A lot of followers ask me the difference between the HS3 and Fury pickups. Watch my own opinion in this video, and tell me what you think in the comments ! :)
Both Malmsteen Strats are USA with the exact same woods, only the pickups differ. I used a Jimi Hendrix mexican Strat to avoid this kind of sentence : "Hey, all the single coils sound the same with your Fractal Axe FX2 !!" No no no no no bro, listen to this Hendrix Strat, we can hear a difference !

I honestly kind of like the HS3 a tad more. It sounds a lot more Yngwie-ish, specifically old school Yngwie Malmsteen. I really like his old school tone because it still sounds really metal while still retaining that straty vibe.

@@bluwng No, Yngwie used a DiMarzio FS-1 in the early days, then started to use the HS-1, HS-2 then HS-3 sets about the time he landed in Los Angeles in 1983. DiMarzio went to him and offered an endorsement. The FS-1 is a good pickup but can be very noisy because it's not hum canceling.

I wish I could hear the difference clearly on these tiny computer speakers.. not the greatest way to learn about tones..but I guarantee if I go to a music store and ask to try Strats with all these different pickups, they will not have them there! That is why I started trying to research like this.. sad, I know..music stores should have more variety of stuff in the stores..

I would say the SDs sounds closer to the fender pickup, in other words more vintage voiced than the dimarzio does, but only every so slightly. IIRC the dimarzio is a stacked design and the SD is closer to a vintage strat pickup design but for your play style i think it's hard to hear any tangible difference.
@gkol69

+BETAsin SD is a stacked design, too, but I agree that DMZs go towards modern and SDs towards vintage, but slighty so.

NeoGeofanatic To me sounds like The Fury pickups have more highs which kinda make it sound better in the mix but a little more shrill so not quite as clean sounding as the HS3. But it could all be in picking dynamics honestly. the difference I hear is so very small though
@londoncharlieboy

HS3 are hands down winner for me. They sound exactly like vintage Yngwie (if that’s what your looking for). The Fury’s sound dreadful to me.......I ripped em out of my YJM Strat & put DiMarzios in. Big improvement in tone.
@adamcogan211
@adamcogan211 7 лет назад
I was listening to a podcast with Paul Gilbert and he said the reason Yngwie moved from the HS-3's is because he was having issues with volume since they are very quiet pickups. (I know ironic that the guy with the loudest amps would say his pickups were quiet) anyway dimarzio decided to design pickups which solved the volume issue but yngwie moved to seymour duncan and he created the fury pickups. Thus paul gilbert was given the injector pickups which are essentially the modified HS-3's. So if you want that classic Yngwie tone with no problems in volume, the injector's are the way to go:)
@primeDecomposition
@primeDecomposition 7 лет назад
I put an injector pup in the bridge position of my CS '63 strat. Actually I don't think they're meant at all to be like a normal vintage strat pup minus the hum like the HS-2/HS-3's were, it's a good deal hotter than a normal vintage strat bridge pup, a fairly good deal hotter. Like the pup it replaced probably measured around 5.85-6K output. The injector's up around 11K-12K so... yeah. Hot enough that I lost most of the quack in the bridge-middle position lol. Overall, the Injector (bridge pup) sounds like a really muscular single coil, but definitely still single coil in character, still not in humbucker territory, you won't be doing any djenting with 'em lol.
@randomguitarhero7095
@randomguitarhero7095 7 лет назад
Adam Cogan the "quiet" pups refers to the low output of the hs3s ..quiet because it kinda dampens he overtones from his playing especially during those alternately picked licks... that what he is referring to as quiet.. not the volume
@tonybowen455
@tonybowen455 7 лет назад
Interesting. I love the injector pickups. Yngwie licks are actually the most played thing on my fireman so far. I feel like they remind me of a mix between a paf humbucker and single coil, though. I'll have to get a set of fury pickups to figure out if they're the similar.

