If your leds stays dimly lit with the car off, add 1k ohm 1/2w resistor in parallel to the socket and it will fix this problem.
Add 1 resistor per each light socket that is causing this problem.
You can pick up a packet of 5 at your local Radio Shack store for $1.19.
Part Model: 271-1118.

Dude you helped me fix a totally different LED light with the concept of your video. I have a new LED grow light for plants, which requires absolute darkness for certain periods of time. I noticed that the LED lights were staying very dimly lit when the timer shut off, but turned off totally when unplugged. So you said to add resistance to the circuit from the power. So all i had to do was add an additional 3 prong tip onto the factory 3 prong tip. I basically doubled up the male plug end that plugs into the timer outlet, and BINGO! The additional plug end created just enough resistance to turn the dimly lit LEDs off. No other video, even dedicated to fixing grow lights had explained that concept soo simply, thank you.

Man my new LED 578 bulbs were driving me crazy staying just barely on. Then i found your vid, went to radio shack, installed 1 resistor at the top center dome light on my 04 dodge ram and it corrected the dome plus the two forward map lights all from the one resistor. Thank you so much for sharing! Perfect fix and fun lil project.

Thank you so much for the video! I recently installed LED dome lights into my '07 Chevy Colorado.. and at first the lights would always go out immediately.. but then I installed more LEDS for underneath the dash and then the dome light started to stay dim.. glad to have found a solution thanks to you!

Used the 1000 ohm 1/2W resistor and it worked on my 2003 Silverado. Soldered it on to the bulb so I could still replace the LED and just install an incandescent bulb if I wanted to. Thanks for the vid!

The 1 k ohm 1/2 watt resistor worked perfectly for the reverse lights on my 2018 Buick Regal TourX. I soldered the resistor directly to one of the two 921 style LED bulb in a way where I was still able to insert the bulb in the socket and it worked perfectly. Thanks for sharing your story.

@josh33025
@josh33025 2 года назад
@@newfie-dean5803 yeah I just put the resistor in with the bulb when I install them in the socket. You need to bend them so that one end goes to the positive and the other goes to the negative side. Just be sure the positive side won't touch ground, trim them shorter if need be.
@newfie-dean5803
@newfie-dean5803 2 года назад
@@josh33025ok, so the resistor itself hangs outside the socket? Dues it get hot? I think only a 100 ohm is needed and won’t get as hot. I used LEDs for years with no problems in a 2006 mustang GT. However the map lights and license plate light would flicker after a while so I changed them a few times. Also sometimes part of my tachometer lights would go out on the instrument cluster. I’m pretty sure this is all related to the lights and the BCM that controls it all. This summer I purchased some expensive VLEDS V6 extremes for the tail lights that are high quality: I also changed the license plate bulb and the map lights to VLEDS. Since then the tachometer light usually lights up always but what happens now is after driving the car for an hour or so it turns off the license plate bulb and two of the rear park lights, one on each side, the lights closest to the trunk badge. I tried other bulb brands like Sylvania and Diode Dynamics with the same issue remaining. When the lights go off if I flick the switch on and off everything works again. I have been told a 100 ohm resistor should fix this: I think if I bought CANBUS bulbs for the license plate and the map lights it might fix all the issues including the tachometer light issue.

You should be able too. The reason he is having this problem is because this car uses a Canbus system and the Led's are not providing enough resistance to tell the canbus system to turn the lights off. More and more cars are going to the canbus system because is saves on wiring.

I have installed drl unit led strips with turn signal. It has 3 wires. Red, black & yellow. Red & black are connected to drl unit and works perfectly fine. If i connect the yellow cable to its individual turn signal, once the drl unit switches OFF the leds are dimly lit, lets say about 50% of each led strips are ON. If i remove the yellow cable than there's no issue. How do i resolve this?? I timed and it seemed it was ON even after a minute.

Maciej Skurznica 14.4 Volts / 1000 Ohms = 0.0144 Amps (or 14.4 mA). 14.4 mA * 14.4 Volts = 0.207 Watts, or about a fifth of a Watt... so a quarter Watt resistor should suffice.

