Difficult Customers/ Lets Clear Up A Few Facts. 

Keep doing what you're doing Rob, anyone with half a brain can tell that you are one of the most honest, conscientious gardeners out there. RU-vid is full of keyboard warriors and it is easy to let these comments get to you, but keep at it. I love your channel and your infectious personality. There are some sad people in this world, rise above it mate - All the best 👍

Rob. Ignore the shit comments. I am only 16 and have been running a small lawncare and gardening business for just over a year, part time while doing school. And even I have had my fair share of bad clients. As you said, as soon as they breach that agreement I politely release the customer and move on. Keep making great videos Rob and I wish you all the best 👍

Speaking as someone with a modest number of subscribers, I think we all go through this stage as RU-vidrs. I used to get really upset by it but now I use two tactics. The first one is the easiest. Delete the comment and block them. Very satisfying. The second one is to do a ‘James Blunt’ and if you get a nasty comment, you double down on what they said but back on yourself. Cos nobody can bully you as well as you can bully yourself. Works a treat!

I came across you on youtube within the last few days. I have 👍 a number of your vids. Your thinking and vids have confirmed my experiences over the years since starting my gardening business in 2016. My client base is very good now, but each year you will get new ones. Some will be crap awkward clients to deal with for a season. Some will be superb. I do the same as you. Endure a season and if any client is continually asking “can you just” or swapping booked work from grass to hedges etc, anything which begins to affect my working schedules- which in truth - reality affects the following clients bookings on a regular basis, at the end of the season they are dropped of the client base. Because trying to keep that one client happy is at the expense of numerous other clients after that booking. If i am constantly late or ending up rushing the next clients work, then its forcing me to complete substandard work or work longer unnecessary hours. 2018 was a shocker down her in south west wales too. Luckily when the grass stopped growing hedges and brambles were growing like crazy because of deeper routes. So i switched to light hedge cut trims, and clearance work. But getting back to the subject. It takes at least 5 years to sort a good client base. When starting off you just have to take everything you can on. Awkward demanding clients. Travelling distances a bit to far but a £5 profit is better than no profit, so you keep chasing them until you are in a fully loaded position with constant new client calls, and get the confidence to weed out the chaff. Dropping some distance work, dropping some awkward clients, dropping anyone that wants to haggle or barter over work all the time. Dropping clients that moan if you cut faster than previous weeks, etc. Any client that considers a quote too expensive or my rates too high - I point out - I have loyal client base currently. In fact I have removed the sign writing from my van because I have enough new work trickling in from referrals. One thing I have moved away from is weeding. I refuse to do it. Im not getting any younger. The kneed and hands cant take it. Why do I want to be kneeling in the mud for such pittance? Nope I am mainly grass cuts, hedge cuts, clearance and some odd path pressure washing work for existing clients. I just want a decent steady income, after paying for the van, replenishing worn machinery, maintaining existing machinery, fuelling my van and machines. Too many people think we expect us to just charge £10 an hour or £5 a cut. One client I luckily dodged compared my costs against a plumber who charged £8 an hour. Worst client to have had too - running around after multiple holiday homes on a Friday morning or Saturday morning. A plumber does not carry £5000 to £10000 worth of kit in his van to fit or fix heating systems. People have an incorrect understanding of the gardening business. So let the nasty comments go over your head. Dont let it eat in to you. I agree with your way of thinking. You are fair. You are straight and even if you end up with a difficult client you still have the compassion and grace to endure them until the end of the season so you cause minimum inconvenience to the client. That in itself is a great human quality. Consideration for others even when other are difficult. 👍 Keep up the great work, keep on mowing, keep on publishing these vids 😊👍

Rob it’s your business, you know what your worth you know what standard of work you give. My advice stay doing what you do, being who you are and producing these videos you’ve created a business off your own back that’s clearly doing well so you know your doing it right mate and those who want to get abusive over it all as it doesn’t suit how their minds are wired can literally be stay ignored and forgotten 👍🏻 keep the videos coming Rob and chin up pal 💪🏻

Well said mate! I have to say I agree with all you said. I worked in garden centres for over twenty years and customers do look down on you and expect you to bow down to them, with them swearing and abusing you. The advantage of working for yourself, you can choose to be surrounded by customers you want to work for. As for the cowards and abusers online, stuff them mate. You crack on what you are doing. Good on you!

Keep doing what you’re doing Rob. I find your videos really useful. I cut for about 5 customers on a regular basis and it started from cutting a neighbours lawn as a favour. I do it as a side line to my full time office job and really love it and find it very satisfying. Thanks for doing the videos and hints and tips. You’re doing a great job.