All im saying is that people say you cant hear the diference between dimarzio and seymore duncan? Of corse you can?? I have seymore duncans in the guitar i made; and personally i dont like them. Thyr too clinical sounding. Dimarzio has a woody sound that really brings out the sound of wood. Dimarzio company are incredibly helpfull when choosing pickups. They asked me what kind of wood i was building my next guitar out of; and they matched the pickup power and sound to bring out the sound and resonance of the wood. Its well known that malmsteen is a bit of a asshole to work with. Just watch him on stage. While other band members are working together; hes off to the side doing his own thing; posing and trying to look cool. Satriani and vai and petrucci are just humble guys that work together. Holy Cow!!! That is some incredible guitar playing!!! I like the HS-3 tone better. It just seems to have a little extra fullness. I have a 93 maple neck Yngwie and an 89 rosewood Yngwie. Both came with HS3 but sounded completely different from each other. I changed the 93 bridge recently to an HS4. The HS4 sounds better than the HS3 for everything I'm playing. It has added clarity. Thank you for posting this video. It's really helpful and amazing playing!

I can hear the difference, especially when you engage neck pickup. HS3 is more open, wider, organic and defined. The fury is unfortunately ( I have them) more dull. Your work is every time holiday of sound for us...cheers

After hearing his interview on how he wound up leaving dimarzio i really think there is more than meets the eye with the real story. Yngwie said he was not happy with the dimarzio's? You are not happy with something BUT use it anyway for over 25 years??? WTF? i am supposed to believe that! really yngwie that reason is BS!) He could have had ANY pu maker wind him custom pu's at anytime so why did he wait? I really think he had a falling out with Dimarzio over something that was business related and not that he was not happy with the dimarzio pu's as he claims! he story just does not add up in the real world. Like i said he "Could have" had ANY pickup winder(duncan, fralin,lollar,and the hundreds more!) make him custom pu's at any time!

I can tell the difference. The HS3 sound more strat like but fuller than classic single coils... The Fury's (which I also own) have a bit sharper midrange tone and are hotter. The best way to compare these pickup sets is to play them through a tube amp set to the same volume and eq settings. These pickups are hard to distinguish on solid-state or "amp modeling" setups. Plus with the HS3s you can get a volume pedal or the Radial Tone bone pedal and slam the front end of the amp and get a beautiful tone. Look, it worked for Yngwie for all those albums from Steeler to Alcatrazz and throughout most of his other albums... SD offered him a better endorsement deal. $$$ They are hotter but to me sound thinner and have more upper midrange. not bad. Its why I own both...

First off, your playing is exceptional, I have a feeling that this experiment proved more about how much isi in the hands and the soul than the pick-ups. Personally, i felt that when you swapped to the seyour duncans there was more warmth in the bridge pick up, but it might have been a sutbler change in where you were picking. Furthermore, I think if i was going to go for another signature strat, listening to your rendition of Highway Star would remind me that the middle pick-up doesn't really get much use and that guitar just sounded so good, I'd buy the Blackmore, but again, your demo was smoking and in my hands maybe not quite so beneficial haha.

I thought the Dimarzios retained more of the traditional strat sparkle. The Duncans had s stronger mid presence. By the way that stock 65 strat sounded great too! By this sound sample I prefer the HS3. I suspect the cleans are going to more of my pleasing.

Hi, I've tried both HS & Fury in both maple & rosewood necks. Well....There is a difference but you can't hear it well if you're using to many processors such as multi-fx stomp boxes etc. If you play it straight on a typical A/B tube amp you'll notice that HS pickups have a more "organic" and aggressive sound, they also react better with picking dynamics. From the other hand, Fury pickups are a bit cleaner and i could say more "polished", specially in the highs and their bass has less attack (not that "boomy" as HS). The conclusion is that if you're using multi-fx, stomp boxes, 2-3 ODs etc, just buy any of'em, but if you're a straight to the amp kinda player HS will give you more articulate sound (they are more sensitive in the harmonics), specially with fast picking and left hand "light but fast" playing. You play with a very nice feeling by the way!!!

