In which scenarios would you use real soil in pots? And what is your mix when using real soil.

What mix did you use for the cycads? Will a mix like that work in dry heat climate?

I have some perlite, coco coir, sand and compost. What is the best proportion for a windmill palm in a 100cm tall pot?
@Rocketman0407
@Rocketman0407 6 месяцев назад
For Trachies I would mix 1 part compost, 1 part coco coir. See how it drains. If it drains poorly start to add 1/4 perlite until it drains well.
@Rocketman0407
@Rocketman0407 5 месяцев назад
As for pumice vs perlite. Would you use them in the same quantity? Example a soil mix say: 2 parts peat and 1 part perlite. If I dont have perlite should I just use the pumice in the same quantity or should I add lesS or more?
@TheCfkingfish
@TheCfkingfish 5 месяцев назад
Perlite is more compact so you would want to use more of it. Pumice will not fill in all the gaps just make sure it is settled.

@@TheCfkingfish so use about half or so instead?

Hi Thank you for the video. Is it good to use Coco coir mixed with Perlite and Pumice? And maybe some Worm casting? This is what I would use for my other houseplants and I have this Yucca palm I need to repot soon but don’t know what is good to use. Hope you see this 🙏🏼
@TheCfkingfish
@TheCfkingfish 5 лет назад
That would be fine, we don't use pumice in the East that much because it is very expensive.

Can you grow plants in 100% organic material?

So if my soil is very clayey, should I add large grained sand and some crushed lava rock? I'm preparing to plant palm trees in the soil, not in pots. Large trees were removed, so there's a lot of ground up tree bark there.
@TheCfkingfish
@TheCfkingfish 6 лет назад
You can if you would like, it is not required though. Tree bark is good stuff to plant palms into if you have it there - we usually have to pay for it!

The Palm Fiend Thank you! I still have to purchase and plant my palm trees.

So your potting mix is usually 1/3 sand 1/3 perlite and 1/3 peat ?

You don't find the lack of nutrients to cause any problems? Do you add compost sometimes too? How much? @@TheCfkingfish

im trying to grow citrus and tropicals in a cool wet climate and keep loosing plants to rot by the time next season comes and im thinking its cause im using clay loam, should i switch to pure sand and topdress with compost? cheers
@TheCfkingfish
@TheCfkingfish 5 лет назад
You might have to give that a try, or rock mixed with sphagnum moss in between.
@veganchiefwarrior6444
@veganchiefwarrior6444 5 лет назад
@@TheCfkingfish it turns out its mostly silt and barely any clay but i guess they are similar, i tried rock with the tiniest amount of peat and like all these diferent soils when replanting icecream beans once and they all died over night lol i didnt try sand tho but it would have probably been the same, i guess you can overwater in anything really so i should just learn when to water properly, slowly doing less lol if this is the game i gotta play in soil it makes me think i should just go back to compost and like never water it lol compost isnt a stable soil the everything would fall over on a windy day especially in small pots

Take a normal potty mix and add some sand and perlite. You will want good drainage but give it a lot of water.

What’s wrong with this soil is it not good ?
@ZPalms
@ZPalms 2 года назад
@@teeedog1 I find the mix to be dense and it can get mucky if you don't add other amendments to it. Water doesn't drain quickly, and fungus gnats right out of the bag and I don't understand why it's sold as cactus, citrus and palm soil if it's not already free draining as is. I think it's ok though, if you need something fast and it's easily on hand at any store, so I do continue to get more and add things as needed.
