Hi Jack. Another interesting video; thanks for making and sharing. I too love palms and am lucky that here in south-west Cornwall we have a wide range of them growing all over the place. I also like the Australian tree ferns and I have one in my garden. It's only about 6' high but the fronds are at least 5' long too so it looks lovely. I look forward to your next video :)

Since you said windmill palm hardy 10 below zero my die from that too cold they can survive cold winter with protection without it short term live cold winter and only work warmer winter and dry cold with o degrees and 10 below zero in new Mexico and they grow many palms in Albuquerque new Mexico because is much warmer than my ave in Colorado springs and grand junction co have windmill palms leave always truly in dry cold o degrees and grow back. My true cold hardy palms for 10 below zero is sabal minor and Louisiana is needle palm and sabal mccurtain. Washingtonia filifera and filibusta can survive 10 below zero with dry cold and leaves froze and grow back fast. I will try my washingtonia palms in my yard next year and hopefully big enough for winter protection til they get trunk and see what happens next after too big to handle and grow fast and out grow winter protection. Windmill palm is slower Easter to keep them alive with winter protection and keep them dry. Humidity cold and ice can kill windmill palm now always survive humidity cold. I live in dry air climate. More chance to have my palms to live in winter. Because when they tell you windmill palm live 10 below people thought it can live but now always. Live and learn. And ground from kill palms roots they can die keep ground warm they live from use mulch and cover in winter. And near my house wall ground stay warm yearound.

It's actually a trachycarpus wagnarianus and there is actually a lot of debate over whether or not it is a type of fortunei or not, you can tell by the way that the leaves are very compact and sturdy unlike normal fortunei.
@V8AmericanMuscleCar
@V8AmericanMuscleCar 4 года назад
Hi Philip! Does a T. Wagnerianus need drainage when planted in a backyard directly into the ground? I planted it in the backyard and then I start reading about it. LOL New leaves grow, but they are not dark green, and the old leaves are yellow-green. It' about 20 inches big palm with leaves. Some advice??
@victoriavisscher8239
@victoriavisscher8239 4 года назад
V8AmericanMuscleCar most palms like to be well drained. As long as it isn’t in a low spot and water isn’t pooling around the trunk it should be fine. If drainage is an issue for you and it’s roots are always wet, you may want to dig up the palm and raise up the area the palm is in (3 foot radius) and replant with a good draining mix.
@V8AmericanMuscleCar
@V8AmericanMuscleCar 4 года назад
@@victoriavisscher8239 thanks. The surface dries quickly and what's down around the roots can't be sure. Water doesn't remains on the surface and when I water it, the water is not retained. So I don't know, maybe leave it as it is... 😬

Thanks for this. Would you recommend the same process for potting on a Canary Island Palm? I bought one recently that looks too big for its pot, although it's too small to keep outside all year. I was thinking I could put it into a bigger pot and bring it into the house over the winter until it gets a bit bigger. Would it cope okay with the change in temperature from outdoors (in Scotland) to indoors?

Dear jack nice to see your video, I am hoping to repot some 18 months old palms that I got from the mother tree what is the best time of year to report these palms. Apart from using compost sometimes I do not use any Industriali made chemicals on the garden, I make worm cast and usually add a bit of grit or some stones I also make my own potash by burning a lot of tweaks which have the cambium layer on them which apparently makes good potash what do you think about what I want to do your experience would be well appreciated Sam.

Good video . I need a bit of advice if you can help . Two months ago I planted a healthy four foot canary phoenix palm . Being an amateur , when watering some shrubs and bedding plants I also gave the palm plenty of water . Now when I water I water heavily . To my dismay the palm has stared to seriously wilt on all outer branches . Can this be saved , potted up and should I remove withered outer branches . Any help would be really appreciated as the wife is going up the wall . Thanks in anticipation .

I have just pulled one of these (trachycarpus fortunei )from beneath my hedge. To my knowledge it ha been horizontal since we purchased the house 5 years ago. It is around 8 feet long with several leaf fans. The plant has been laying sideways along the ground beneath the hedge. We decided to pull it out to see if we could erect it in the garden. When it was finally dragged out we found that it has obviously been cut down as at the base is basically a trunk about 9 inches in diameter, no roots, just a sawn through trunk. The plant appears healthy with about a dozen fan like leaves. I assume it's been getting its nutrients from the main trunk being in contact with the ground as it has no apparent roots? Should we just dig a hole and put it in, or should we shorten the trunk a little first?

It’s John Innes No 3 which is just a brand make here in uk of a light nutrient rich sandy soil type, used for potting. But if you’re not in Uk you should substitute it with a mix of any garden gritty sand and any general potting compost (50//50) and add some perlite if you have it for extra drainage but not essential. Basically you want a nutrient rich gritty soil for your palm.
