Digging for clams in Oregon. How and where to catch giant clams during low tide

I went clamming again on the Oregon coast, and I caught some of the biggest clams ever. This time, I used a garden rake to dig for clams. The best time to go clamming is during a low tide (especially a negative tide where the mud flats will expose the clams for easy digging). The cockles we found were about 2-3 inches below surface underwater, many were right on the surface, and you can see them easily.
Clamming season is open year round in Oregon.

Here on the east coast we have both types of the clams your catching. We use stainless steel rakes with butter knife blades welded on they glide through the sand so much easier. Primarily we catch what your calling butter clams. Another great video my friend!!

I don’t know whether you do this while clamming, but you should bring old clam shells and then toss them back into the water for seeding. I lived near a river like this. However, no one in the area would practice this shell restoration. By the time I was in college the entire area contained very few clams like when I was a child-hardly any. To bring back the clams, the neighbors had to toss out bricks and stones. Great vids, btw.

I go with nothing but a mesh onion bag. The funest part is getting a limit in 1/4 the time of the guy in waders with a bucket, rake, shovel, clam gun, fishing net (dump truck, backhoe, and dynamite)! People get three or four and wonder how you did so well. That snail you caught is a moon snail, and their primary food is the cockles that you are chasing. Although they are tough, guess what they taste like? They lay their eggs in something that looks like a rubber tire inner tube guard. These are unregulated where I live.

On the East Coast we just throw the clams together to be steamed or boiled, wait until the shells open and eat the whole clam with butter. It seem the West Coast clams need more cleaning and preparation. Does this hold true?

Oregon seems haven for seafood. We used to have that in our province in the Philippines. Pollution ruined all that. Some island provinces still have that kind of clam, a key ingredient when we cook banana heart plus coco milk.

Hi PK, I was at Seaside a few weeks back for Razor Clamming. I'm thinking of going to Tillamook bay to do some Razor and other clamming, are you aware of any locations that are fairly fruitful? I have a 2 year old Im bringing along so some place that is fairly easy mobile. I'm looking at the ODFW page and its saying some places are accessible via boat in the bay. Thoughts, concerns or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Joyan Baker Which one looks distgusting like guts inside? Do they taste different? I've had oysters but never had a clam. once I got one off a buffet but when I opened it. It was so gross I couldn't eat it. It was an oriental restaurant. Maybe they were imported and something I was not used to seeing. I thought it was an oyster when I picked it up.
