To kick off valentine’s month on ‘Has It Aged Well?’ we’re covering perhaps the most iconic Indian romance of all time - Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Joining Abbas and Urjita for the episode is stand up comedian Prashasti Singh. Topics discussed include: The panelist’s first memories of DDLJ, seeing an Indian love story play out in Europe for the first time, the push and pull of the progressive and regressive aspects, why we saw ourselves in Raj and Simran, who was the better dad - Bauji or Pops? What was Kuljeet’s deal? Some interesting trivia and much more.

I've always been averse to thr movie, only for 1 reason. Simran's mother asks them to elope. Simran agrees to it. But who's word is to be taken? The patriarch. Even the love of simrans life wants to get an ok from thr father. Mother's word counts for nothing. And that one details irks me to no end. Love the episode though. Keep up the amazing conversations and fantastic guests

Just to sort of be the devil's advocate, maybe the point was getting everyones approval and since the mother was fine to begin with, it became all about the father. Havent watched the movie in a while. But maybee

I've been a regular viewer of your show since the beginning. It's a really entertaining program with two incredible hosts and insightful guests. However, I am a bit perplexed how a discussion on DDLJ could miss the most important part which makes the movie what it is- the music by Jatin Lalit. One reason why the 90's movies like DDLJ, superstars like SRK and Yashraj/Dharma remain so prominent in our memory is because the melodious music has become a part of our nostalgia. Most of the 90's movies have nothing much to offer in terms of the craft of filmmaking or longevity if one takes out the element of music. From the perspective of "has it aged well" too, one can discuss whether the film music of 90's, really stands the test of time or it's just our escape route to relish childhood/teenage memories.

Hi Subhrangshu, thank you for the feedback. I agree that in certain films there is so much to cover that sometimes key aspects, like in this case the music escape our radar. Will try to be more thorough henceforth. I'm glad you find the show entertaining.

I 100% agree with you. Jatin Lalit were the primary reason movies like DDLJ, JJWS, Khiladi etc got big flips at the box office. 100% agree that the musical due havent got the due they deserve

Just found this podcast yesterday and ended up watching it back to back the whole weekend. Felt like I found my people. Loved the guests and the hosts point of views across all the videos. ❤ DDLJ shaped my idea of how falling in love would be like which was soo wrong. But I still love the movie. Please do a video on Jaane bhi do yaaro. I tried showing it to my much younger sister recently and realized that many parts of it were pretty cringe. I used to enjoy it so much when I was a kid. 😂

I think Shah Rukh's character even now has aged very well. He's acting too flirtatious with kajol's char in the beginning but its the way shah rukh plays it. Its from a female gaze. There's no ill motive behind it. Maybe if some other actor had played it, it wouldn't have aged well. Another thing that makes DDLJ timeless is Kajol. Kajol's spunky personality comes through even though the character is supposed to be this good behaving girl who blushes and all. Kajol's presense and personality matches Raj's charcater right in the middle. If it was some other actress with not the personality of kajol I think this movie wouldn't have aged well. The hero would've become too overpowering for it to be seen as healthy romance. But because of Kajol it stands the test of time.

SRK did play a far from perfect character in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. Very endearing character.

Indians abroad are more conservative...i was brought up similarly, our parents held on to the culture so we wouldn't forget who we are...so kajol and her sis are realistic to me in ddlj

mereko Prashasti ekdum mast lagti hai.. Aur bhai sab ladkiyon pe pressure mat daalo yaar to have lofty aspirations. A few women have told me about the current trend of wanting a woman to be always charging for everything. Sometimes a lot of people understand life and know paison aur position se jyada khushi kai aur cheezon mein hoti hai

I think DDLJ became legendary because this movie made people believe that you can fall in love with a someone and marry them after convincing and winning over everyone's heart.

Suggestion for next movie: CHACHI 420!! CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED MOVIE in terms of pop culture. Each and every actor has KILLED IT in their roles and it's a shame that even though the movie has several top notch comedic and meme worthy moments, it still doesn't get the attention it deserves!! Do consider it, pretty please? ❤️

Can we all just agree that _DDLJ_ sucks? We can’t? You mean, it’s just me all by my hater lonesome out here? OK. 🤷🏽‍♂️ (Also, it makes NO SENSE that Raj, Simran, and her sister would have Indian accents, when all three characters were supposedly born, or at least raised in the UK. I was born and raised in the U.S.; I don’t sound like I’m from Hyderabad.)