Rob, I have been doing this sort of work for over 40 years so have a lot of experience and there is nothing in your videos that isn't true. Unfortunately social media is full of toxicity and pain in the ass keyboard warriors whose sole purpose in life seems to be making others miserable, so rise above it mate and keep going. Rich

Head up mate. Dealing with negative, dumb, non constructive comments is hard when you are not use to it, best thing to do is try not to feel like you need to justify your actions and simply ignore the haters, they aren't going anywhere unfortunately mate. 👍

As a fellow self employed gardener that's only been going 3 years, a lot of the things you've mentioned/covered have made me think.If anything more video's please! You are 100% CORRECT, just keep doing what you are doing and ignore the haters, this is your living, you can't earn a living if you don't value yourself, value your time, you'll burn yourself out, you have to have strong boundaries and you work to an agreement, you have to be the boss because it's going to be you doing the work and gardening can be hard graft, you can't be too nice and keep doing the odd job here and there, you lose money and it disrupts your work schedule so you feel more stressed playing catchup with other jobs

I don't know how anyone could think you were anything other than a straight up fella Rob. I have had quite a few hate comments on my main channel, and it's just something we RU-vidrs have to put up with. Comments can be very nasty on this platform and we need to be thick skinned not to get upset by them.

Watched your video and glad for you that you got it off your chest. I am a gardener in surrey and I am my own boss and do what you do. A lot of these silly people would not take it in their Jobs so why as owners of our own company should we be mucked about when time is precious. You keep smiling mate and carry on. Understand your frustration. Letting clients run your business is a recipe for demotivation, ending up hating your what you do and financial problems. I thought Emeral Bren was more or less agreeing with you and adding to the discussion rather than being critical.

That's what happens with social media these days, people hide behind keyboards saying cruel things with no comeback to them. That's why I don't do RU-vid vids so I appreciate people like you who do these videos for other people's enjoyment and for learning and tips. You keep doing your great honest videos. I personally leave the last cuts to the customers discretion or they keep getting cut until the end of October.

Lawns are still growing here in the Midlands Rob, most customers are happy to carrying on especially if there are leaves falling too. You’re dammed if you do and damned if you don’t.

I live in Gateshead and cut my grass today. Had to lift blades up as grass was that long. Waited for a few hrs then cut it again to correct height. Keep doing what your doing 👍

Keep doing what you are doing rob I learned so much from your video and I have the qualifications and spray licence and I spent 10 year working for someone else because I don't have the confidence to go self employ but watching your video and 2 other have given me the confidence and now doing it part time and build my customers relationship an now wish I did it 10 year ago so big thumbs up from me and thank you and good luck for the future and hopefully see more videos from you

Hello Rob. I’m a self employed gardener. Have been for 20 years and I can totally relate to your side of the story here. When I first started, I was strapped for cash and had to put up with some horrible people who treated me like dirt. I had to put up with this treatment or not eat. However, as time went on and I established a good reputation, I didn’t need to endure any nonsense from people like that. I won’t work for ********’s any more. These folks turn up in all walks of life. I admire the fact that you said that you do a good/honest job no matter what. You do come across as an honourable man. As for u the haters out there … these people will always exist. They are obviously not gardeners and don’t know what they are talking about … and they are the types we don’t want to work for. A bunch of ‘’can you just … ‘’ types! Anyway, I like your channel. I find it encouraging to hear your stories and I learn things too. So keep it up, Rob. Most of us appreciate you!

You can tell you're a 100% genuine guy rob. If its getting too much maybe have a break from social media. This profession is stressy enough without adding to that. We're the same as you re difficult customers. Don't need them and won't put up with them now. And fact....nice customers get more out of us for no more cost. Simples. 👍

You and your channel are excellent. I agree with your methods and sensible pricing strategy. Your advice can save new business gardeners and those in their first couple of years s lot of headaches. I'm still mowing lawns in December so long has their is no frost my customers like to see the stripes .I'm in the Manchester area 50% of my customers are weekly visits ,every year I get rid of 5% of my penny pinching customers for better ones ,I have no time for cheeky customers who take advantage of your good nature I only have customers who respect what you do for them gardening is hard manual work when you go from garden to garden .Keep mowing those lawns Rob .

Haup rob well said mate, iv the same problem with customers; so now I tell them it’s x amount for cutting the lawns and a bit of weeding and putting a nice edge on it , if they don’t want the lawns doing but want something else doing then it’s a hourly rate £20 minimum charge.. Or the best ones are( fortunately cut) don’t cut it this week leave till next week ( no ) it’s going to be in a month you’ve mist your spot:::: I’ve been self employed nearly 30 odd years, not just in gardening: but it’s the same process I’ve got a scheduled of when customers and work are done. I’m the boss I’m offering a service and that’s it. I pick and choose who I work and when for. I’m not long in this game but I already drop customers when they start becoming pains, when they think you only work for them. And that’s why we become self employed. I agree with you, ignore the haters, my full working season is March - October if my regular customers need me to call again in November then they contact me. I've dropped customers before if they are not a right fit for my business, and they are easily replaced with more suitable ones. People have to realise we are a business and have got to cover our costs, like you said we don't get holiday pay, sick pay, new equipment etc. I'd love to go on holiday for two weeks in August but have to wait until November, because I have to make the money through the peak season. Keep up the good work

