Here's another attempt at non-trip hop on the Digitone. It's refreshing to make tracks with the goal of making interesting timbres instead of focusing on making interesting chord progressions. You can do both of course, but both take a lot of time so I focused on the former. It's amazing how much you can squeeze out of the 4 synth tracks with some deliberate use of lock trigs, voice allocation and tons of reverb and delay! The Digitone's master overdrive is also really nice. It helped me pull the softer pads to the front and generally make everything sound a bit more aggressive.
All audio is coming from the Digitone, with a premp plugin (Phoenix) and multiband expander (Maximus) added in post. Everything was recorded in one take, no overdubs.
Thanks for listening!

Fantastic track! There is passion in death as the corpse comes out of the grave. The sadness in poetry will fuel his revenge.

@@donmurowski9421 Thank you very much, Don! I don't remember exactly how I made it, but pretty much all my drum sounds are based off of 1 good sounding drum patch, then tweaked to taste. my favorite way of making drums is to take a good sounding drum where the amp envelope and filter envelope and everything is already set, then pressing SYN1+YES to randomize those parameters. You'll get the same attack and decay and filtering, except the sound source is different. There's a lot of bad sounds to wade through, but you can sculpt many of these random sounds into great drums.

Another amazing composition! The closing was sweet!! I've been watching lots of videos on this box, and yours are some of the top ones. I'm slowly starting to grasp the controls (without having to think so hard where stuff is at) Thankfully there's a lot of carry-over from the DT workflow. Thanks for another stellar example of the DN capabilities :)
@IvarTryti
@IvarTryti 4 года назад
Thank you very much, Bob! It's good to hear the closing was fine, I was worried I dragged on for too long with the filtering thing. It surprised me that 95% of the muscle memory I'd built up on the Digitakt carried over to the Digitone. The last 5% works against me though, especially trying to select tracks by pressing MIDI+Track, hehe. Thanks again!

@intheblink
@intheblink 4 года назад
Sick as usual. You know, when I had my Digitakt. The whole process of sorting through and assigning samples was just so tedious to me... I never felt like I was getting into a creative flow even though I felt good about understanding how the machine worked. Watching your videos, though, really makes me wish I still had it so I could get some of my song ideas in there and just kind of “jam” on them. Really, though, I think I’ve finally been bitten by the Octatrack bug. I keep watching videos and think I know the basics of operating it now without having even touched one. Just seems like it could lead to a lot of inspiring places... and I love slicing samples.

@IvarTryti
@IvarTryti 4 года назад
@@intheblink Hehe, thank you very much man! I'm almost the opposite when it comes to the DT vs the OT. The DT is super light weight but has enough features to make full tracks on it, which I prefer working with over the OT which is no doubt more feature packed but slower to work with.
@LukezyM
@LukezyM 4 года назад
If you found it hard to move into creative flow on the Digitakt, then I imagine the Octatrack will be one level higher in that perspective, with it’s cryptic and convoluted nature. But it does reward you for your patience.
@Jamslerr
@Jamslerr 4 года назад
The digitakt definitely holds your hand while playing and creating. The octatrack stays at home and tells you to go play outside by yourself. If you didn't vibe with the digitakt, not sure the octatrack would be a reasonable purchase.

Excellent as always! BTW, how many tracks are you using for drums/percussion?
@IvarTryti
@IvarTryti 4 года назад
Thank you! I'm using track 4 for all drum sounds. The kicks and snares are pretty straight forward; sound lock certain trigs to kicks and snares. The hihats are done by turning on arp mode at 16th note speed, then placing a trig that plays for 16 steps early in the pattern. This lets me play a lot of hihats using only 1 trig. Then there's the ride which is placed on 2, 6, 10 and 14 then microtimed all the way to the left so they overlap with the previous trig (then they play on every downbeat). I also made sure each drum sound plays a different note so they don't accidentally steal each other's voices.
@lordgeronimo72
@lordgeronimo72 4 года назад
That is brilliant. Pardon me if I steal that arp mode “trick”. Thanks for the quick response!

I'm using my phone to record the video and button press sounds. The Digitone is recorded into FL Studio, and then I sync up the audio and video together in DaVinci Resolve, which is a free video editing software. My camera stand is basically a cardboard box or two, a hammer, a stick, some rubber bands and my phone. I set it up like this: imgur.com/a/aHkD3Xv
