I grew up with him as my favorite player at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, so I watched his development very closely. Yes, he was never really the fastest and often was criticized for his listless game. But overall he was a very complete player. His "first touch" was really world class. He was practically always accessible, because he could make use of every conceivable pass.