Having listened to this video I feel you have let some people get to you . I was self employed for over 40 years and have found I can relate to your problems . Whenever you put your heart and soul into something you take it really personally whenever customers try and use your good nature to their advantage . You need to let the comments by the haters run off you like water off a ducks back . The green eyed monster is always going to be there . Jealousy destroys . Whenever you retire and start to see things from a different perspective , you will look back and really feel foolish for stressing yourself out about customer problems . I would advise you to pick the customers you want to do work for . Bin the rest . Most of the public are OK, but there is an element who thrive on the something for nothing syndrome . It all boils down to pounds shillings and pence , you look after number one and you will not go far wrong . Those that are against you for nothing , give them some thing to be against you for . Anyone who suggests you are ripping someone off because you want to stand over an agreement definitely has no clue about running a gardening business. The most difficult part is dealing with people and keeping them to agreed terms... Even if the agreement is written funnily enough. Also nothing wrong with lawn mowing. It's tough work too. Don't let snobbery get to you. I'm a qualified horticulturist and business owner but I'd rather be mowing all day than weeding all day 😉 keep on keeping on. You provide a service which is valued.

Rob. Firstly mate. You don't have to justify yourself or what you do to anyone. It's a sad fact that the more popular you become you will enevitabily attract a few key board warriors (haters) it's one of the reasons I've not gone down that route. Showing there getting to you is opening the door to them. Try just deleting any comments and forgetting about them. If ever things are getting on top and you need a chat. You've got my number

I think your a good honest chap, we should stick together not slate each other, it takes time to get to a position in this game to able to pick and choose jobs especially if your starting out and you need to put food on the table ect we have all done jobs we hate but when you get to that point it’s a great feeling and you feel like you have made it!! The beauty of social media for all these gobshites is that they can act in that manner with no consequences. Rob you're a top guy. All your vids are so helpful and you can tell youre no rip of merchant! You come across very down to earth and I think the vast majority recognise the fact that you're running a business and sometimes shit things happen and u have to move forwards how YOU want to. Rob , there are so many people who hide behind they're keyboard and wont even give a name , I totally agree with what you say , you are in charge , they have employed you for the season to cut the grass , if they want the hedge cutting that should be an extra , the grass will be twice as long the next time and harder to cut and take longer , if you don't stick to what has been agreed then they will expect you to start only cutting the lawn once a month and doing other gardening tasks on the other week

Ye Rob they are a pain . Any customers carry on like that I offer them a daily rate or an hourly rate . Any ones that are fussy . I say goodbye to them when I'm half finished . If ya ring the door bell your making your self vulnerable to ya would n mind ... ..

I had it once with a customer in a similar industry a family member threatened to do what they called a sting with the daily mirror on me lol! I never went back. Ik this is a old video but some customers don’t deserve us quality gardens a lot of people use us for other jobs and some people who comment on the work saying charged to much and judging the job knowing they couldn’t do half a good job all the best keep it up we love you rob

Unfortunately there are people out there whos hobby is making nasty comments on youtube videos. I know of one who thrives on stirring up a hornets nest online. Weather you are in the right or wrong you are still more than entitled to end the contract at the end of the season. I work 50% for myself 50% for a company. Luckily my customers are all great. However some from the company are a bit iffy so they have a regular change of customers Keep posting the videos, they are great and try no to let the ****ers get you down

Hi Rob, keep doing what you do! Both on RU-vid and with your Gardening services. People envy what you have, and to be the great bloke you are! As for the 17 cuts. I charge unless they give me 14 days notice to skip. I see it as the time they are paying for rather than the grass cutting. I've a lawn survey form for accessing the lawns prior to putting down treatment, just let me know if you want an editable file sending across. I wouldn't let it get to you mate, never met you , only stumbled upon you by accident but as I'm thinking of doing my own little gardening business i am glad i did find you. These haters are just trolls, they think there big hiding behind a keyboard , what cowards or are they jealous etc. Life is too short mate, you keep growing and learning mate. Seems to me that you're running and moving 'YOUR' business forward in a good and honest way , I've had a Lawn Enhancement business down here in the Westcountry for nearly 11 years now, so I like to think I can tell if someone knows what they're talking about or if they're just blagging, keep up the good work chap and please don't let a few turkeys stop you making these videos that so many of us enjoy! Hi it’s a pleasure watching you , now. You seem to me to be a nice guy. You do a great service. There’s people out there who just can’t keep there mouths shut ie the haters. ! These people are sickos. Rob. I love watching you. Every trade has customers who take advantage of there good nature. I’ve had it , I’m a roofer. And I’ve met them all , trust me. I’ve been accused of ripping people off , and you know there’s customers from hell as there is trademan from hell it’s part of the job , I’ve got many happy customers as you have. But you could be Thomas chippendale makeing furniture , of the highest quality, people will allways pick holes in it , people don’t relise where not a charity where in business, we pay bills like they do. Rob don’t get annoyed just get on with the great service your providing , people who try it on when your trying to earn a living we call them BOGEYS they should be named and shamed , your a inspiration to all the gardeners in great Briton. I thought you explained the situation perfectly in the original video Rob, no need to apologise for anything. Your videos are a tonic for me, I think their great, intelligent but funny, thought provoking and educational and often relaxing 😂 But maybe that's just me, I find some of them somewhat relaxing!
