I had read about the disaster in 1963 when I was 13. I finally made a trip to Italy this past summer and visited the dam. I spent a very comfortable evening and night in Longarone. I visited the cemetery to pay my respects in the morning and drove up to the dam. It was interesting to drive through the 1-way tunnels, with the openings cut out to see glimpses of the front face of the dam. I had to park fairly high up the road and walked down, then taking the path that leads down to the upstream face. It is a steep walk. It was an eerie experience to get closer and closer to the dam wall, to stand in front of it and then touch it, realizing that I was standing on 650' of landslide debris. I took the tour of the dam and could see how much of the crest was torn off and how the sides of the canyon are still barren from the tsunami. I went on to have a great lunch in Erto and then drove further into the Dolomites. I will not forget the visit.