Yes I hear more / better mids for the HS3 consistency in these comparison vids

I agree, no discernable difference with the SD Fury or the DiMarzio HS-3's. If you hadn't changed guitars I would have never known. Now, that Hendrix Strat! Wow! Great tone on that beast. Plus- it has real single coil pickups- much more high end and open sounding- both the DiMarzio and SD are stacked hum buckers. I own all of them too and like the single coils in the Hendrix Strat way more then either my DiMarzio's or SD Fury's. Both are warm sounding but lack the big throaty open single could vibe that only a real single coil pickup can deliver. Those Mexican built Hendrix Strats are amazing guitars! It's in my top 5 favorite guitars that I own!

Yngwie said that Seymour Duncan made over 30 prototypes for him before they got it "right", Supposedly each PUP is unique to it's location in the guitar. I have read that the Fury PUP's have some kind of noise cancelling technology in their base plate. I have a full set with matching electronics in a 1994 ST57-YM Yngwie Stratocaster and it's like a hush was/is built right into the pickup. Freakin crazy!

Both sound very, very close to me, but I thought the DiMarzio neck pickup sounded cleaner. The real single-coils had more growl than either... 😉

The Fury has a very organic tone. While the HS3 sounds kind of fuzzy & over compressed. I'm definitely digging the Duncan!

I’m wondering if playing clean or at the onset of break-up could better reveal differences. It should definitely show the difference in output. I also think it would be helpful to then adjust the gain so they break-up at the same time to demonstrate tonal differences. I suggested this latter point elsewhere and was shot down. Nonetheless I think it would be helpful. I’m on the fence as to what to buy for my HSS. DiMarzio specs indicate that the HS-3 has a considerable amount of bass which could go a long way in matching up with a humbucker in the bridge, despite the large difference in output level, especially if the single coils are used to clean up. You can always use an overdrive or high gain channel on your amp to get them to saturate.

I care only to think you've got TWO Yngwie Strat and ONE Hendrix's signature. While an MIJ is all I got at home. LOL. Great playing by the way, I enjoy the pick attack dynamic with Fury better, and the Hendrix one. HS3 is too warm and punchy. It's like playing (a bit) a humbucker.

Great playing as always brother!! Awesome video. This is one of ( if not) THE BEST comparison videos between these two pickups. I have a"Duck"project guitar I'm working on and decided in the beginning to use the HS3s.. and watching/listening to your video just reassures me that I picked the right pickups for it. Inner isn't better than the other just different. The HS3s just have more of that early YJM vibe. Great job!!

NeoGeofanatic yeah.. I actually am building from scratch. I have a Warmoth body and neck and all the other parts( including stickers). aiming for a"period correct Duck" from the Trilogy era. Even have the leopard print strap.

I have a '74 Fender Strat, an '82 57 reissue Fender Strat and a '92 Fender American Standard Strat each equipped with DiMarzio HS3 pickups. Yet each guitar has it's own individual tone. I had actually considered trying the Duncans to compare. But after this video I can tell that the difference between the brands are too little too purchase another set. Thanks. Great playing. The thing I got out of this the most is that the output volume from both brands are identical. That (output) was my deciding factor in the first place for getting the YJM set. I find them to be super versatile for most playing situations. They are equally at home playing in the country band or in the blues band or even my classic rock band. And obviously shred too. lol. By the way. My '57 reissue sounds just like Vintage 65 that you demonstrated. Showing that body and neck construction play a huge part in overall tone. Again, great demonstration. Thanks.

i have to offer up my opinion, the seymours seem a little less muddy in the bridge mostly but overall they seemed that way too! the dimarzios sound great, but when you picked up the duck with the duncans, thats where the sound came more alive, like a blanket had been removed! again thats just my opinion but them fender pups sounded freggin fantastic! thanks for doing this video! awesome playing!

First up, superb playing, outstanding! For me the HS-3 has that Malmsteen 80s clarity that the SD don't, particularly on the bridge pick up. The SD are more late 90s Malmsteen sound. I hear a slight difference on the bridge every time. The HS3 bridge is Trilogy through and through. SD are great but it's the later sounding Malmsteen to my ears. I prefer that 80s HS3 sound.
