[ Experiment 7.09] Dilatancy
Dry sand is moistened until almost saturated with water while maintaining a certain degree of cohesion, enabling the formation of a small column. Air bubbles and then excess water appear on the surface of the sand. Vibrations cause the grains to reorganize themselves into a compact stack by driving out the air. Without air between the moistened grains, sand loses its cohesion.
When the spread-out sand is manipulated, it appears to dry. The compact stack previously obtained through vibration is unstructured and once again there is room for air. The sand’s cohesion returns.
