Digitone Sketch #14 Warts And All

I'm trying to get out of my comfort zone with this one. Instead of my usual downtempo trip hop, I tried doing something in a more fast paced electronica style. I was inspired by the soundtracks to Mirror's Edge and Deus Ex Human Revolution.
I still have trouble navigating the Digitone! A lot of the features I tweak during this performance are hidden behind second pages and toggles and modes, and it's hard to keep track of everything. I was very close to rerecording the whole track, but thought it might be interesting to see what it looks like when I have to "troubleshoot" why something isn't behaving as I expected in the middle of a performance. Also it saves me another 10 attempts to get the "perfect" take, hehe.
All audio is coming from the Digitone, with a preamp plugin (Phoenix) and multiband expander (Maximus) added in post. Everything was recorded in one take, no overdubs.
Thanks for listening!

Damn dude, a full track on just the digitone! Sounds better than 99% of electronic music out there currently! Getting major cyberpunk vibes from this one! Thank you very much, Robin! All the patterns are already set up to sound just fine without tweaking, but the "bad" part of my bad take is that I missed a ton of cues; mute the drums at *this* exact moment, reload the pattern right *there*, tweak the filter cutoff then switch to the syn1 page to lower the ratios, etc. In hindsight I'm happy with how it turned out, but right after recording it all I could see were my missed cues :D

Hehe, thank you very much! The main reason I call them sketches is to keep things loose. I know if I try to polish my tracks after recording them, I'll end up spending a lot of time for nothing and then abandoning my tracks because of having too high self imposed standards. Putting on a "Sketch" at the end encourages me to finish my tracks and upload them despite having mistakes in them :)

@IvarTryti
@IvarTryti 4 года назад
Thanks for checking out my older stuff! I love the sound of bass guitar, but it takes a lot of time and effort to put into a track. I often have to rerecord the same bassline several times, which really drains me of energy I otherwise would have spent composing the song. Hooking up the bass guitar also makes the whole music making process more involved since I have to set up more gear. I'd like to include it more, but I'm gonna have to find a way to make it less tedious to record and edit :)

Great tune. Inspiring - just acquired a Digitone, inspired in large part from your videos. Do you have any methods for composing your tracks? Cheers!
@IvarTryti
@IvarTryti 3 года назад
Thank you! I only have a few small tricks that help me when composing. When I make music, it's like I have limited music-making stamina, and focusing on details is a huge drain on it. To make the most of my limited stamina, my main trick is to focus on making one full pattern as fast as possible, focusing on an interesting chord progression rather than on mixing. By "full" I mean that it has the drums, bass, chords, main melody, or any other thing you want your track to have. Once you have a rough little loop it's a lot easier to expand it by duplicating it and changing the notes and sounds on the duplicated pattern. Once I've run out of ideas, that's when I start mixing properly and polishing the sound.

This one is amazing! Maybe this is a dumb question, but how are you getting 32nd notes in the hats? On the Digitakt I would do this with retriggers but since the digitone does not have that feature I haven’t figured out how to add them in. Thanks!
@dirthawk
@dirthawk 4 года назад
scale per track perhaps
@IvarTryti
@IvarTryti 4 года назад
Thank you! Yep, it's like dirthak said; scale per track. Track 4 is playing at double speed. Another way to get 32nd notes is to save the hat sound to the sound pool, then enable arp and set its speed to 1/32, then saving *that* sound to the sound pool. Now you have a normal hat sound and a separate hat with arp enabled at 32nd note speed :)
