu also has western boxing I took kenpo from jay meyers in Ca Ed parker style and then I took Wun Hop Kuen Do fron Art Dacoscos in Co. The difference was huge and it took time to stay relaxed and learn how to explode but then I realized how effective Wun Hop Kuen do is Al Dacoscos is the Movie Actor Mark Dacoscos DAD and they are the real deal!!!!

The true beauty I have found in Kenpo that is different from most arts is the ease it blends with other martial systems because of the arts flow of motion and natural movement. Hence all the different sub systems.

I'd like to know a bit more about one of the styles I spent a few years training in during my youth. It was Shorinji Daruma Ryu Kenshikan Kempo. They had a Honbu in Kyoto, and at that time just a couple of Dojo in New Zealand. I think the Kanchi was called Yazato. Stylistically, seemed to be a blend of GojuRyu and some sort of Kung Fu, with a couple of goju kata included, and 5 Sanchin Santai Kata. Speed was it's primary weapon, to this day I still annoy training partners with my hand speed. Shame I've lost the footwork. They were a member of the All Japan karate Federation or whatever it was called. Thanks to anyone who can tell me more.

I can add one note about Kajukenbo, and that is...similarly to American Kenpo, where students have branched out with new ideas/techniques...that there are different "methods" of study, named after the teacher who implemented the change or improvement. Such as: [The] Emperado(Original) Method, Gaylord Method, Garcia Method, and more. They all started at the base, but tweaked it to their liking. This was actually encouraged by the head founder(Emperado) according to some writings, that if the technique worked(while sticking to some Kaju basics. e.g. doesn't give your back up, etc) - add it in. I remember stumbling upon "Dragon's Den MMA" channel, where they were working on Kajukenbo "roll counters". I reached out and stated that I never knew there were "roll" counters in Kaju, and that maybe I'll learn them once I move up. They replied that those roll counters were exclusively created by their own dojo, and that we(Kaju practicians) are one big OHANA, and that they had techniques they were willing to share! It's pretty neat stuff.

How about a video on the Burmese martial arts? 'Thaing' kind of refers to martial arts in a general way, like gung fu in China. But there is 'bando' which is very kempo like, or five animal kung fu, depending on who you look at. There is also 'lethwei' which looks like muay thai on the surface, but is really much more like muay boran on speed. Thanks for your time. Oss.

I come from a style from California its called Kenju Kenpo Karate and Kodokan Judo with 5th Degree Black belt Sensei Kirk Ellis he came out in Black belt magazine 1966 and are Dojo came out in 1976 Bicenntennial year we threw a tournament in Madera California

Actually Nippon Kempo is a mix of Judo, Pre-Kadokan Ju-Jitsu, Okinawan Karate, Shinto-Ryu and Goju-Ryu Karate. It’s mostly made for self-defense and combat for police and military. But they teach it for the public. And it does have a sport to it. So I guess you can say this pre-dated MMA. Especially since it has striking, grappling, ground fighting and takedowns.

If and when there is time or opportunity you should do something on Mike Pick and his Universal Kenpo ideas. I found them eye opening.

Can you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do a video about South Eastern Kenpo Karate Ju-Jitsu brotherhood? I took this for years and was the most effective martial arts I’ve ever taken. Unfortunately not a lot of schools left. It’s similar to 5.0 but in my opinion more effective.

It would be interesting to take a look at modern Arnis influence in kenpo. A lot of Professor Presas's students in the US came from Kenpo schools.

Have you heard of U.K.G.A (United Kempo and Gung Fu Academies) founded by Dr. Monty Atchley? His kempo is called Shinjutsu Kempo which is a combination of Oikiru-ryu Goju Kempo and Bushido Kempo. I go to this school by the way.

Nippon Kempo looks like a predecessor of Daidojuku/Kudo. Only Kudo is closer to Kyokushin training and Nippon Kempo incorporates more joint locks. I'm going to do more research on Nippon Kempo. Yes please do some polynesian arts. Especially if you do a CineDojo on The Raid:Redemption and/or The Raid 2.

In Colorado Kenpo Karate (Ed Parker) compared to Universal Kempo Karate ? Also Universal Kempo Karate compared to Speakman's Kenpo 5.0 Please help me understand the differences Dan the school is down the street from me and when I met a guy from Universal it was like we were talking two different languages..

You should make a discord server so fans of the channel can chat and talk about martial arts live around the clock and it's a good platform to announce when videos are going to be made ask for advice on things people might want to see in videos and get feedback I think an art of one dojo discord would be huge

Question: So, something I've always had a question about is what separates Kempo from Kenpo? Is it that Kempo is primarily the spelling when it comes to the Chinese and Hawaiian branches, and Kenpo more or less starts as a spelling with Ed Parker but also shows up in Japanese spellings slightly before that?