@DIYCarModz

What bulbs do you have? link?
@TheUtuber999
@TheUtuber999 6 лет назад
Clinton Hemphill It's not that they're not getting enough power, it's that they're getting power when they shouldn't be... it's just not visible with an incandescent bulb because the current going through the filament isn't high enough to heat the wire to the point where it starts to glow, but LEDs are more efficient, and therefore glow more readily.

I have a 2005 dodge ram 1500 and I put leds they only turn on when I open the door but they won't turn on when I click it to turn on do you know why? Could it be the fuse that it is too small or the leds?
@DIYCarModz
@DIYCarModz 6 лет назад
I would check the switch and also the interior light fuse to makes sure that is not blown. If all your interior lights do not work then the fuse is blown. If only the dome or map light doesn't work then check with the regular bulb to make sure the switch is functional.
@Dr_PeeWee
@Dr_PeeWee 6 лет назад
Junior Martinez I just put some in my dodge ram 1500 and I found out these LED lights are Polar, meaning one side is positive and the other negative. Switch the lights around in the sockets and they should work fine. 😁 I had the same problem. I was a bit freaked out that my lights remain on but tbh its kind of nice that they do because then at night you have some dim light and dont have to blind yourself with the full brightness of you drop something or if you need to grab something from the seat. So I dont mind them being on really they aren't as bright as the instrument cluster so the little bit of light coming from the LEDs is beneficial enough I will leave them how they are

Problem is most LED's are not designed to dim out. I found this out with my Mazda 626. The interior lights dim out just like these and after a couple months they started flickering and eventually quit working. This shouldn't be a problem with lights that simply turn on and off with no fade.

Right, it generates heat. I just had mine in for about 30secs and I could see a little "vapor" (cold outside, so you could "see the heat"). What is the safest, largest resistor I can put in to not have my dome light set my cloth roof on fire? What would be the color bands on it?
@Dr_PeeWee
@Dr_PeeWee 6 лет назад
All resistors will generate heat, that is how they perform their job. If you don't want a ton of heat and have the space for it, install a 1 W rated resistor rated for the same resistance 1000 ohms(the colored bands on a resistor are a way of showing their resistance value). 1 W resistors are much larger, however they will emanate less heat due to the size of the resistor as its built to handle more power. Also the higher your resistance value becomes, the more heat the unit will produce under that same load. so if you can get away with a 100 ohm resistor over a 1000 ohm resistor, them you should be able to produce less heat with the same effect. look up ElectroBoom, he is very good at describing this, and is also very humorous. hope this helped, 8 months to late.

I don't see a problem with this. It can't be drawing any significant current. I'll bet that the clock draws much more current to keep the time and it's always on plus the circuits that allow your key fob to work that are also on all of the time.
@richardnavratil9661
@richardnavratil9661 6 лет назад
Actually, it drains your battery. Believe it or not, it had just happened to me. My car had issues starting, I had the whole system checked - battery good, starter fine and alternator charging it. Then I realized that when I have the dome light switch to "door" mode, it never goes truly out, stays lit (very dim, mind you). You'd think that doesn't do much damage, but imagine this over night for 12 straight hours when the temps dip to 0F or even below. My car hasn't started a few times. When I took the bulb out/turned it off, it's been fine since.
@TheUtuber999
@TheUtuber999 6 лет назад
Richard Navrátil Not true. After the timeout period (usually 10-30 seconds), the dome light circuit will be faded or switched off. A regular incandescent bulb would be about 2-6 Ohms, so a 1000 Ohm resistor would have far less current drain.
@Dr_PeeWee
@Dr_PeeWee 6 лет назад
Richard Navrátil also most Vehicles still allow a little bit of current through the lighting system anyway. Kind of like a trickle I guess you could say, with an incandescent bulb it's not enough power to keep them lit, more or less it helps keep the filament somewhat warm so that way if it's winter time and you open your door it doesn't take forever to heat up and light up to its fullest brightness. However with LEDs the current is just enough to keep them dimly-lit. And LEDs have basically no warm-up time
