Dear Ceci, I love this performance too!!! Drunken Concubine in dialogue the tragic story between a famous concubine of the Chines imperial court, Li Yugang in that role, and the emperor, Dimash´s rol that´s why the throne at stage. At the end of the story the concubine is poisoned as a result of court intrigues. Li Yugang is a famous artist considered China´s National Treasure and he is a nan dan singer (male playing female roles) art forms from Peking Opera, giving the traditional art a modern edge. The way he moves (knees bent together and those "meows" have a special meaning in the traditional opera). What is most amazing about Li is that he could´nt study in the university or conservatory of music, he is absolutely autodidact which is so admirable!! 👌👍💥

El jingju (京剧), que es como se dice ópera de Pekín en chino, es un género de xiqu (戏曲), que es una forma de arte escénica que integra el canto, la recitación, la actuación teatral y las artes marciales. se inició a mediados del siglo XIX y que se hizo extremadamente popular entre la corte de la dinastía Qing. Absolutely love this performance! 'Drunken Concubine' tells the story of the Emperor (Dimash) and the concubine (Li Yugang). The Emperor is sentencing the concubine to death (I think for treason), this is when he does the vocal fry, and she reminds him of the wonderful time they had together when they were drunk. The Emperor says that he wishes that they could have 1 more time getting drunk together. Li Yugang is famous in the Peking Opera for playing women's roles (Chinese tradition). Thank you Ceci for this great reaction and analysis! Really enjoyed this. (also, did you note the thick soles on Li Yugang's feet? Dimash is so much taller that they felt that he needed a bit of height so that they would look more balanced while singing. Also, Li Yugang is in his 40's although he looks much younger)

This duet is so unusual for Dimash. I would love to see a behind-the-scenes video of when Dimash and Li Yugang first met and started arranging their vocals together. They must have had so much fun learning how they could blend their sounds! Beautiful performance from both of them.

He sings the part of the emperor while Li sings the part of the concubine. Here's some background that you requested. Li was professionally trained to develop his singing and acting in nan dan (a male playing the female role in Peking Opera). He was given the title of China's First Class Artist (National Treasure). In the 2nd half of the duet, Li's singing style imitates the high registers of the Erhu (Chinese 2-stringed instrument). Dimash also does an Erhu imitation towards the end of the song.
