Not at all. You only use that rule when differentiating ax^n types. We use what is called the chain rule on this. You should revise the chain rule for differentiating functions like this. Go on to my website and check this out under the chain rule.

Your help is really appreciated ... I have a question... regarding the product rule as well as the quotient rule, is it a must to substitute with for example u=... ... or can I directly work it out ... I can directly work it out ... but my question is, do I lose marks if I didn't write them ??? Edexcel pure maths 3

could you work out a more complex 'product rule' question: x^3(2x+6)^4 I came up to the part where you use the formula dy/dx = u dv/dx + v du/dx After that I couldn't factorise the solution which i got to be: (2x+6^3)(14x^2+6x^2). i'm not sure if that is right. However the final answer is supposed to be 2x^2(2x+6)^3(7x+9).

It's easy. Use the multiplication method.

there arent a lot of things in maths i believe should never have been created or even imagined but differentiation is one of them! dont understand and wont ever until someone can say you do this because of that etc

Hi, sorry, for the first question, second bracket of dy/dx, how did it become 3e power3x because i thought it would be 3e power2x? or is it different? Please explain :)

This is an exponential function and handled differently from say terms of the form ax^n where you take 1 off the power. Check out my diiferentiation tutorials on differentiating exponential functions e^x

Won't you be able to take out cos x as a common factor at the end as well? 4xcos x + 4sin x (divide trough by 4cosx) to give 4cos x (x + tan x) ? thanks you're videos are awesome by the way.

How is that the power in dv/dx of e^3x equals to 3e^3x? Shouldn't the power, ^3x, be reduced by 1? Like the rule: y= ax^n, therefore dy/dx=anx^n-1

i didnt undertand the part at 5:33 when you said about e and a , why do you not take 1 off the power? should it not have been 3e^2x
@wo3563
@wo3563 5 лет назад
Dizzeesniipez no because to differentiate e in this case you times e^3x by 3. The formula is e^u . u’.

Should a Y7 / Grade 7 be doing this?
@Manjit702
@Manjit702 8 лет назад
why while differentaiting e^3x it comes out after diffrentiating 3e^3x and not as 3xe^3x-1
@forever5335
@forever5335 7 лет назад
manjeet singh I noticed that too, I think it was just a mistake. But it drove me crazy
@theonionmachine5990
@theonionmachine5990 7 лет назад
Because you differentiate the power too if it has a number before the x, so if you differentiate 3x-1, you get 3 so you bring it down before the e so you get 3e^3x-1
@brilovesbrie9585
@brilovesbrie9585 6 лет назад
I don't think it is a mistake.
@Reloaded9923
@Reloaded9923 6 лет назад
No, 3e^3x is indeed correct and that is not a mistake. When you differentiate 3x you get 3. Move the power down to make it a coefficient you get 3e^(3x)
