I found one of these at a buddy’s house. I was going to make an offer on it however, thanks to your video, I think I can manage just fine without. Thank you, had it not been for the thorough job you did I may have made an uninformed decision.
glad to help. it's a really nice unit. i no longer have this one, but I still have two 3.2 second models (for stereo fun).. i still need to go and give them both the sample rate mod. did that to a different one, but sold that one as well. demoed that one in another video. can't remember if it was actually this one that got the mod.. could have been.
Have you turned up the 2 -trim pots inside any ? I like to know more about if you have I have RDS-1900 with the black buttons but it does everything just like this one
It’s virtually identical to what this one is other than the amount of memory it has for sampling. Some of the later models had a different style of button but I prefer the mechanical button because for some reason when they made those button changes they also caused the memory to clip when you switch to a faster delay time. With the mechanical button version that would remember the entire sample even if you went to a faster delay and then went back to a slower one. In another RU-vid video somewhere I think this memory clipping could be disabled but it takes a little soldering i believe
I had the 7.2 second delay version of this and LOVED it .. even used it to sample my voice and slow it down to scare the fuck out of kids at Halloween XD
yea i currently own three of them now (two 3.6 versions) i'm interested in trying the circuit bending possibilities.. one which i think is actually pretty simple is the sample rate.. you can lower it which makes the delay last longer, but more importantly is the bit rate makes the 8 bit REALLY crunchy..
@@BrewerShettles Interesting. I know I read something about "8-bit" somewhere. Maybe the CPU or digital/analog converters? I remember owning one back in the late 1980s-early 1990s (I think it was a RDS1900) & it sounded really low-fi. I also currently own a DSP256XL. It also has digital/analog converters that are pretty low-fi. If you set the Mix level to 100% it really alters the sound of whatever synth or sound source you're running though it. There's 1 program I call "Analoger" (a chorus + delay) because it gives any synth a very cool analog type sound.
@@8bitwidgets Very VERY late reply. (sorry😆) It's awesome that you have 2 of the 3.6s. I had a 1900 & a DSP128 back in the day. I bought a DSP256XL about 6-7 years ago for only $40! (works perfectly but needs a new battery) I saw 1900s & 3.6s in good to very good condition for $50-$100. I was gonna grab one, I didn't get around to it, and now the only ones I can find are in "parts only" to "fair condition". (and a bit overpriced IMO....$125 for parts only, $200+ for fair condition) Did you ever get around to circuit bending it? I'll check your channel for any potential videos.
@@gjc82071 that's awesome (better late than never! :) ) so yea I have the DSP256XL as well. These were staple effects for me back in the day. These are largely overlooked underdogs. I'm looking to have both of my 3.6 modified with the pot mod to allow you to tweak the sample rate with a knob (see my other video for that one, which eventually i sold). Yea there's one ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Tg025KDklws.html it's trippy
I don't have any hard numbers about it, but it was definitely an 80's delay.. estimate mid to late 80's. there were a number of models made like the 3.6 second version and 7.2 which I assume came out as later models. but the 1900 was one of the earlier models i assume. i know there was a 900 model as well, which i assume proceeded this one. the ones with the physical clicky buttons like the one i demo in this video were the earlier models.. the later ones had black buttons that didn't really physically click in.. again not sure about the "discography" of all of the RDS models.. but that's what I believe is the case.
there you go. this is what the backside looks like. virtually all RDS delays are setup like this from my experience with the various models I have had. i.ebayimg.com/images/g/uvMAAOSwMpZUoCwg/s-l1600.jpg
@@8bitwidgets and you now get a thumbs up. I mean hey. At least your not one of those 'i made a video to talk about myself'. Your video was to the point.
lol I try.. I don't have my stuff set to monetize.. of course that choice was made back when if you chose not too, there were no ads.. now everyone gets ads regardless.. :P maybe i should update the video icon with me making some crazy face looking at the RDS.. RDS RUNTHROUGH in 2023?!! in impact font...
no from what i've seen it's literally the ONLY defining difference i could see in any of the ones i've had. 900, 1900 and 3.6.. HOWEVER, the later models that have the black buttons that don't click.. there is a BIG difference in those.. when you flip modes while in hold, the memory is truncated so if you go from a 1 sec recording loop and jump down to 10ms.. and go back to 1 sec you only have the 10ms chunk of sound in memory still.. boo.. the feature I show later on in this video will not work with the black button models.. however i do think there is a mod to them that can fix this. I haven't tested it myself, but in another video out here on youtube shows how to do the sample rate mod which I have had done to one of these units. in the video he identifies something in there that can prevent the flushing of memory.. to see the mod in action you can see my video here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Tg025KDklws.html i have since sold this particular unit. however i still own two 3.6s (for stereo effects, since each one is mono) but i haven't had them modded yet. it's on my list.
@@8bitwidgets thanks for the detailed reply! does this memory truncation problem occur even if I use a separate footswitch to activate Hold? also, as a somewhat relate aside: do you experience with the PDS series of delays? seems like those pedals are basically smaller versions of the RDS series, minus the onboard modulation (except for the PDS 20/20 I guess).
@@ripwildy2022 no problem, the truncation happens when you flip delay ranges only. flange / chorus / delay... jumping from these "clicks" is what causes memory clippage. Engaging the hold button won't effect what's in memory, it will simply repeat what's in memory in the current mode.. I've never seen a PDS in person, but my money would be on those behaving like the newer generations of RDS with the black buttons. I'm sure they too could be modded.
@@8bitwidgets interesting. I intend on getting one of these RDS/PDS to use as a slapback delay with hint of modulation, and occasionally use the Hold feature to create that sort robotic rhythmic strumming effect - so I'm not sure if the memory truncation would be an issue for me. I'm more concerned with whether I should save up for a version with longer delay time or not, or just go for the cheapest one I can find. I mean, I already have a looper (Pigtronix Infinity) and a delay with tap tempo (Boss VF-1 - technically a multieffects unit, but the delays on it are beautiful) - and as fun as it looks to be able to change the speed and pitch of a loop in such a real-time fashion, I'm not sure if I'd have much practical use for it.
@@ripwildy2022 yea 3.2 would be the most i would imagine you'd need.. next one below that as far as i know is the 1900ms unit here.. yea if you're not flipping modes in mid play then you could get away with the newer black button models. i like to "play" these units while something is going through it.. not playing live through it since i'd not have any free fingers to knob twiddle.. and truncating for me is a dealbreaker because of how i use it like in that other video.. but for someone hands off.. not so important.
There's a channel here -LPCUploads- which uploads recordings by a prank caller during the late 80's early 90's who used the RDS delays to freak out operators and random people! :D
@@trashteeth look, rough guy. I'm just fed up with your attitude. I just am. There's gonna be noise comin' from inside your ears when I'm through with ya, pal.
yea you can run a mic through it. it doesn't have an XLR input, you'd have to convert it to a 1/4" cord but other than that it should be fine. the input has a gain knob to help boost a signal.
