In the run-up to COP26, we asked our researchers to tell us about their work and the challenges of tackling climate change.
Sahar Arshi is a Research Fellow at the School of Design at the University of Leeds. Sahar works on the quantification and communication of fabric tactile properties, focusing on digitisation and immersive technologies. Using these technologies, Sahar is able to recreate the fabric tactile properties which will mean shoppers can virtually feel the fabric.
This would mean there would no longer be a need to send out any swatches which would help the environment.
“Shoppers often like to investigate a fabric’s tactile properties by mechanically manipulating the fabric by touching it, by pressing it, and by sliding the hand on the surface of the fabric in order to see if it is aesthetically pleasing to them or not. The importance of the fabric handle has encouraged the textile scientists into quantifying these tactile properties”.
